Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this companion to his best-selling translation of the Bhagavad Gita, Easwaran explores the essential themes of this much-loved Indian scripture. Placing the Gita in a modern context, Easwaran shows how this classic text sheds light on the nature of reality, the illusion of separateness, the search for identity, and the meaning of yoga. The key message of the Gita is how to resolve our conflicts and live in harmony with the deep unity of life, through the principles of yoga and the practice of meditation. Easwaran grew up in the Hindu tradition and learned Sanskrit from an early age. A foremost translator and interpreter of the Gita, he taught classes on it for forty years, while living out the principles of the Gita in the midst of a busy family and community life. In the Gita, Sri Krishna, the Lord, doesn’t tell the warrior prince Arjuna what to do: he shows Arjuna his choices and then leaves it to Arjuna to decide. Easwaran, too, shows us clearly how these teachings still apply to us – and how, like Arjuna, we must take courage and act wisely if we want our world to thrive.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A humanist critique of the Gita, 'the most influential work in Indian thought'The Gita is an evolving response which deals with the conflicts between Veda and Vedanta and then with the challenge posed to Vedanta by Buddhism. Its shift to Bhakti is the climax of the battle between Brahmanism and Buddhism. There are probably multiple authors of the Gita as shown by stylistic changes and the frequent shift of subject matter. For Meghnad Desai, Gita is a secular text, a result of human creation over several centuries. He also contends that some themes in the Gita reinforce social inequality and lack of concern for the other and to that extent he finds Gita to be toxic.

Book excerpt: The Bhagavadgita is an epochal classic of Indian spirituality and universally acknowledged as one of the great books of world literature. Written as a part of the great epic Mahabharata, this intensely spiritual work is also a masterpiece of Sanskrit poetry. The theme of the Gita is the war within, the struggle for self-mastery that every human being must wage, to live a life that is meaningful, fulfilling and worthwhile. It has been translated into every major language of the world — French, Italian, Greek, Spanish, German, Japanese, Russian — and into English by several formidable scholars. Of all the English renderings of The Bhagavadgita, P. Lal’s version fully preserves the dignity and grace of the original; it performs the exceptional feat of keeping the Gita fully alive in a western language. Shorn of scholarly verbosity and sophisticated interpretations, this is a devoted work of literary beauty with moral and spiritual worth which readers will find deeply moving.

Book excerpt: Description: The Upanisads which contain lofty philosophical teachings of the great seers constitute the most authoritative sourcebook for the Vedanta system of philosophy. However, there is no unanimity among the ancient exponents of Vedanta regarding the nature of the philosophy adumbrated in the Upanisads. Dr. Chari's scholarly work attempts to make a dispassionate study of the philosophical passages of the fourteen Principal Upanisads by giving due consideration to not only the comments of Samkara, Ramanuja and Madhva, but more importantly, the authoritative views of Badarayana as enshrined in his classic Vedantasutras. In the first part of the book, he presents the important passages of the Upanisads along with English rendering indicating the variations in the interpretation by the three commentators and also discusses their philosophical implications with reference to the Vedanta doctrines developed in the post Upanisadic period. In the second part he has attempted to consolidate the variety of philosophical thoughts scattered all over the Upanisads into coherent doctrines under five broad subjects: Brahman, jivatman, jagat, sadhana, and parama-purusartha. In the final chapter he conclusively establishes on the basis of an objective evaluation of the views of the commentators that the Upanisads do not support the main tenets of Advaita such as the concept of Nirvisesa Brahman, the identity of jivatman and Brahman, the phenomenal character of the jagat and the doctrine of maya. The author maintains with sufficient textual support that the nature of the philosophy advocated by the Upanisads is Theistic Monism (savisesadvaita). This book, which is the first of its kind, presents an authentic and comprehensive exposition of the philosophy of the Upanisads.
