Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the growing emphasis on project management skills across most industries, the need for effectively communicating a project's status is just as important as the skills of executing the project itself. Sadly, however, most training courses and books fail to address this subject entirely or brush over it quickly. It is often implied that pulling out the important details of your project should be easy and packaging it for your team, senior sponsors or clients will naturally occur. The reality is many status reports fail to convey the status and needs of a project. Status meetings often lack the focus needed to effective communicate the project's status and direct future actions. The result of this ineffective communication contributes to the number of project failures. During project post mortems, we often uncover warning signs that were never presented or were buried in a sea of information. To the project team's credit, they often knew of the problems, but their inability to communicate it through the status reporting process doomed them with every report. This book provides a simple and effective method to create and communicate project status. This is the method that I personally follow and introduce to people I mentor. When I first started managing projects I struggled to communicate project status correctly and often became frustrated at how status meetings were conducted. So I started researching the experts to see what they recommended. Some provided high-level or obvious tips and many appeared as if they never actually reported status before. I did learn one thing however. Reporting status correctly is not difficult provided you have the right framework. That is what you will learn here.

Book excerpt: Our nation is still reeling from the 346 fatalities suffered on two flights of the Boeing 737 MAX 8 planes, the first in May 2017 and the second in March 2019. These are just one of the series of costly and deadly consequences of defective products described in this book. Besides the Boeing 737 planes, the examples of bad products include automobiles, electrical energy networks, pipelines, bridges and other large structures, banks, drinkable water, and financial services. While the immediate or proximate causes of the disasters have been bad design or bad production, the root or underlying causes have been bad corporate management and business cultures caused by corporate leaders. The final five chapters provide short essays on product design, production, quality control, management, and culture and what the leaders of our private companies and government agencies might do to reduce the pitfalls that have led to so many defective products and their dire consequences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Goal Directed Project Management (GDPM) is a unique methodology that has been developed and refined by the authors over a period of more than 20 years. In this time, organizations all over the world have adopted it as a standard approach. The central focus of Goal Directed Project Management, this fourth edition of one of the most influential project management books, is to develop understanding, commitment and involvement while managing successful and lasting change. Throughout the text, the authors emphasise the need for a 'PSO' (People, System and Organization) perspective that goes beyond the technical aspects dealt with by most project management literature, enhancing and prolonging the life of a project by allowing the people and organization involved to develop simultaneously with the system. Goal Directed Project Management gives detailed and practical guidance on how to plan, organise and control these PSO projects effectively, presenting methods and tools that will increase significantly the probability of project success. This newly updated fourth edition of Goal Directed Project Management addresses the financial control of projects in a new chapter, presenting a pragmatic approach - based on GDPM methods - to this aspect of project management. It includes guidelines to take you through setting up a project budget based on cost benefit analysis and shows how to report and control the running project using the milestone related budget. Online resources now include an additional chapter on GDPM in a multi-project environment. Further information about GDPM certification can be found at www.gdpm.com

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methods of IT Project Management (Third Edition) is built around the latest version of the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) and covers best practices unique to the IT field. It is designed for use in graduate, advanced undergraduate, and professional IT project management courses to prepare students for success in the IT field, and to prepare them to pass the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification exam given by the Project Management Institute (PMI), the world's leading certification in the field of project management. Unlike other project management texts, Methods of IT Project Management follows the IT project life cycle, from overview and initiation to execution, control, and closing. An enterprise-scale IT project (macro-case study) runs through the entire text. Each section presents mini-cases based on the larger case and focuses on new concepts presented in each section. Readers gain practical knowledge of IT project management workflows, at scale, while building technical knowledge and skills required to pass the PMP. Mini-case studies encourage deep retention, prompt rich in-class discussion, and challenge more advanced students and professionals alike. Unique skills covered can be put directly into practice. An appendix presents practice study questions and advice on preparing for and passing the PMP exam. The revised third edition includes expanded coverage of agile system development methodologies, leadership and negotiation skills, and process maturity models.
