Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Physical Chemistry of the Metals There is perhaps no field Where physical chemistry is of more value than in the field of metallurgy and metallography. In the latter field - its usefulness has been recognized almost from the first but in the field, of metallurgy its application has not been so general. It is hoped that this translation may aid in making the value of chemical dynamics and equilibrium clear to the metallurgist and metallurgical student. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Metallography The study of metallic alloys by physical and miscroscopical methods has reached so great a development in recent years as to form a distinct branch of physical chemistry. In the following pages I have sought to present an account of the methods employed in this branch of study, and of the conclusions which have been reached, and also to indicate the directions in which further research is needed. The attempt has been made to discriminate, in the literature of the subject, between investigations performed with the requisite care and thoroughness, and those which, from the use of impure materials in preparing the alloys, the examination of insufficiently large quantities, or other causes, fail to reach the standard of accuracy required in physico-chemical work. The abbreviations employed in the footnotes are, in most cases, those adopted by the Chemical Society, and the remainder will, it is hoped, be self-explanatory. References to Russian periodicals are only given if the investigation has not been published in full in another language. The whole of the photo-micrographs have been prepared in the Metallurgical Laboratory of the University of Glasgow. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chemical Combination Among Metals The subject of chemical combination among metals is of considerable interest and importance in general chemistry. Viewing the recent developments of the chemistry of metals, we cannot fail to remark the immense strides made in little less than a score of years. This progress has been made possible by the rapid and incessant development of modern metallography. To give a historical picture would involve the detailed discussion of almost all the problems around which metallography is grouped. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of Inorganic Chemistry It follows from the above statement that the theoretical part of the subject is distributed throughout the book. The different topics are dealt with as Opportunity offers, but the treatment of any particular subject is postponed till facts illustrating it have been mentioned. The subject in question is then considered as fully as space permits - a mode of procedure which appears preferable to dealing with it in a fragmentary manner in different parts of the book. The latter method may usefully be employed for lectures, but the former method greatly increases the value of the book for purposes of reference and revision. As regards the order, I have also been guided to some extent by the historical development of the science. Subject to the above considerations, the more important branches of chemical theory, including the Principles of Chemical Equilibrium, the determination of Molecular Weights in Solu tion, Electrolysis and Electrolytic Dissociation, are introduced at a fairly early stage of the work, and their applications are repeatedly illustrated in the latter part of the book. The Periodic System is described after the non-metals, and serves as the basis for the discussion of the metals and their com pounds. One of the main tasks of a teacher is so to familiarize the student with a general principle that he learns to apply it with confidence. The mere statement of a principle, in the expectation that the student will straightway apply it in his later work, is useless. It will be found that the subjects usually included in an Elementary Course, such as Stage I. Of the Board of Education, are all dealt with in the early part of the book, and the more advanced work in the later chapters. Further division of the subject into stages leads inevitably to the result that information regarding any important element has to be sought for in different parts of the book, thus rendering it much less useful for purposes of reference and revision.
