For over 400 years, Black African men, women and children suffered the worst type of enslavement and humiliation from the hands of Catholics and other Western Christians during the transatlantic slave trade. Before now, no one could ever believe that the Popes of the Church were deeply involved in this Holocaust against Black African people. Despite the claims made by the hallowed papal office in Rome in recent years that the Popes condemned the enslavement of peoples wherever it existed including that of Black Africans, recent researches in these fields of study have proved the contrary to be true. The Church and her Popes were rather among the major “role players” in this worst crime against Black Africans in recorded history. With the help of a considerable number of papal Bulls from the Vatican Secret Archives and a great amount of Royal documents from the Portuguese National Archives in Lisbon, the present book is aiming to undertake a critical and analytical inquiry of this aspect of the transatlantic slavery that has been kept in the dark for so many years by the Western historians and scholars. The results of this studious but fruitful academic inquiry are laid bare in this notable work of the 21st century. Pius Onyemechi Adiele is a Catholic priest of Ahiara Diocese Mbaise and an alumnus of Seat of Wisdom Seminary Owerri and Bigard Memorial Seminary Enugu in Nigeria. He obtained his licentiate in Theology from the famous University of Münster and his doctoral degree in Church History from the renowned University of Tübingen in Germany. At present, he is a research fellow in the areas of African Church History and Enslavement of peoples as well as the pastor in charge of the merged parishes of Lauchheim, Westhausen, Lippach, Röttingen and Hülen in Germany.

Book excerpt: Through fieldwork research, this book seeks to explore Catholic ecumenism and the proliferation of Pentecostalism. Using data gathered from four West African countries, it additionally endeavors to investigate the sociopolitical impact of Pentecostalism, which is growing exponentially and is seen by many as the new face and phase of Christianity on the continent. This book puts a search light on the reality of West African Pentecostalism and its relationship with the older Christian traditions. It cogently asks if Pentecostalism is a cog in the wheels of the fragile ecumenical work among West African Christianity and wonders about its impact on the poor existing social, economic, and political situations common to most West African politics and governments. This book is for professionals and students of religion and theology, and is useful for the casual reader.

Book excerpt: The book masterfully knits together the various curves and routes traveled so far by the Catholic Church in Africa. From an African perspective, the book presents a general trajectory of Catholicism on the continent by highlighting some significant events and moments in the evolution of the Catholic Church in Africa. It equally profiles the Vatican’s policy of indigenization as realized on the continent through the Africanization of the local episcopate. That policy prepared the way for the emergence of the local churches in Africa on the heels of the post-missionary phase that terminated with the convocation of the First African Synod of Bishops in 1994. Beyond the vicissitudes of the relatively recent past, the book boldly indicates the likely future shape and direction of African Catholicism. It contends that the future shape of the church in Africa may not be determined by a belabored inculturation, but instead by how the local churches concern themselves with concrete realities such as poverty, lack of opportunities, and ecological issues. It envisages a church that may not shy away from asserting itself within the mainstream ecclesiastical politics of global Catholicism where it must “connect, compete and collaborate.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Was there a Black Pope and Papal kingdom in Africa? It was a question the King of Portugal asked in 1486. Could that have been what sparked the age of exploration, perhaps codenamed: To discover the Source of the Niger? Queen Ogo of Asaba on the River Niger, tells her story, and opens up a world hidden in plain sight. Harken back to a time of widespread injustice, of colonial wars and bitter rivalries, and an age where the best of men arose from the shadows. 1777. New York. Harry Washington once attended the man who would become the first President of the United States. Now a sergeant in the British Colonial Army, he is a confidante of US General George whose surname he bears. Unbeknown to most, are memories of the days he walked the grounds of an exotic land and was known by the name, Hanye. Born in the heart of Africa, Hanye's tale is one of sorrow and inspiration. Captured during a war of dominance, he is sold into slavery and shipped to the American colony. While his name would echo into history, it is the legacy of his people that tells his full story. Queen Ogo of Asaba grew up listening to tales of the great Hanye, her cousin. Her reflections of the past bring a startling revelation: The Papal Kingdom that the King of Portugal heard of in 1486, which sparked centuries of exploration in West Africa looking for The Source of the Niger, may have been hidden in plain sight. From King James I, creating his version of the Bible to pacify the Puritans, to their exit-through her eyes, the story of Hanye and the birth of America is laid bare. She details the customs of a people who share close similarities in religious structure to the Roman Catholic Church, complete with their own Pope; of a proud people beholden to the same truths as the American Founding Fathers; and of Hanye, whose work was done and whose soul was leading him home. Queen Ogo and the Other Pope is the richly detailed story of various intersections that would dominate modern history and how much Harry would do to return home. "Queen Ogo and the Arrow from the Black Pope by Ike Charles Okwuobi is very well written and researched. Ike uses a variety of perspectives to paint a picture of a culture that everyone should learn about. It illuminates the enormous effect of the African slave trade on the current functioning of the U.S. and the concept of American Exceptionalism. It reveals the history of the Ibo people and their enormous impact on American democracy and uses the stories of many to jump through history, from 1619 to the modern-day. Even recent events, such as the capitol riots of 2021, have struggled with issues and ideas that were established several hundred years ago. As a whole, Queen Ogo is extremely interesting, and I recommend it to others. A powerful piece of literature by Ike Charles Okwuobi that everyone needs to read." - The Lost Chapter Book Review "Ike Charles Okwuobi has crafted a masterpiece. His words will make the reader stop, think, and absorb what is occurring in his scenes. It will provide them an education in African American culture like no book has attempted to show. Queen Ogo and the Arrow from the Black Pope has the potential to be awarded the distinguished honor to become a recommended book on the Black History Month list. It is filled with a rich culture that allows the reader to discover a world of times past. I feel this book is about to take the literary world by storm!" - Suzie Housley, Midwest Book Review
