Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hardbound. This book discusses the findings of most of the active researchers in taxonomy, molecular biology, ecology, physiology and toxicology, and public health officials concerned with the apparent global epidemic of harmful, toxic, noxious and nuisance phytoplankton events in the sea. It will be of great value to public health officials and organizations; coastal management specialists; international, national, regional and state agencies concerned with the sea and its resources; and aquaculturists.

Book Synopsis Cell Cycle Dynamics and the Physiology of Saxitoxin Biosynthesis in Alexandrium Fundyense (Dinophyceae) by : Gaspar Taroncher Oldenburg
Download or read book Cell Cycle Dynamics and the Physiology of Saxitoxin Biosynthesis in Alexandrium Fundyense (Dinophyceae) written by Gaspar Taroncher Oldenburg and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 738 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine dinoflagellates in the genus Alexandrium synthesize Saxitoxin (STX) and several of its derivatives. The aim of this thesis was to analyze novel aspects of toxigenesis and the cell cycle in Alexandrium and to apply molecular techniques to gain new insights on the regulation of STX biosynthesis. Synchronized cultures of A. fundyense were studied to determine the dynamics of toxin production throughout the cell cycle. STX biosynthesis was shown to be discontinuous and constrained to approximately 10 hours at the beginning of G1. Two cell cycle transition points were identified: a light-dependent one and a size-dependent one. Semi-continuous cultures of A. fundyense were used to determine the effects of temperature and phosphate limitation on the coupling of STX biosynthesis to O%. Inferred toxin production rates were constant and correlated to G1 over a range of growth rates. The effects of phosphate on STX biosynthesis were analyzed and a scheme of interconversions among STX derivatives is proposed. Differential Display (DD) analysis was applied to the identification of up- or downregulated genes during toxigenesis in A. fundyense. The expression patterns of S-adenosylhomocysteine hydrolase, methionine aminopeptidase and a histone-like protein were related to periods of STX biosynthesis.

Book Synopsis Marine Biotoxins by : Hans P. Egmond
Download or read book Marine Biotoxins written by Hans P. Egmond and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2004 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper provides an extensive review of different aspects of five shellfish-poisoning syndromes (paralytic, diarrhoeic, amnesic, neurologic and azapiracid), as well as one fish-poisoning syndrome (ciguatera fish poisoning), and discusses in detail the causative toxins produced by marine organisms, chemical structures and analytical methods of the toxins, habitat and occurrence of the toxin-producing organisms, case studies and existing regulations. Based on this analysis, risk assessments are carried out for each of the toxins, and recommendations are elaborated to improve the management of these risks in order to reduce the harmful effect of these toxins on public health.
Book Synopsis Marine Dinoflagellates by : R. Santhanam
Download or read book Marine Dinoflagellates written by R. Santhanam and published by Nova Science Pub Incorporated. This book was released on 2015-03 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine dinoflagellates, one of the most important components in phytoplankton are receiving much attention owing to their toxicity. They are responsible for causing toxic blooms and associated poisonings such as Paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP), Neurotoxic shellfish poisoning (NSP), Diarrhetic shellfish poisoning (DSP), Azaspiracid shellfish poisoning (ASP) and Ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP) in humans all over the world. However, recent research has shown that such toxins could be of great use therapeutically. Aspects such as the identification of dinoflagellate species; harmful dinoflagelllate blooms and associated poisonings as well as their bioluminescence and biotechnological applications have been dealt with in detail. A comprehensive book on marine dinoflagellates is hitherto wanted and needed, and it is hoped that the present publication would cater to the needs of students of life science disciplines in general and marine biology and fisheries science disciplines in particular.

Book Synopsis Real-time Coastal Observing Systems for Marine Ecosystem Dynamics and Harmful Algal Blooms by : Babin, Marcel
Download or read book Real-time Coastal Observing Systems for Marine Ecosystem Dynamics and Harmful Algal Blooms written by Babin, Marcel and published by UNESCO. This book was released on 2008-06-05 with total page 880 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proliferation of harmful phytoplankton in marine ecosystems can cause massive fish kills, contaminate seafood with toxins, impact local and regional economies and dramatically affect ecological balance. Real-time observations are essential for effective short-term operational forecasting, but observation and modelling systems are still being developed. This volume provides guidance for developing real-time and near real-time sensing systems for observing and predicting plankton dynamics, including harmful algal blooms, in coastal waters. The underlying theory is explained and current trends in research and monitoring are discussed.Topics covered include: coastal ecosystems and dynamics of harmful algal blooms; theory and practical applications of in situ and remotely sensed optical detection of microalgal distributions and composition; theory and practical applications of in situ biological and chemical sensors for targeted species and toxin detection; integrated observing systems and platforms for detection; diagnostic and predictive modelling of ecosystems and harmful algal blooms, including data assimilation techniques; observational needs for the public and government; and future directions for research and operations.
