He was of noble descent on both father and mother's side, but the family was in somewhat straitened circumstances. His father, Count Leopardi, lived retired from the world, a pedant of narrow views, but of considerable erudition; a bigot who held ultramontane and medieval notions as to the prerogatives and position of the clergy and the Church, whose almost servilely devoted son he was; a father who utterly failed, if indeed he ever tried, to understand his gifted son, or win his sympathy and affection. He destined Giacomo for the Church, and could never forgive him for his refusal to devote his life to her service. The young Leopardi was sickly as a boy even, and his over-studious habits from his earliest years utterly undermined a constitution which would never have been robust. He spent his boyhood's days unchecked in his father's well-stocked library, omnivorously devouring and assimilating all that came to his hands, till at the age of sixteen already he had become a self-taught prodigy of learning. He had read through all the ancient classics, and mastered several European modern languages and Hebrew besides. Born at Recanati, a town of the March of Ancona, on the twenty-ninth of June, 1798; the eldest son of Count Monaldo Leopardi, and Adelaide, his wife, daughter of the Marquis Antici. He had four brothers and one sister - Paolina. His father possessed a splendid library, and was a man of learning and literary tastes, appearing himself as an author in prose and verse. Recanati is situated on an eminence in the Appenines, not far from Ancona and the celebrated shrine of Loreto; and as a biographer of our poet says: Its natural beauties are superb, and the genius of its great son has made them incomparable. Up to the age of twenty-four Leopardi did not leave his native place. The constant sight of so lovely a landscape, bordered in the distance by the Adriatic, contributed in no slight measure to give him that exquisite taste and sympathy for nature, for which he is unique among the poets of his country. Book excerpt: Trapped between an admiration for the classical past and a disappointment in the impoverished present, Leopardi rejected both the easy allure of Catholic faith and the unbridled optimism proposed by science and the Enlightment. In his world view, all that we love and value is illusion, the truth existing deep in our minds and souls as poignant memories, unrequited passion and stoical acceptance of nature's bleak elementals.

Book excerpt: First published in 1831, and here presented in a dual-language edition with annotations and additional reading material, Leopardi's poetical masterpiece is an unsurpassed anatomy of man's unhappiness on earth. Trapped between an admiration for the classical past and a disappointment in the impoverished present, Leopardi rejected both the easy allure of Catholic faith and the unbridled optimism proposed by science and the Enlightenment. His unflinching pessimism and existential resolve, here brilliantly rendered in verse by prize-winning translator J.G. Nichols, make him one of the most fascinating and best-loved Italian poets.

Book excerpt: This is a charming collection of English translations of the most beloved poems by Italian poet, scholar, and philosopher, Giacomo Leopardi. His remarkable philosophical works and great lyric poetry place him among the renowned writers of the 19th century. His verses are flooded with magnificence and melody, complemented by his quality of depth. Leopardi leads his readers to the brink of chasms and shows them their unimaginable depth. The most profound suffering of Leopardi's heart inspired the most beautiful passages in his poems. His frustrated hopes and despair found their best outlet in his poetry, which is loved for its passion, and effortless musicality. This translation presents the poet's thoughts as accurately as possible. It contains some of his best-known works, including To Silvia, Solitude, The Lonely Bird, etc.

Book excerpt: A New York Times Notable Book for 2011 Giacomo Leopardi is Italy's greatest modern poet, the first European writer to portray and examine the self in a way that feels familiar to us today. A great classical scholar and patriot, he explored metaphysical loneliness in entirely original ways. Though he died young, his influence was enormous, and it is no exaggeration to say that all modern poetry, not only in Italian, derives in some way from his work. Leopardi's poetry is notoriously difficult to translate, and he has been less well known to English-language readers than his central significance for his own culture might suggest. Now Jonathan Galassi, whose translations of Eugenio Montale have been widely acclaimed, has produced a strong, fresh, direct version of this great poet that offers English-language readers a new approach to Leopardi. Galassi has contributed an informative introduction and notes that provide a sense of Leopardi's sources and ideas. This is an essential book for anyone who wants to understand the roots of modern lyric poetry.

Book excerpt: Selected Poems by Giacomo Leopardi. (16 poems in the English Translation) Leopardi's Canti were written in 1835. This collection of lyric poetry is considered one of the most significant works of Italian literature. The order of the poems here published in the English translations by Alan Marshfield, Tim Chilcott, A. S. Kline, and Frederick Townsend, does not follow their original position within the structure of Leopardi's Canti. The 16 poems here published are the most valuable versions from Leopardi's Canti, available in the English language. Giacomo Leopardi, (born June 29, 1798, Recanati, Papal States-died June 14, 1837, Naples), Italian poet, scholar, and philosopher whose outstanding scholarly and philosophical works and superb lyric poetry place him among the great writers of the 19th century. Leopardi has aestheticized the theme of metaphysical contemplation and placed emphasis on 'hope' as a fulcrum for all art, the fall of which is anathema to the ego and for the World.
