Book excerpt: The Yellow River Piano Concerto (1969) by Yin Chengzong (b. 1941), the most popular piano concerto in China, was composed at the time of the Chinese Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution, or simply the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976). It was intentionally written as a rearrangement of its predecessor - the 1939 Yellow River Cantata by Xian Xinghai (1905 - 1945). Created with strong political motivations and ideologies, the concerto was considered appropriately nationalistic and consistent with the principle of "soviet realism," especially by the Chinese musical world before the 1980s. Specifically, motivated by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), the composition of the piano concerto carries many connections with the musical works by the renowned Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian, including imitations of national instruments and applications of folk music. After the Cultural Revolution, Yin and his Yellow River Piano Concerto underwent severe repression due to Yin's misunderstood relationship with the Gang of Four, a group later charged with causing chaos and tragedy during the political movement. As China becomes more open and wealthy, the Yellow River Piano Concerto has undergone a resurgence of popularity and is now recognized as one of the first large musical forms created by Chinese composers. Additionally, Yin and his work played a critical role in making the piano the most common instrument among a new generation of Chinese performers and composers.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this dissertation is to offer a study of the modern piano concerto in China, though focusing on Postures, the 2014 concerto by the Chinese-American composer Zhou Long. The thesis explores the impact of Western music on modern Chinese music and how it combines with, mixes with, perhaps even makes one with, traditional Chinese musical elements. This study aims, in particular, to be an aid in the future for both performers and audiences in understanding and appreciating this important composition of Dr. Zhou. Chapter I outlines the development of the piano concerto in China. Chapter II is an introduction at once to Zhou Long’s life and to his works; it likewise focuses on his piano compositions. Chapters III to V examine Zhou Long’s way of fitting traditional Chinese elements into what is outwardly distinctly Western music—for example, the form of the piano concerto—through a movement-by-movement analysis of Postures. This analysis consists of an examination, conjointly, of historical and theoretical aspects. These include relevant information about Chinese music history; ethnic folk dance; traditional Chinese musical elements; analysis of the concerto’s form, structure, harmony, and rhythm. There will also be consideration of piano performance practice in relation to this work. I hope this thesis, along with showing Zhou Long’s specific importance as a composer, will also shed light more generally on various key characteristics of modern piano music in China, and most specifically on the genre of the piano concerto.

For much of its existence its cultivation was sporadic, but in the last four decades the Chinese piano concerto has blossomed along with the research of the genre. This study provides a brief history of the Chinese piano concerto. It also presents an overview of existing scholarship on the subject, both in English and Chinese. Finally, this study illustrates the compositional problems faced by Chinese composers writing in a Western genre with analysis of three representative concertos. The three concertos are: (1) Jiang Wenye's Piano Concerto No. 1, Op. 16 (1936); (2) Yellow River Piano Concerto (1969), arranged by Yin Chengzong, Chu Wanghua, Sheng Lihong, Liu Zhuang, Xu Peixing, and Shi Shucheng from Yellow River Cantata composed by Xian Xinghai in 1939; and (3) Zhao Xiaosheng's Piano Concerto No. 1, "Aphrodite" (1985).

The piano concerto is based on a previous composition--the Yellow River Cantata (1938) by Xian Xinghai (1909-1945). Like its namesake, the Yellow River, the piano concerto has a tumultuous history and background. The piano concerto was arranged by a group of four composers: Yin Chengzong (b. 1941), Chu Wanghua (b. 1941), Sheng Lihong (b. 1926), and Liu Zhuang (b. 1932) during the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976). Prior to the concerto, all forms of Western music were banned and classical musicians suffered great persecution. The Yellow River Piano Concerto displays aspects of Chinese nationalism and Socialist Realism fused together in virtuosic pianistic display. The People's Republic of China often sought to emulate the Soviet Union, which was considered the elder brother and a suitable model. Ideologies, political practices, cultural reform and the revolutions of the Soviet Union were adapted and sinified by the Communist Party in China by Mao Zedong (1893-1976). This document examines the influences of Mao's Socialist Realism and revolutionary Romanticism on the Yellow River Piano Concerto as contained in his Talks at the Yan'an Forum on Literature and Art (1942) and Jiang Qing's speeches of 1964. The use of the piano and the form of the concerto raises many questions, as these contradicted the revolutionary elements of nationalism and Communism. The piano is not an instrument native to China, and the concerto form elevates a soloist above an orchestra. The document aims to discover the justification for the use of the piano, a Western instrument, which was considered bourgeois during the Cultural Revolution. Virtuosity and folk-like simplicity are both exploited with a political agenda in the concerto. The concerto had to embody the revolutionary slogans, "Make the old serve the new" and "Foreign things to serve China", to legitimize the piece. The Yellow River Piano Concerto displays the practice of the cultural and artistic policies of the Cultural Revolution and their contradictions.

To celebrate the 2008 Summer Olympic Games held in Beijing, his work Concerto for Ten Concert Grand Pianos and Orchestra was commissioned by the Dean of the National Center for the Performing Arts, Mr. Ping Chen. Ten internationally-renowned pianists were invited to give the world premiere on August 19, 2008. The pianists were Claude Frank, Phillippe Entremont, Vladimir Feltsman, Louis Lortie, Yunyi Qin, Shikun Liu, Lang Lang, Cyprien Katsaris, Guillermo Gonzalez, and Sha Chen. This piece was originally conceived as Concerto for Ten Concert Grand Pianos and Orchestra, and was composed in 2008 with the title China Jubilee. The original concerto for ten pianos was never published. The only published edition of this work is for two pianos, with the second piano serving as the orchestral reduction, with a different title: Piano Concerto No. 2. The work contains four movements. My dissertation contains four chapters. Chapter I, a brief history of the development of keyboard instruments in China, includes information about several important pianists who contributed to the development of the piano and to Chinese piano music. Chapter II gives an overview of Shiguang Cui's career as a composer, his works for the keyboard, and background information on the Piano Concerto No. 2. Chapter III contains a stylistic analysis of the Concerto No. 2, including pentatonic scale techniques, use of the interval of a fourth, and the employment of traditional Chinese textural techniques as well as Western rhythmic and textural compositional techniques. Chapter IV discusses the influence of Chinese traditional musical elements in the Piano Concerto No. 2. These include Chinese folksongs and dances, quotation from Chinese operas, and the influence of Chinese instruments. Piano Concerto No. 2 is an important contribution to the genre and to the development of Chinese piano music. My hope is that more Chinese works will be composed, and that more pianists will be inspired to learn and perform Cui's Piano Concerto No. 2 as well as his solo piano music. --Page ii.
