Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Physiology of Gout, Rheumatism, and Arthritis: As a Guide to Accurate Diagnosis, and Efficient Treatment My medical friends have frequently asked me to explain my 'theories' of Gout, Rheumatism, and Arthritis. I have no theories. Regarding disorders of the 'arthritic' class not as diseases but as physiological aberrations, I have endeavoured to ascertain the nature of the normal functions and the results which happen when they are imperfectly performed. By doing so I find myself able to interpret the symptoms which such cases present, and when this has been done the appropriate and efficient remedy for the individual patient suggests itself. This is only a brief summary of my investigations, but I hope it will prove helpful to the practitioner and enable him to give the 'arthritic' patient a more hopeful outlook than has hitherto been possible. Book excerpt: Gout: Basic Science and Clinical Practice is a thoroughly researched comprehensive text which covers all important aspects of gout, including its genetics, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management. Gout is probably the most common rheumatic disease after osteoarthritis and is becoming more common with the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome in the US, and in many other countries. Only about 10% of patients with gout are treated by rheumatologists and this often leads to inadequate diagnosis and treatment in general medical practice. Written by an expert in the field this book is valuable reference for rheumatologists and others in the medical profession who are interested in understanding and managing this important disease.

There have been significant developments in our understanding of the basic biology of gout over the last decade, and major advances in therapeutics have provided successful treatments for acute attacks and long-term prevention, offering clinicians effective treatment options for their patients. Part of the Oxford Rheumatology Library series, Gout provides an up-to-date summary of the pathogenesis, clinical features, and treatment approaches to this condition. The main focus is on key aspects of the biology of the disease, relevant diagnostic tools, and principles of gout management. Practical information is included to guide safe and effective prescribing of gout medications. Chapters on imaging and the future of gout management are also included. The three authors are experts in the basic biology and therapeutics of gout, and have summarized key practice points in a concise and readable manner, making this comprehensive yet practical volume an essential resource for all rheumatologists and general practitioners.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This brand new textbook of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an important addition to the Oxford Textbooks in Rheumatology series, and provides a comprehensive overview of both the scientific and clinical aspects of the disease. Divided into eight sections - from the history, diagnosis, and epidemiology of the disease, through the pathogenesis, clinical presentation, and assessment to treatments and management strategies, both drug- and non-drug based - each chapter is written by leading clinicians and scientists in the field to deliver a contemporary view of RA. During the past two decades there have been revolutionary changes in the understanding and management of rheumatoid arthritis, in particular the development of biological treatments. This has had wide-ranging effects on almost all aspects of treatment, from effectiveness and intensity to the nature and the cost. Providing a comprehensive account of the modern ideas about the disease, the Oxford Textbook of Rheumatoid Arthritis is a key new addition to the literature, with each chapter providing a detailed background, key recent advances, and areas of doubt and future developments. Featuring over 170 photographs, radiological images, and clinical charts to aid both diagnosis and illustrate the rationale behind key scientific studies, this new title will prove an indispensable resource for specialist rheumatologists, trainees in rheumatology, and other members of the multi-disciplinary team.
