Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bells and Pomegranates: First Series So far as I know, this Tragedy is the first artistic consequence of what Voltaire termed "a terrible event without consequences;" and although it professes to be historical, I have taken more pains to arrive at the history than most readers would thank me for particularizing: since acquainted, as I will hope them to be, with the chief circumstances of Victor's remarkable European career - nor quite ignorant of the sad and surprising facts I am about to reproduce (a tolerable account of which is to be found, for instance, in Abbe Roman's Recit, or even the fifth of Lord Orrery's Letters from Italy) - I cannot expect them to be versed, nor desirous of becoming so, in all the detail of the memoirs, correspondence, and relations of the time. From these only may be obtained a knowledge of the fiery and audacious temper, unscrupulous selfishness, profound dissimulation, and singular fertility in resources, of Victor - the extreme and painful sensibility, prolonged immaturity of powers, earnest good purpose and vacillating will of Charles - the noble and right woman's manliness of his wife - and the ill-considered rascality and subsequent better-advised rectitude of D'Ormea. When I say, therefore, that I cannot but believe my statement (combining as it does what appears correct in Voltaire and plausible in Condorcet) more true to person and thing than any it has hitherto been my fortune to meet with, no doubt my word will be taken, and my evidence spared as readily. - R. He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. It is now safe for passengers to land, and ladies may walk about alone with impunity. All were glad to get Off the boat for a few hours, and most Of us spent a little money at the well-known Chinese shop, where the beautiful embroideries and eggshell china are a great temptation. On returning to the boat passengers showed their purchases, each requiring the other to guess what price had been paid. Some people coming East for the first time had been greatly imposed on by street - sellers, and had paid eight or ten shillings for bracelets of coloured stones, while others who knew the ropes had obtained the same for one shilling. The unwary ones felt greatly humbled on hear ing how they had wasted their money. In spite of a few blue-robed fellaheen in the streets, Port Said appeared to me more like an inferior French or Italian seaport than an Eastern town. The eve ning before he had envied her, or, rather, he had en vied the man who had joined her. He had seen her; the man he had not seen. Parker had passed her door just as she was entering it, preceded by a bell-boy bear ing a single suit-case. She had turned to close her door, flinging back, as she turned, the long automobile veil she was wearing, and he had seen her face dis tinctly, an imperfect oval, a brow too wide and low to complete the oval of check and Chin; dominant eyes the color of sea-water on a cold gray day and heavily fringed with black; straight determined brows; nose faintly piquant; a voluptuous mouth; dusky satin-so ft skin. It was a contradictory face and arresting, ice cold eyes, warm mouth, and pomegranate tinting. She was not tall, below the usual woman's height, slim and well formed - and young, certainly not over twenty two. F or a moment, before the door closed on her, her eyes had met his fully, and coldly, and Parker had ex perienced an instant interest. Was it possible that she was alone in this hotel overrun with officers, men of all descriptions and many nationalities, and, in addi tion to them, the civilians who were coming and going to Washington? Scarcely the place for a strikingly beautiful young girl. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
