Book excerpt: Named a Best Book of Summer by Good Morning America • CNN • Parade • EW • Travel & Leisure • PopSugar • New York Post • BuzzFeed • Brit & Co • SheReads • Women.com A dazzling portrait of a young woman coming into her own, the youthful allure of sex, drugs, and rock and roll, and what we lose—and gain—when we leave home. ONCE IN A LIFETIME, YOU CAN HAVE THE TIME OF YOUR LIFE The small town of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin is an unlikely location for a Playboy Resort, and nineteen-year old Sherri Taylor is an unlikely bunny. Growing up in neighboring East Troy, Sherri plays the organ at the local church and has never felt comfortable in her own skin. But when her parents die in quick succession, she leaves the only home she’s ever known for the chance to be part of a glamorous slice of history. In the winter of 1981, in a costume two sizes too small, her toes pinched by stilettos, Sherri joins the daughters of dairy farmers and factory workers for the defining experience of her life. Living in the “bunny hutch”—Playboy’s version of a college dorm—Sherri gets her education in the joys of sisterhood, the thrill of financial independence, the magic of first love, and the heady effects of sex, drugs, and rock and roll. But as spring gives way to summer, Sherri finds herself caught in a romantic triangle—and the tragedy that ensues will haunt her for the next forty years. From the Midwestern prairie to the California desert, from Wisconsin lakes to the Pacific Ocean, this is a story of what happens when small town life is sprinkled with stardust, and what we lose—and gain—when we leave home. With a heroine to root for and a narrative to get lost in, Christina Clancy's Shoulder Season is a sexy, evocative tale, drenched in longing and desire, that captures a fleeting moment in American history with nostalgia and heart.

Book excerpt: You already know about the Bunnies, now learn about the music that helped shape Playboy. Playboy—the magazine, the empire, the lifestyle—is one of the world's best known brands. Since the launch of Playboy magazine in 1953, two elements have been remarkably consistent: the first, is the celebration of the female form. The second, readers may be surprised to learn, is Playboy's involvement in the music scene. The playboy experience has never been just about sex, but about lifestyle. Hugh Hefner's personal passion for music, particularly fine jazz, has always been an essential component of that. Full of interviews with hundreds of people who were on the scene throughout the rise, fall, and on-going renaissance, Playboy Swings carries readers on a seductive journey. Farmer focuses on Playboy's involvement in the music scene and impact on popular entertainment, and demonstrates how the empire helped change the world by integrating television and festivals. Join Patty Farmer as she guides the reader through the first inception of the Playboy empire through the 1959 Jazz Festival, and club opening after club opening. With 60 pages of photos and a complete reference guide, readers will associate music, not just Bunnies, when thinking about Playboy after reading this enthralling look into the history of one of the world's most infamous brands.

Book excerpt: Anyone who hears the word Playboy probably thinks immediately of a scantily clad co-ed reclining across the staples of one of the most successful magazines of all time. But Playboy is more than a magazine or even a corporate empire; since its start in Hugh Hefner's apartment in 1953, it has become one of the world's best-known brands and an entire lifestyle unto itself. When Hefner opened the first Playboy Club in downtown Chicago in 1960, he quite literally gave regular guys the key to participate in his own personal dream. The original Chicago club was quickly followed by venues in Miami, New Orleans, and New York, and eventually all over the United States and the world. And right from the start, world-class entertainment was as much a part of his groundbreaking formula for success as pretty girls or sirloin steaks. Each club was designed as a veritable showbiz multiplex, including a variety of bars and dining rooms as well as several stages on which veterans and up-and-coming entertainers performed. Although Hefner was primarily a jazz fan, the range of acts presented in the club was, by any standards, amazingly diverse. There were all manner of singers, from traditional headliners like Tony Bennett and world-class superstars like Liza Minnelli, Diahann Carroll, and Ann-Margaret, to nascent pop and rock stars including Sonny & Cher and Ike and Tina Turner. Jazz artists and instrumental superstars abounded as well. And the comedians...was there anyone who didn't play the Clubs? At the height of their popularity in the mid 1960s and early 1970s, the Playboy Clubs were, collectively, the largest employers of talent in the United States. As such, they exerted a powerful influence on the culture and on politics, too. As the pioneering African-American humorist Dick Gregory recalls, Hefner and his staff were not only colorblind in their hiring of talent, but used the clubs, no less than the magazine, as a means of furthering an agenda of civil rights and gender equality. While many books have been written about the Playboy Empire, the Bunny experience, and the ultimate Playboy himself, Hugh Hefner, until now, no book has covered Playboy's impact on popular entertainment and the fabulous cadre of performers who took to the stages of the mythic Playboy Clubs. Playboy on Stage tells this story from myriad points of view, in the words of dozens of musicians, singers, and comedians, as well as those involved behind the scenes. The book begins as the magazine was born, moving through the 1959 jazz festival and on to the opening of club after club. Throughout its pages are unforgettable reminiscences, anecdotes, and commentary from: Trini Lopez, Lily Tomlin, David Brenner, Jerry Van Dyke, Rich Little, Shecky Greene, Mitzi Gaynor, Steve Rossi, Ramsey Lewis, Kaye Ballard, Mimi Hines, Joan Rivers, Sonny Rollins, Al Jarreau, David Benoit When three buddies in the late 50s decided, almost as a lark, to get into the night club business, little did they realize the empire they'd build and in the process, the number of important artists they would introduce to rapt audiences. Playboy on Stage is an enduring, page-turning record of what it felt like under the spotlight, backstage, and in the audience at the world's best-loved key clubs.

Book excerpt: Professor Gail Dines has written about and researched the porn industry for over two decades. She attends industry conferences, interviews producers and performers, and speaks to hundreds of men and women each year about their experience with porn. Students and educators describe her work as “life changing.” In Pornland—the culmination of her life’s work—Dines takes an unflinching look at porn and its affect on our lives. Astonishingly, the average age of first viewing porn is now 11.5 years for boys, and with the advent of the Internet, it’s no surprise that young people are consuming more porn than ever. But, as Dines shows, today’s porn is strikingly different from yesterday’s Playboy. As porn culture has become absorbed into pop culture, a new wave of entrepreneurs are creating porn that is even more hard-core, violent, sexist, and racist. To differentiate their products in a glutted market, producers have created profitable niche products—like teen sex, torture porn, and gonzo—in order to entice a generation of desensitized users. Going from the backstreets to Wall Street, Dines traces the extensive money trail behind this multibillion-dollar industry—one that reaps more profits than the film and music industries combined. Like Big Tobacco—with its powerful lobbying groups and sophisticated business practices—porn companies don’t simply sell products. Rather they influence legislators, partner with mainstream media, and develop new technologies like streaming video for cell phones. Proving that this assembly line of content is actually limiting our sexual freedom, Dines argues that porn’s omnipresence has become a public health concern we can no longer ignore.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Being a Playboy bunny is every girls dream. Betty (Dyer) Miller found the world of Playboy to be a world full of glamour, glitz and excitement when she was chosen to be one of the very first Playboy bunnies when the Playboy Club opened in Cincinnati in 1964. Leaving the Playboy Club, she made many attempts at becoming a star. The story follows Betty as she invents many strange and unusual acts to achieve stardom. One act she attempted was being a snake dancer with her supposed boa constrictor, Sheila, which turned out to be a dangerous snake called an anaconda. We all know how fierce an anaconda can be. Another act found Betty being the Dancing Corpse, actually coming out of a casket and scaring a troop of African American cub scouts when she was doing publicity shots in a public park. This chapter is entitled Feets, Do Your Duty. Among her five husbands was celebrity Kenny Jones, who was a guitar player on the Midwestern Hayride - a popular television show that was telecast nationally. She had watched Kenny on the show for years, never dreaming that one day she would meet him and even marry him. What a thrill that had to have been. Being married to Kenny threw her into the world of top name performers like Kris Kristofferson and Johnny Paycheck who would jam with Kenny at a club called Whiteys in Cincinnati. Betty also narrowly escaped being one of the Cincinnatis Stranglers victims as she encountered him one night after leaving the Playboy Club. Her encounter with him is chilling and will have readers on the edge of their seats. Readers will be memorized by her story. Should Hollywood ever get hold of it, the life and times of Betty Miller would make and excellent and very entertaining movie.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published for the first time in 1953, Playboy was not only the first pornographic popular magazine in America; it also came to embody an entirely new lifestyle through the construction of a series of utopian multimedia spaces — from the Playboy Mansion and fictional Playboy’s Penthouse of 1959 to the Playboy Clubs and hotels appearing around the world in the 1960s. Simultaneously, the invention of the contraceptive pill provided access to a biochemical technique that separated (hetero) sexuality and reproduction. Addressing these concurrent cultural shifts, Paul Preciado investigates the strategic relationships between space, gender, and sexuality in popular sites related to the production and consumption of pornography that have tended to reside at the margins of traditional histories of architecture: bachelor pads, multimedia rotating beds, and design objects, among others. Combining historical perspectives with contemporary critical theory, gender and queer theory, porn studies, the history of technology, and a range of primary transdisciplinary sources — treatises on sexuality, medical and pharmaceutical handbooks, architecture journals, erotic magazines, building manuals, and novels — Pornotopia explores the use of architecture as a biopolitical technique for governing sexual relations and the production of gender in the postwar United States.
