Book Synopsis The Poems of John Dryden: 1686-1693 by : John Dryden
Download or read book The Poems of John Dryden: 1686-1693 written by John Dryden and published by Routledge. This book was released on 1995 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Dryden was the greatest writer of Restoration England. These volumes are the third and fourth volumes in a five-volume edition of Dryden's poems and result from a complete reappraisal of the canon, text and context of his work. The modernised text has been prepared from a fresh examination of the early printed editions and takes account of the large number of manuscript copies which survived. These volumes cover the poems which Dryden published between 1686-1696. This was a decade which saw the completion of his work of Catholic apologetics, The Hindand the Panther, the major translations from Juvenal and Persius, and his return to the stage after the Revolution of 1688-9 deprived him of the laureateship. Throughout these two new volumes Dryden's language is glossed in unprecedented detail, revealing the poetic precision of his vocabulary. Together with volumes one and two they offer the most informative and accessible edition of Dryden's poetry and provide an invaluable resource for students of Restoratation culture.

Book Synopsis Translation and the Classic by : Alexandra Lianeri
Download or read book Translation and the Classic written by Alexandra Lianeri and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2008-08-21 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary translation studies have explored translation not as a means of recovering a source text, but as a process of interpretation and production of literary meaning and value. Translation and the Classic uses this idea to discuss the relationship between translation and the classic text. It proposes a framework in which 'the classic' figures less as an autonomous entity than as the result of the interplay between source text and translation practice and examines the consequences of this hypothesis for questioning established definitions of the classic: how does translation mediate the social, political and national uses of 'the classics' in the contemporary global context of changing canons and traditions? The volume contains a total of eighteen original essays, plus an introduction, written by scholars working in classics and classical reception, translation studies, literary theory, comparative literature, theatre and performance studies, history and philosophy and makes a potent contribution to pressing debates in all of these areas.
Book Synopsis Restoration Theatre and Crisis by : Susan J. Owen
Download or read book Restoration Theatre and Crisis written by Susan J. Owen and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 1996-11-14 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Restoration Theatre and Crisis is a seminal study of the drama of the Restoration, in particular that of the Popish Plot and Exclusion Crisis. This was a time of unprecedented political partisanship in the theatre. This book cosniders all the known plays of this period, including works by Dryden and Behn, in their historical context. It examines the complex ways in which the drama both reflected and intervened in the political process, at a time when the crisis fractured an already fragile post-interregnum consensus, and modern party political methods first began to develop. Susan Owen discusses the ways in which Tory and Whig playwrights engaged in dramatic dialogue, deliberately commenting on and revising each other's themes and topics. The book also explores the arena of sexual politics, examining the political significance of themes such as disharmony in the family, and the importance of rape as a dramatic signifier of monstrosity associated with rebellion by the Tories and tyranny and popery by the Whigs. Restoration Theatre and Crisis considers the use of sexuality as a political discourse, and ways in which ideas about libertinism and constructions of masculinity and femininity intersect with political concerns in the drama. Thus the book bridges the gap between `gender-blind' political accounts and studies which have focused on gender themes in the drama in isolation from party politics.
