Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Plan of Salvation Man has by observation and experience learned that the laws of God are deep, high, and wide; that, after ages and ages of study, he is still confronted with many secrets and unexplored fields of beauties and harmonies in the created and the laws governing such. Man was placed in a world teeming with all kinds of birds and fowls; animals, wild and domestic; waters, in all shapes and depths; and upon the earth, all kinds of plants and trees; in the earth, all kinds of metals; and planets, huge in size, flying with electric speed around and above us. Although creation is marvelously wonderful, the laws by which the created are governed are almost as wonderful as creation itself. Everything, from the smallest to the greatest, has a governing law. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel Plan of Salvation Every writer has a taste and a style as peculiarly his own as are his fea tures or his temperament; hence no two are likely to select exactly the same field of labor, or adopt the same method of arranging the material used by each respectively. While others have written upon some, perhaps all, the subjects treated in this work, we are not aware of any single book filling the place which this is designed to occupy. While it is directly addressed to the alien, we hope it will aid the young disciple in obtaining a more extensive knowledge of the form of doctrine by which Che was made free from sin especially will youngpreac/zer; find it a valuable compend of argnnzenl and rrilieal aut/zoriz'y in ellucidation of many subjects which they will find it necessary to examine. They will here find an amount of authority which would cost them much labor and money were they compelled to get it from the original authors quoted by us. Many of the works are out of print, so that only second-hand copies can be had at all, and these only by importa tion at fabulous cost. We found it necessary to pay ten, fifteen, and even as high as twenz'yzfiz'e dollars for works from which to obtain the author's defini tion of a single word, which will be found in this work. Many of these authors define in Latin which could not be read by the common English scholar if he had them; here he will find only the English translation of the author's Latin, which all can read and easily understand. A few leading facts, however, may be given, with the hope, that at some future time not far distant, an abler pen may undertake that labour of love. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christ's Plan of Salvation: A Bible Study But when the fullness of time had come for the one great sacrificial atonement which had been shadowed forth in the law and proclaimed in the lofty imagery of the prophetic poets, the Christ made his advent, and by his obla tion of himself once ofiered, made a full, perfect and sufficient sacrifice, oblation and satisfaction for the sins of the whole world. By this sacrifice so ample, Christ did away with the ofierings and rites which were a necessary part of a system of salvation works, and inaugurated the reign of salvation by faith. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Essay on the Plan of Salvation But as 'to those persons, if any such there be, who upon the first careless glance are entirely prepared, and think themselves fully qualified, to fix the charge of heresy upon a publication, their sovereign and masterly decision, 1 think, is beneath' the attention' of every reflecting mind. Their great and capable minds, it would seem, are under no necessity to submit to the drudgery of close and laborious thinking, in order to distinguish truth from falsehood; but are at once prepared, with intuitive infallibility, to judge of every book and of every subject, without the pains of ex amination, or even almost without reading or hearing them. What is the evidence on which they decide? Such as the follow ing: the thing is a novelty: - l never heard it before -my father. Never believed itz - lt is not believed by our party: - I am sure it is false - Hoping the reader will pardon me for supposing it possi ble, that there may be persons of this sort in the world, I drop the present allusion, and proceed to notice a few other particulars. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution and the Need of Atonement As the title indicates, the main object of this book is not to offer a new theory of the Atonement. Rather it is intended to Show that when the origin and history of man are studied from the scientific, and especially the biological side, the spiritual life, its partial failure, and the need for Atonement, far from receding into vagueness and unreality, are thrown into strong relief. Book excerpt: In the midst of the Christian world there are very many conflicting theories, in relation to man's existence here and hereafter; also as to the duties he owes to himself, his fellow-man and to his Creator. It is an undisputed question that some knowledge of WHERE WE CAME FROM, WHY WE ARE HERE, AND WHERE WE GO AFTER WE LEAVE THIS PROBATION, is essential to the enjoyment and well-being of the human family. In the following pages of this tract we shall seek to briefly set forth the belief of the Latter-day Saints on these points. While they may differ widely from the accepted ideas of the Christian world, we may be allowed to mildly suggest, that this difference is not so much between the sects of the day and the Latter-day Saints, as it is between those sects and the Bible, a fact for which we are in no sense responsible, and a fact that we can in nowise alter or change, even were we so disposed. It is deemed proper in the commencement of this investigation, to refer to another point, so that we may clearly understand each other. It is this: sincerity of belief does not by any means establish the correctness of a principle. Testimony of an unimpeachable character can alone do that. Man's belief does not affect a principle in the least. The whole world may believe it and yet it be untrue; the whole world may refuse to believe it, and yet it be true. The unbelief of the people of Noah's day did not stay the flood; the unbelief of the Jews did not prove Jesus an impostor; and the killing of the apostles did not prove their doctrines false. The assassination of Joseph Smith was no proof one way or another as to the divine nature of his authority; neither will the rejection of the doctrines he taught prove them wrong. If they are true, though he was slain, his followers mobbed, driven and persecuted, yet in the end they will rise triumphant over every obstacle and grow stronger and stronger, as error shall grow weaker and weaker. In presenting the principles of pre-existence, the first principles of the gospel and baptism for the dead, we shall simply quote scripture; and we again state that if there is any difference of opinion it is between the reader and holy writ. The apostle Paul's injunction to the Thessalonians, was: "Prove all things: hold fast that which is good" (I.Thess. 5:21); and the wise man Solomon's assertion, was: "He that judgeth a matter before he heareth it is not wise."

Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Some Antiquities in the Neighbourhood of Dunecht House Aberdeenshire It was known to the archaeologist that there were ogam inscriptions in the district, two Of them being among the most important in Caledonia; and that within an easy motor drive there was a minuscule inscription of six lines Of which no satisfactory explanation had been given. This inscription they had visited in a previous year. Further, the quick eye Of the hostess of Dunecht had caught sight of some curious sculptures on a stone by the road-side on the way to the minus cule inscription; and other like stones in the neighbourhood had been shewn in Stuart's two volumes of Sculptural Stones of Scotland. The suggestion was then made that for the sake of visitors at Dunecht a sort Of guide book should be prepared, giving some simple description of the several Objects and their meaning and uses. In saving sinful men may not God proceed in an emergent and haphazard fashion, adjusting his saving acts to the Circumstances as they occur in human history? May not the facts of the Gospel be without order, incapable of being reduced to any programme whatsoever? If so, there can be no soteriology, o-r systematic exposition of a gospel plan of salvation. There are three proofs for the fact of an ordo salu tis: (i) biblical, (2) logical, (3) analogical. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Moses Christ: Or the Plan of the World's Salvation, Illustrated by Bible Allegories This book first came into existence in response to the expressed wish of many readers of The World's Hope. In issuing a Revised Edition, I have gracefully to acknowledge the interest manifested in the little work, as evidenced by its comparatively rapid circulation, the general tone of the comments it has called out even from those not accepting all its teaching, by the earnest call of many for a new edition, and by their willingness to help. It evidently has been, as was hoped, a means of spiritual blessing to many. The special design of the book is to show that the characters and histories of Moses' writings, especially of the book of Generals, are pictures or allegories of the gospel plan. It is also designed, directly or indirectly, to present the general teaching of the Bible, and to show the fullness of God's Love underlying his Purpose and Plan in the Creation and Redemption of Mankind, - that is, in bringing the Race up to His own image. Reference is sometimes made in these pages to the book, "Day Dawn, or The Gospel in Typo and Prophecy." This work may properly be regarded as a sequel to that, being a further development of "The Gospel in Type and Prophecy."
