Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gems From the Talmud: Translated Into English Verse As regards the metrical translations, which constitute the chief novel feature of this book, many of them first appeared some years ago in the Melbourne yewz's/z Herald, some in the same, some in a modified form; all the others were composed more recently in England, at various times and in different places. The idea of having these verses published was frequently suggested to me by many who were present at my lectures on the Talmud, a course of which I have had the honour to deliver in London and. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Talmud: Selections From the Contents of That Ancient Book, Its Commentaries, Teachings, Poetry, and Legends; Also, Brief Sketches of the Men Who Made and Commented Upon It The object of the following pages is to give to the student and general reader a fair idea of the contents of the Talmud. Some time since the translator was asked how it was that no English translation of the Talmud was in existence, and being convinced that many would be interested in its contents, he re solved upon the book which he now presents to the public. It is merely a collection of specimens, and makes no pretensions to any more advanced standing. The only object has been to give in plain, easy language, a correct idea of the scope, and as gen eral an idea as possible of the varied sections of the ancient and wonderful work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wit and Wisdom of the Talmud While gathering the facts for Justice to the Jew, I chanced upon so many wise pro verbs, witty sayings, beautiful parables, and quaint legends of the Talmud, that I became intensely interested in this remarkable literary production of antiquity. In its twelve folio volumes it embodies the mental labors of the ancient Jewish teachers during the period of about eight hundred years. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Urim and Thummim and Extracts From the Talmud The Bible does not distinctly tell us what the Urim and Thummim were. That they were not the twelve precious stones contained in the breast-plate, as some have erroneously imagined, is quite clear. We do not find that God directed Moses to make the Urim and Thummim, as He did when He said: And thou shalt make the breast-plate of judgment with cunning work, &c. - Exodus xxviii., r 5. It is very plain from the text itself, that the Urim and Thummim were something in addition to the breast-plate, and put therein after it was finished, by Moses himself, and therefore God says And thou shalt put into the breast-plate of judgment the Urim and Thummim. From this fact it is evident that there was something additional placed in the breast-plate by Moses, and for this reason, it is supposed that it was made double, that it might the more conveniently hold them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Talmud: Selections From the Contents of That Ancient Book, Its Commentaries, Teachings, Poetry, and Legends; Also, Brief Sketches of the Men Who Made and Commented Upon It It is probable that some errors and mistakes may be discovered, despite the care bestowed upon the pages of this book; for these the translator craves the reader's kind indulgence. The work has been to him a labour of love, and his satisfaction therewith would be incomplete, lacking such kindness. In the spelling of the proper names, he has taken advantage of a translator's arbitrary powers, and given that English version which he deems nearest to the proper pronunciation of the originals. He desires to thank the friend who aided in the revision of the manuscript and pages, for many a correction and kind suggestion; and in the sincere hope and desire that his effort may tend to promote a knowledge of God's Holy Word, he leaves his cause with the indulgent reader. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales From the Talmud The great majority of these stories come straight from the Talmud, and may be found in English translations of that work, particularly in Mr Rodkinson's translation in the Oriental Room of the British Museum. A very few have been added from the Targums, the Firke Rabbi Eliezer, and a few other works which were more or less contemporaneous with the Talmud, and evidently drew their tales from the same source. Some of the interpretations which have been put upon the legendary part of the Talmud are briefly referred to in Part I., but no pretence is made in this book either of giving a critical analysis of.
