Book excerpt: "The Physicians of Myddfai"("Meddygon Myddvai" in Welsh), or "The medical practice of the celebrated Rhiwallon and his sons, of Myddfai, in Carmarthenshire, physicians to Rhys Gryg, lord of Dynevor and Ystrad Towy," was written about the middle of the 13th century. The collection of herbal remedies are associated with Rhiwallon Feddyg (eldest son of the Lady of the Lake), founder of a medical dynasty that lasted over 500 years and comes from the manuscript called the "Red Book of Hergest," a large vellum manuscript written in Welsh shortly after 1382. The manuscript derives its name from the colour of its leather binding and from its association with Hergest Court between the late 15th and early 17th century. The Physicians of Myddfai practised in the village of Myddfai near the market town of Llandovery in Wales, healing subjects with their herb lore and potions as well as their mystical powers and insight into the human condition.

These offer practical treatments for a variety of everyday conditions such as toothache, constipation and gout. The recipes have been edited from the four earliest collections of Welsh medical texts in manuscript, which date from the late fourteenth century. A series of notes provides sources and analogues for the recipes, demonstrating their relationship with the European medical tradition. The identification of herbal ingredients in the recipes is based on pre-modern plant-name glossaries rather than modern dictionaries, and has led to new interpretations of many of the recipes. Comprehensive glossaries allow the reader to find any recipe based on the ingredients and equipment used in it or the condition treated. This new interpretation of these texts clearly shows that they are not unique, but rather form part of the medical tradition that was common throughout Europe during the Middle Ages.

Book excerpt: About the Book This is the first new and unexpurgated translation of Meddygon Myddfai, The Physicians of Myddfai, for over 150 years. The original mediaeval manuscripts are unique, being written in Middle Welsh, whereas across England and the rest of Europe, Latin was the universal language for documents. Nicholas Culpeper's famous 17th century medical handbooks are at least five hundred years later than the genesis of the works of the Myddfai mediciners. Around 1000 Welsh remedies and suggestions for a healthy life make fascinating reading, with many being useful today. The evocative Legend of the Lady of the Lake (Llyn y Fan Fach) is included. This tale is the starting point for the line of practising Myddfai physicians from being court mediciners to Prince Rhys Gryg (d.1234) until the present day. Not only has the herbal and healing tradition carried on for around 800 years, but the places named in the legend can still be seen, and many of the plant cures have uses in modern medicine. About the Author Terry Breverton has written over forty books, with his main focus being upon Welsh history, heritage and culture. A former businessman, consultant and academic, he has worked all over the world, has given talks about Wales in Boston, Washington, Vancouver and elsewhere, and has appeared in several documentaries. He believes that books, whether in print or electronic form, have to be entertaining and informative, and hopes that this is the case with The Physicians of Myddfai.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A 400-year history of the development of alchemy in England that brings to light the evolution of the practice. In medieval and early modern Europe, the practice of alchemy promised extraordinary physical transformations. Who would not be amazed to see base metals turned into silver and gold, hard iron into soft water, and deadly poison into elixirs that could heal the human body? To defend such claims, alchemists turned to the past, scouring ancient books for evidence of a lost alchemical heritage and seeking to translate their secret language and obscure imagery into replicable, practical effects. Tracing the development of alchemy in England over four hundred years, from the beginning of the fourteenth century to the end of the seventeenth, Jennifer M. Rampling illuminates the role of alchemical reading and experimental practice in the broader context of national and scientific history. Using new manuscript sources, she shows how practitioners like George Ripley, John Dee, and Edward Kelley, as well as many previously unknown alchemists, devised new practical approaches to alchemy while seeking the support of English monarchs. By reconstructing their alchemical ideas, practices, and disputes, Rampling reveals how English alchemy was continually reinvented over the space of four centuries, resulting in changes to the science itself. In so doing, The Experimental Fire bridges the intellectual history of chemistry and the wider worlds of early modern patronage, medicine, and science.

Book excerpt: British Goblins - Welsh Folk-lore, Fairy Mythology, Legends and Traditions. British Goblins does a good job at its stated purpose - collecting and loosely categorizing Welsh Folklore of every category, ranging from the reasons behind certain customs and superstitions of daily life, to descriptions and associated stories of various faeries, goblins, and giants, to descriptions of apparitions and the view of the afterlife, to more fantastic things, like dragons, standing stones, and magic wells and stones. Although a somewhat anecdotal approach is taken, the author has in fact preserved a good deal of information that might have otherwise been lost.
