Excerpt: ...in the winter mornings, out of the skirts of her shift--whether that shift was made of " creeshie flannen," or of what, we cannot tell; but it seems to have been the reverse of " Nannie's cutty-sark" in " Tarn o' Shanter." A pretty sight we are sure, it would he to have seen Kirstan going clotching through among the horses, holding up her " sark-tail," filled with the naig's corn! ay holding it up till the lads toomed the caup into it! We have several rhymes about this part of her conduct, but they are mostly of such an indecent nature that they are not fit to appear in print--we select the following as being the most decent, although we have had to alter several words and phrases to adapt it to moder n tastes. "clarty Kirstan, what a shame, To show the naigs your dirty wamet Cadgin' up, and cadgin' down, Your sherny legs wad staw the town; Ilka Uric wV muck is fou, IWaur than the auld broddy sow, That wallows in the midden hole! Your clarty fashions wha can thole--Coup your corn, and pay your kain, P and gang to bed again!" Sometimes, she requested the ploughmen, when they came in to an early breakfast, to hand her in a certain utensil to bed: but one of them being somewhat of a wag, and detesting withal such a piece of service, determined to play her a trick; so, the next time he was asked to do this, he handed her in the milkstrainer, milsey, or seiler. The result may be anticipated. No sooner had she begun to shed her roses, than the good honest baillie slumbering at her side was bedewed with a shower which was not impregnated with the fragrance and freshness of the dawn!--and he called out vehemently " Baud within Kirstan I haud within!" Her milk, butter, cheese, &c., ...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scottish folk literature is characterised by a wide range of creative expression: story, song, play and proverb. This anthology, first published in 1984, provides an authoritative introduction to Scottish folk literature, and is unique in that it deals with all the genres intrinsic to Scottish tradition. Its selected texts offer an unusual and diverse enjoyment to the reader, including such forms as wonder tales or Märhcen, classical ballads, riddles, jocular tales, lyric and comic and occupational folksongs, rhymes, historical and supernatural legends, and guisers’ plays. The texts chosen cover the main regional traditions of Lowland Scotland, from Galloway to the Shetlands, and span a number of centuries, through both pre- and post-industrial periods, from a sailor’s worksong of the sixteenth century to modern urban legends just recently recorded. The book is arranged in four sections, on Folk Narrative, Folksong, Folksay, and Folk Drama, each with an introduction and a bibliographical essay setting the material in context and indicating some of its international links. Folk literature itself is brought into firm focus by discussion and generic example, and the anthology as a whole illuminates substantial areas of Scottish social and cultural life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Late Victorian Folksong Revival: The Persistence of English Melody, 1878-1903, E. David Gregory provides a reliable and comprehensive history of the birth and early development of the first English folksong revival. Continuing where Victorian Songhunters, his first book, left off, Gregory systematically explores what the Late Victorian folksong collectors discovered in the field and what they published for posterity, identifying differences between the songs noted from oral tradition and those published in print. In doing so, he determines the extent to which the collectors distorted what they found when publishing the results of their research in an era when some folksong texts were deemed unsuitable for "polite ears." The book provides a reliable overall survey of the birth of a movement, tracing the genesis and development of the first English folksong revival. It discusses the work of more than a dozen song-collectors, focusing in particular on three key figures: the pioneer folklorist in the English west country, Reverend Sabine Baring-Gould; Frank Kidson, who greatly increased the known corpus of Yorkshire song; and Lucy Broadwood, who collected mainly in the counties of Sussex and Surrey, and with Kidson and others, was instrumental in founding the Folk Song Society in the late 1890s. The book includes copious examples of the song tunes and texts collected, including transcriptions of nearly 300 traditional ballads, broadside ballads, folk lyrics, occupational songs, carols, shanties, and "national songs," demonstrating the abundance and high quality of the songs recovered by these early collectors.

It is the result of a lifetime of work on dialect and metaphor and gives an overview of the folk wisdom expressed in figurative expressions. The author draws on his extensive contact with the rural cultures of Dorset, Cornwall, Yorkshire and Lancashire, but has also included a range of sayings from North America, Australia, Scotland and other English speaking countries. With revised contents and an improved index to make individual entries easier to find, the Concise can be used to check the meaning and the origin of an expression or to avoid mixed metaphors, anachronisms and incongruities. It is a joy to browse long after your original query has been answered.
