It pays particular attention to the way in which regional and sub-regional dynamics are impacted by extra-regional relations, such with the EU, US, China and India. Because African regionalism is influenced not only by economic processes, peace and security are also analysed as important factors shaping both regional and sub-regional relations and dynamics.
Book Synopsis The Third Option for the South China Sea by : David Jay Green
Download or read book The Third Option for the South China Sea written by David Jay Green and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-16 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Palgrave Pivot uses a simple model from game theory to explain the behavior of countries disputing ownership of resources and of small islands in the South China Sea. It argues that the rapid transformation of the region's economy - the rise of Factory Asia – is not being acknowledged, leading countries to take chances beyond what a rational picture of costs and benefits would suggest. Regional economic cooperation may be a viable alternative to the present conflicts. However, the varied experience of regional initiatives in Southeast Asia provides a cautionary note that, while there is the potential for peaceful development of the South China Sea, there are significant challenges to structuring successful programs.
Book Synopsis The Political Economy of Regionalism in Southern Africa by : Margaret Carol Lee
Download or read book The Political Economy of Regionalism in Southern Africa written by Margaret Carol Lee and published by Juta and Company Ltd. This book was released on 2003 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the face of increasing economic globalization, the countries of southern Africa have made commitments to enhanced regional development and the integration of their economies. Margaret Lee examines the challenges to regionalism in southern Africa, providing a critical assessment of the prospects for successful implementation. Lee's detailed study of the processes driving (or inhibiting) regional integration is firmly grounded in the history of the Southern African Development Community (SADC). Her analysis of the evolution of the SADC regional economy, as well as its political, social, and economic contexts, is a major contribution to debates about the merits and pitfalls of regionalism and options for African integration.
Book Synopsis Regional Integration in the Global South by : Sebastian Krapohl
Download or read book Regional Integration in the Global South written by Sebastian Krapohl and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-23 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a theory of economic integration in developing regions, where the level of intraregional economic interdependence is low and the dependence on extra-regional economic relations is high. It argues that the success or failure of regional integration in the Global South is to a large degree dependent on the reaction of extra-regional actors in Europe, North America and Northeast Asia. In doing so, it demonstrates that longstanding European integration theories cannot be successfully applied to other world regions, where economic conditions are fundamentally different. By providing detailed empirical analyses that are systematic in their use of a common theoretical and methodological framework the authors fill a significant lacuna in our understanding of these issues. This edited volume will appeal to students and scholars of comparative regionalism, area studies and global governance.

It looks at the rationale for regional collective action and reviews the trend of economic integration with a focus on the implications of the global financial crisis. In addition to reviewing the key issues related to the development of regional institutions for integration, the book analyzes issues such as trade and finance and deals with the implications of regionalism in terms of the introduction of domestic reforms in Asian countries before discussing the possible formation of a region-wide economic community. The eight chapters of the book are based on respective papers initially prepared for the Asian Development Bank Institute Conference 2010.
Book Synopsis Beyond Regionalism? by : Matteo Legrenzi
Download or read book Beyond Regionalism? written by Matteo Legrenzi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regional cooperation, regionalism and regionalization in the Middle East are usually considered to be weak and rather ceremonial. However, since September 11, 2001, a new regional order is emerging and the impact of geostrategic changes in the international environment has yet to be satisfactorily studied. With older regional organizations suffering from weaknesses, new forms appear to be developing and flourishing, due either to European support or growing sub-regional identities. This volume offers refined theoretical models and approaches which are attuned to the new dynamics and contradictions of a wide range of regionalist projects in the contemporary Middle East. Case studies of the most important regional organizations in different policy fields offer comprehensive overviews of the main actors, institutions, historical development and current issues.

Book Synopsis Economic Cooperation in the Wider Central Asia Region by : Martin Raiser
Download or read book Economic Cooperation in the Wider Central Asia Region written by Martin Raiser and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper explores ways to unlock the potential for regional development and economic cooperation in the wider Central Asia region. It argues that understanding critical clusters of interrelated issues, and explicitly taking into account geopolitical and political economy considerations, are key in this regard. Regional countries and other stakeholders should focus on a few areas where there are real prospects for success in the short run; a combination of modest "win-win" initiatives and in some cases "bold strokes" that augment and change the distribution of benefits and hence make cooperation more likely to deliver progress.
Book Synopsis South Africa and the Logic of Regional Cooperation by : James J. Hentz
Download or read book South Africa and the Logic of Regional Cooperation written by James J. Hentz and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2005-07-19 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In South Africa and the Logic of Regional Cooperation, James J. Hentz addresses changes in South Africa's strategies for regional cooperation and economic development since its transition from apartheid to democracy. Hentz focuses on why the new South African government continues to make regional cooperation a priority and what methods this dominant state uses to pursue its neighborly goals. While providing a synthetic overview of the history of regional cooperation in southern Africa, Hentz considers the logic of cooperation more generally. An extensive discussion of South African politics provides the context for Hentz's exploration of the more widely felt effects of domestic change. Readers interested in the international organization of the politics and economy of southern Africa will find thought-provoking material in this important book.
Book Synopsis Regionalism and Regional Security in South Asia by : Zahid Shahab Ahmed
Download or read book Regionalism and Regional Security in South Asia written by Zahid Shahab Ahmed and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zahid Shahab Ahmed evaluates the progress of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). This study goes beyond economic integration to present a detailed appraisal of cooperation under the overarching themes of economic cooperation, environmental security, human welfare, and cooperation in security matters. According to the author, SAARC is making progress in addressing the myriad of issues on its agenda. The transition from agreements to actions and frequent interactions among the member states has boosted confidence. The progress of SAARC is more evident in the less controversial areas of human security, such as poverty alleviation, health and safety, human resources development, and higher education. Notwithstanding enthusiastic commitments reflected in agreements and action plans, there is a gulf between rhetoric and implementation most notably in sensitive areas relating to traditional security. In the light of the findings of this study, the author proposes that greater cooperation in common human security areas has a potential to pave the way for a cooperation on issues of a ’contentious’ nature, particularly terrorism.
