Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pneumatic Dispatch The accounts given exhibit the practical progress of the system from the first public experiment at Battersea Fields, in 1861, down to January, 1868. During this period of seven years the Pneumatic system has been introduced in London with entire success, where it is now in regular operation in connection with the postal service. Thorough practical trials with reference to passenger transportation have also been had in London, which have so completely demonstrated the success and importance of the system as to warrant the construction of a Pneumatic Passenger Railway from Charing Cross, under the Thames River, to the Waterloo station of the Southwestern Railway. This road is not yet wholly completed. In this country the first public trial of the Pneumatic Railway took place at the American Institute in the fall of 1867, when many thou sands of passengers enjoyed the atmospheric ride. Charters for Pneu matic Railways have been granted in the States of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. Applications for charters are pending before the Legislatures of N ew-york and other States. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pneumatic Despatch Tube System of the Batcheller Pneumatic Tube Co: Also Facts and General Information Relating to Pneumatic Despatch Tubes I have been prompted to prepare this book by the frequent inquiries made regarding the details of our sys tem of pneumatic tubes. These inquiries have come from people interested in our company, from others interested in companies that have purchased the right to use our apparatus, from people desirous of becoming interested in a pneumatic-tube business, from would-be purchasers of pneumatic tubes, and from people interested in pneu matic tubes from a scientific, engineering, or mechanical point of View. This book is not intended to be a treatise on pneumatic tubes. In the first chapter I have given a brief sketch of what has been done in the application of pneumatic tubes from the earliest records to the present time. The second chapter contains a description of the postal tubes in Philadelphia, and the third chapter de scribes our system in detail. Following this is a Short chapter explaining the theory of pneumatic tubes, or the theory of the flow of air in long pipes, stating the more. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Book excerpt: "The best book to have been written about the Vietnam War" (The New York Times Book Review); an instant classic straight from the front lines. From its terrifying opening pages to its final eloquent words, Dispatches makes us see, in unforgettable and unflinching detail, the chaos and fervor of the war and the surreal insanity of life in that singular combat zone. Michael Herr’s unsparing, unorthodox retellings of the day-to-day events in Vietnam take on the force of poetry, rendering clarity from one of the most incomprehensible and nightmarish events of our time. Dispatches is among the most blistering and compassionate accounts of war in our literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the pantheon of air power spokesmen, Giulio Douhet holds center stage. His writings, more often cited than perhaps actually read, appear as excerpts and aphorisms in the writings of numerous other air power spokesmen, advocates-and critics. Though a highly controversial figure, the very controversy that surrounds him offers to us a testimonial of the value and depth of his work, and the need for airmen today to become familiar with his thought. The progressive development of air power to the point where, today, it is more correct to refer to aerospace power has not outdated the notions of Douhet in the slightest In fact, in many ways, the kinds of technological capabilities that we enjoy as a global air power provider attest to the breadth of his vision. Douhet, together with Hugh “Boom” Trenchard of Great Britain and William “Billy” Mitchell of the United States, is justly recognized as one of the three great spokesmen of the early air power era. This reprint is offered in the spirit of continuing the dialogue that Douhet himself so perceptively began with the first edition of this book, published in 1921. Readers may well find much that they disagree with in this book, but also much that is of enduring value. The vital necessity of Douhet’s central vision-that command of the air is all important in modern warfare-has been proven throughout the history of wars in this century, from the fighting over the Somme to the air war over Kuwait and Iraq.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nineteen-year-old Frank Friedmaier lives in a country under occupation. Most people struggle to get by; Frank takes it easy in his mother’s whorehouse, which caters to members of the occupying forces. But Frank is restless. He is a pimp, a thug, a petty thief, and, as Dirty Snow opens, he has just killed his first man. Through the unrelenting darkness and cold of an endless winter, Frank will pursue abjection until at last there is nowhere to go. Hans Koning has described Dirty Snow as “one of the very few novels to come out of German-occupied France that gets it exactly right.” In a study of the criminal mind that is comparable to Jim Thompson’s The Killer Inside Me, Simenon maps a no man’s land of the spirit in which human nature is driven to destruction—and redemption, perhaps, as well—by forces beyond its control.
