Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Planting of Home Grounds The nature of our home. Surroundings play a vastly greater part in our daily welfare than most of us realize or appreciate. The immediate home surroundings are unconsciously considered as part and parcel of the home, _ and the nature and character of the people living there will be judged far more often by what is seen outside of the house than by what may be within. This problem is worth considering from the standpoint of keeping up the interest of the boys and girls in the home. Neat and attract ive home surroundings of which a boy or girl may be justly proud will be a powerful factor in the development of a contented and happy life. The question, why the boy leaves the farm, might often be answered by pointing to the slovenly and untidy home surroundings. The home in all too many cases is only an additional shed for the shelter ing of the human live stock of the farm and often this shed is the least attractive of the entire collection. From the mere standpoint of dollars and cents the home surround ings become important. Nothing will add more to the value of the entire property, than neat, well planted and well cared for home grounds. Every one would rather live in a home of this kind, and in a community of such homes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Good number of plants: they should be placed with good taste. So this little book is about this subject - how to choose, arrange, and plant the home place. As every place is different, so is every one a problem by itself; but as there are controlling motives and regulations for painting and for music and for good writing, so are there certain guides to the disposition of the planting. The large and pretentious places - the estates - will have the advantage of the landscape architect's advice; all places profit greatly by such advice, often the small places even more than the large ones, yet the middle-class homes usually do not employ professional talent. This booklet cannot take the place of the artist who makes a study of a particular property. I know, however, that the artist will not be em ployed, perhaps even when he is most needed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Landscape Garden Series, Planting the Home Grounds The results produced by planting are so strikingly obvious that the layman is but indifferently impressed with the other factors of a successful landscape plan, and as a consequence, landscape develop ment, whatever the type, finds favor or disfavor in the popular eye solely from the point of view of planting. This fact is a source of some discouragement to the intelligent designer, who realizes that good design is the real basis of his work, and cherishes that above all else. Without a good design as a basis for landscape development, plant material ceases to function as a delightful medium in which to render the plan, but serves instead as a means for covering up or blotting out unsightly mistakes. According to natural sequence, the design is the most important factor in a landscape development, for unless an intelligent design is first prepared for the whole development, much time, labor and expense will be wasted. Planting is next in importance, for it is the material medium that gives life to the design. But so far as popular approval is concerned, the landscape architect realizes that practically his only source of satisfaction in working out a good design is his own artistic conscience, and that the public loudly praises a successful planting. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook for Planning and Planting Small Home Grounds: With a List of Native and Commonly Cultivated Plants That Are Represented in the Collection Upon the Stout Manual Training School Grounds The Stout Manual Training School, a complete system of travelling libraries, a travelling art gallery, with the collection of plants referred to and described in this handbook, and the other educational influences grouped about the school and leading out from it, have all grown out of the desire of a citizen of Menomonie to benefit a region wherein he has lived and which has contributed to his successful business career. It is worthy of record, too, that the town wherein this school is located, its leading citizens, and especially its women, have heartily cooperated with their benefactor in the rebuilding of the school since its total destruction by fire in 1897, the women alone agreeing to raise the money required for grading the grounds. Menomonie, Wisconsin, is a city of about 7, 000 inhabitants, on the Chicago St. Paul line of the Chicago Northwestern Railway systems. Also on a branch of the Chicago, Milwaukee St. Paul Railroad. Its principal industries are the manufacture of lumber and brick. There are extensive deposits of clay also found near by, suitable for the manufacture of pottery and porcelain. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Gardening: A Practical Guide, to the Making of Home Grounds and the Growing of Flowers, Fruits, and Vegetables for Home Use Of course an author cannot hold himself responsible for failures that his reader may suffer. The statements in a book of this kind are in the nature of advice, and it may or it may not apply in particular conditions, and the success or failure is the result mostly of the judgment and carefulness of the operator. I hope that no reader of a gardening book will ever conceive the idea that reading a book and following it literally will make him a gardener. He must always assume his own risks, and this will be the first step in his personal progress. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The degree of success with many of these plants varies in different localities. The Ericaceae, including many of the broad-leaved evergreen plants in common use in eastern states, are without exception unsuccessful in the limestone soil region of the Middle West. The extreme climatic variations in the same section reduce the number of dependable coniferous evergreens to a dissatisfying minimum. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Syllabus of Illustrated Lecture on Farm Home Grounds, Their Planting and Care The next Slide shows a farm home. The whole place looks comfortable. It invites you to come in and sit with the family by the fireside. It is a home; you would like to live there. A few trees, a vine or two, and some grass may make the dif ference between a house and a home. A house is merely a Shelter, a place where people stay. A home is a house, with evi dences in and about it that the people who live there love it. They have taken the trouble to make it attractive and inviting. There are in this country too many farmhouses and too few farm homes. Yet no one loves his family more than the farmer or is more interested in their welfare. His neglect of their surroundings is not from lack of affection but lack of knowledge and appreciation of the effect Of Shrubs, trees, vines, and a well-kept lawn Upon the family life. Farm homes ought to be the most attractive of all homes, Since they are in the open country where plants live and are free to grow. Very few farms are as unfortunately situated as that shown in this picture. This is a farmhouse on a cattle range in one of the semiarid regions of the West, beyond the possibility of irrigation. The landscape is drear and desolate. Not a tree can be seen - only a waste of sagebrush and cacti. The desert has a charm of its own, but without irrigation this house can never be made homelike on the outside, whatever it may be within. How different is the scene in the next picture, which shows a farm home under more favorable circumstances. Grass and trees, the two most important aids to home adornment, grow luxuriantly. It is easy to have an attractive home under these conditions. The great majority Of American farms are located Where trees, grass, and flowers grow without special care; if, therefore, the home is not attractive, it is-due solely to the negligence of those who are entrusted with its care. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gardening in the South IS book owes its being to the fact that up to the present time literature dealing with the planting of home grounds in the middle and upper South has not been obtainable. Nothing specific has been written to help the Southern home owner solve the problems connected with the planting and maintenance of beautiful grounds. It is true that a book on gardening appeared which dealt entirely with plants and conditions encountered along the Southern coastal country and the State of Florida, this section having an almost entirely different flora from the middle and upper South. Book excerpt: In a time of climate change and mass extinction, how we garden matters more than ever: “An outstanding and deeply passionate book.” —Marc Bekoff, author of The Emotional Lives of Animals Plenty of books tell home gardeners and professional landscape designers how to garden sustainably, what plants to use, and what resources to explore. Yet few examine why our urban wildlife gardens matter so much—not just for ourselves, but for the larger human and animal communities. Our landscapes push aside wildlife and in turn diminish our genetically programmed love for wildness. How can we get ourselves back into balance through gardens, to speak life's language and learn from other species? Benjamin Vogt addresses why we need a new garden ethic, and why we urgently need wildness in our daily lives—lives sequestered in buildings surrounded by monocultures of lawn and concrete that significantly harm our physical and mental health. He examines the psychological issues around climate change and mass extinction as a way to understand how we are short-circuiting our response to global crises, especially by not growing native plants in our gardens. Simply put, environmentalism is not political; it's social justice for all species marginalized today and for those facing extinction tomorrow. By thinking deeply and honestly about our built landscapes, we can create a compassionate activism that connects us more profoundly to nature and to one another.
