Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Plays and Poems of Cyril Tourneur, Vol. 1 of 2 The delay in bringing out these volumes has arisen from my anxiety to discover something of the particulars of Tourneur's life, but I am sorry to say I have not been successful; and his biography is likely to remain a blank, unless some future explorer should be more fortunate than myself. In settling the text I have been careful to eschew conjecture, and to adhere closely to the quartos. This has been very necessary in the case of the Revenger's Tragedy, (the only one of these works which has been edited before,) as the editors have often rashly and unnecessarily tampered with the text, even where it was quite intelligible and definite. Book excerpt: Thomas Middleton (1580-1627) was one of the most prolific and fascinating playwrights of the Jacobean era, producing nearly fifty theatrical pieces in a quarter of a century. This collection comprises five of his most powerful plays, from the comedies satirizing city life, A Trick to Catch the Old One, and A Chaste Maid in Cheapside, to his later tragedies Women Beware Women and The Changeling, in which Middleton reveals a world dominated by the corrupting power of lust and subject to the futility of human pretensions. Also included is The Revenger's Tragedy, originally ascribed to Cyril Tourneur, a Revenge Play infused with sardonic wit and biting irony.

Book excerpt: Making extensive use of archival materials by Sylvia Plath, John Berryman, and Anne Sexton, Amanda Golden reframes the relationship between modernism and midcentury poetry. While Golden situates her book among other materialist histories of modernism, she moves beyond the examination of published works to address poets’ annotations in their personal copies of modernist texts. A consideration of the dynamics of literary influence, Annotating Modernism analyzes the teaching strategies of midcentury poets and the ways they read modernists like T. S. Eliot, James Joyce, Ezra Pound, Virginia Woolf, and W. B. Yeats. Situated within a larger rethinking of modernism, Golden’s study illustrates the role of midcentury poets in shaping modernist discourse.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Figures of Several Centuries" is a collection of essays written by Arthur Symons, a British poet, critic, and essayist. The book features Symons' astute observations and critiques of a wide range of literary and artistic luminaries over several centuries. Known for his contributions to English Decadent poetry and affiliated with the Symbolist movement, Symons examines the lives and works of a variety of characters in the arts and literature. The essays address a wide range of subjects, such as debates on poets, authors, and artists from many eras of history. As a literary critic, Symons analyses each person with a lyrical sensibility and a profound respect for art. In addition to providing historical context, the collection highlights the importance of several creative figures over time in various historical eras. With its insight into the rich fabric of artistic expression across the centuries, "Figures of Several Centuries" advances knowledge of the relationship between art, literature, and culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Revenge Tragedy flourished in Britain in the late Elizabethan and Jacobean period for both literary and cultural reasons. Thomas Kyd's The Spanish Tragedy (1587) helped to establish the popularity of the genre, and it was followed by The Revenger's Tragedy (1606), published anonymously and ascribed first to Cyril Tourneur and then to Thomas Middleton. George Chapman's The Revenge of Bussy D'Ambois and Tourneur's The Atheist's Tragedy were written between 1609 and 1610. Each of the four plays printed here defines the problems of the revenge genre, often by exploiting its conventions in unexpected directions. All deal with fundamental moral questions about the meaning of justice and the lengths to which victimized individuals may go to obtain it, while registering the social strains of life in a rigid but increasingly fragile social hierarchy.
