Book excerpt: In this book the author traces the history of America's oldest symphonic organization down to the beginning of Pierre Boulez's conductorship. Against the background of changing cultural patterns of American life over a century and a quarter, the author examines interactions between the New York Philharmonic and the society in which it functioned. There are colorful personality portraits, often tied to surprising reappraisals of such glamorous Philharmonic stars as Arturo Toscanini (who enjoined other conductors to play every note "as written," but who felt free - as the author documents - to make his own changes to the scores of the masters), Gustav Mahler, Dimitri Mitropoulos, Leopold Stokowski, Bruno Walter, and the spectacular Leonard Bernstein. The author gives the reader insight into an organization that has helped shape America's musical taste - an organization that has brought its performances to the largest audiences in the annals of symphonic music, yet has often suffered from "the vast, and largely unjustified, inferiority complex that has oppressed American music throughout its history."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A famous music critic once wrote: "the history of the New York Philharmonic is the history of music in America." In 1942, this great orchestra celebrated its hundredth anniversary, presenting a gala season under such conductors as Toscanini, Stokowski, Koussevitzky, and Walter. New York's Philharmonic is not merely the oldest orchestra in America, but one of the oldest and most famous in the world - only those of the Leipzig Gewandhaus and the Paris Conservatoire have a longer record. It seems fitting to commemorate the Philharmonic's achievement by a short history of the organization, describing the span of its progress from the first concerts given in the Apollo Rooms on lower Broadway in 1842 up to the present season, when it is heard all over the world in weekly broadcasts. The author, whose writings on music are known everywhere, has told the story in vivid and arresting fashion with many illustrations. This book is valuable evidence of the development of American musical taste during the last century.

FOR half a century the Philharmonic Society of New York has been the most conspicuous, dignified, and stable musical institution in the American metropolis. Its history embraces the whole period in which symphonic music of the highest class has been effectively cultivated by professional musicians in the United States. It is not only the oldest established orchestra in the country, but was also the first organization capable of performing a classic symphony whose members banded together for that specific purpose. As an influence in the musical development of America it occupies a place by the side of the Handel and Haydn Society of Boston. As the latter inculcated a love for choral music in its members, which, like zealous missioners, they carried into all parts of the country, so the Philharmonic Society has stimulated the organization of orchestras in the chief cities of the United States, and recruited many of them. Its concerts challenge more thoughtful attention than the doings of any musical institution in the land. They mean more. Their purpose is more earnestly, more consistently, and more singly artistic. The audiences, which gather to hear them twice a month during the period which compasses the musical season in New York City, are composed of the fine flower of the city's music lovers. They are untouched by those freaks of fashion which determine the success or failure of the. majority of popular entertainments. They are as loyal to the best interests of the art as the performers themselves, and their judgment commands the unqualified respect of the reviewers for the newspaper press.
