Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pleasure of Reading the Bible When I speak of the Bible I mean the English translation of the Hebrew Scriptures and the Greek Testament. The translators of these writings tapped the purest springs of the English lan guage. Whether or no they rendered the exact meanings of the original words of the Hebrew and Greek texts is, in this connection, of small matter. As it has been given us, in the Authorised and Revised Versions, the Bible is the noblest monument of English we possess; a book of magnificent language embodying the aspirations of men and women for an ideal to be cherished as an abiding influ ence on life. If it be all Word and no work, people will suffer from what I may call religious gout. On the other hand if it be all work and no Word, it will not be long before they will fall into all kinds of sin and error; so that they will do more harm than good. But if we first study the Word and then go to work, we shall be healthy, useful Christians. I never saw a fruit-bearing Chris tian who was not a student of the Bible. If a man neglects his Bible, he may pray and ask God to use him in His work; but God cannot make use of him, for there is not much for the Holy Ghost to work Upon. We must have the Word itself, which is sharper than any two-edged sword. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of Enjoying the Bible In the following pages I have tried to set down, in language as plain as I could command, an answer in some sort to the one question which comes to my ears oftener than any other; namely, How can I read the Bible so as to enjoy it Not how to read the Bible - for every one knows how to read it for one purpose or another - for conscience' sake, for ex ample, or for literary gain, or for texts to support a pet theory, or as a religious duty - but how to read it with that sense of pleasure which we think one ought to feel in reading such a book as we believe the Bible to be. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bible at a Single View: With an Appendix, How to Read the Bible Bible, sets himself to make a mental summary of it, very likely his first impression will be that what he is dealing with is history; and this from the simple fact that one who has gone through the Bible from cover to cover has been traversing the ages, from the creation of the world to some day of judgment in the future. But this is only a first impression. Closer inspection shows that what the Bible contains of history is historic framework, that serves to hold together other kinds of literature, such as story, song, discourse, drama, philosophy, epistles. These other kinds of literature, sometimes called the higher literary forms, contain the real message of Scripture. With this consideration goes another. What I am calling the historic framework must, in the nature of things, be late in its date. Only at the close of the period of ancient Israel, only at the close of the era of the primitive Church, could be made the disposition of their books which has come down to us. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story Bible N writing the Story Bible it has been my aim so to tell again the tales from Holy Writ familiar through the centuries, that our children of to-day may read and love them. The Bible is a treasury of stories, vivid, dra matic and full of charm. Each story has a hero or a heroine whose name is a household word, whose feats of valor or sacrifices of love stimulate us, as they have stimulated those who have gone before, to live noble lives; to do justly, love mercy and walk humbly before God. I have disengaged each story from sur rounding passages which treat of other affairs so that the story itself may stand out alone, like a gem or a picture. I have arranged the stories in their accustomed Biblical sequence so that they follow the order of the books in the Old and New Testaments and may later introduce their readers to the Bible in what ever version they prefer. These stories have been written with great simplicity that mothers may read them to little children, and older children read them, with pleasure, as they would read a favorite story book. People who fancy that children do not en joy good literature are mistaken. Much de pends on the early choice for them of what is best. Give a child the best and he will not be contented with the worst. The child delights in brave deeds, in romance, in chivalry, in splendid diction and poetic style. Imaginative literature fascinates children. They cannot have too much of it, from the fairy and folk lore of every nation to the beautiful truth lore scattered for them over the pages of our Eng lish Bible. Any group of listening children will hang eagerly on the story of Noah, of Abraham, of Joseph, of David, of Daniel and of the Child who came to earth in the full ness of time, when the Star led the way to the Manger. All these wondrous tales and many more stories are in this volume. I hope it may find its way wherever children meet around the hearth, and that mothers may accept its help in the training of their little ones. For Sunday afternoons and daily reading, and for quiet hours with father and mother, the Story Bible will prove a standby, themelody of its pages drawn from the one Book that never goes out of fashion and never fails to carry a heavenly message to old and young. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Domine in Bible Lands HY another book on Bible Lands? It may be asked of one who rashly ventures to inflict it on a reading public, already in pos session Of a varied and copious literature on the subject. There are books of solid instruction by distinguished Biblical scholars and careful explorers, and books of charming description and word-painting, or of travel and adventure pleasantly told - books for the student and books for the popular taste - is there any room for more, unless to relate new discoveries or to present the impressions of one who already holds the ear of the public? And what place is there for a book that professes to Offer nothing new in the way of scholarly investigation, and cannot make its appeal to the curiosity which desires to know what a great man thinks about the things he has seen? These are pertinent questions that occurred to the author when partial friends proposed to him to publish the narrative of his sight-seeing in Egypt and the Holy Land. It had not been his purpose to do this. He can truly say, to adapt the language of St. Paul, if any minister ever went to Egypt and the Holy Land without expectation of making a book on his return, I more. But after his return, in order to Share with his congregation the pleasure and profit derived from the trip, he delivered a series of Sunday evening discourses in his own church, going over the ground so often traversed, that his people might see with his eyes and Obtain his views of those lands of universal interest. These lectures were received so kindly, and their author was so strongly urged to put them before a larger audience through the press, that he yielded to persuasion; in hope that what had proved useful at home might prove not less useful elsewhere.
