Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In large corporations in Japan, much of the clerical work is carried out by young women known as "office ladies" (OLs) or "flowers of the workplace." Largely nameless, OLs serve tea to the men and type and file their reports. They are exempt from the traditional lifetime employment and have few opportunities for promotion. In this engaging ethnography, Yuko Ogasawara exposes the ways that these women resist men's power, and why the men, despite their exclusive command of authority, often subject themselves to the women's control. Ogasawara, a Japanese sociologist trained in the United States, skillfully mines perceptive participant-observation analyses and numerous interviews to outline the tensions and humiliations of OL work. She details the subtle and not-so-subtle ways that OLs who are frustrated by demeaning, dead-end jobs thwart their managers and subvert the power structure to their advantage. Using gossip, outright work refusal, and public gift-giving as manipulative strategies, they can ultimately make or break the careers of the men. This intimate and absorbing analysis illustrates how the relationships between women and work, and women and men, are far more complex than the previous literature has shown.

Based on extensive original research inside a Japanese insurance company (C-Life), which subsequently went bankrupt, the book shows that attitudes towards lifetime employment, company loyalty and the other characteristics of Japanese working life, which are often portrayed in stereotype form in the West, are in fact more complicated than is at first apparent.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Japanese market is an attractive and challenging one. It is essential for foreign companies wanting to establish a growing presence to build operations which are suited to the Japanese. This book focuses on three particular areas: the labour market, the workplace and the market-place. The management of human resources plays an important part in a company’s image in the market. A strong corporate presence is vital to inspire confidence among consumers and the career opportunities and job stability offered by a company reflect its strength. Using case studies and covering topics such as the labour market, corporate organization, decision making and business transactions, this book outlines the way the Japanese organize their companies; it analyzes the approach of foreign firms and stresses the strategies they should adopt to enhance their competitive image. The comprehensive analysis of the Japanese work environment together with its focus on foreign competition will make the book essential reading for all those interested in international business, human resources, marketing and Japanese studies.

This book was released on 1989 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late 1970s, many Japanese construction companies approached their American peers in search of teaming opportunities that would enable them to enter new markets and to develop their competency in using Western project management practices. Within a decade, those same Japanese companies gained a market share equal to that held by their American competitors and established their organizations as project management experts. This article examines a study looking at the impact that Japanese personnel practices played in helping Japanese companies increase their competitiveness and expand their market reach. In doing so, it explains this study's methodology and details six Japanese personnel practices: lifetime employment, continuous training, job rotation, employee guidance, gradual promotion, and collective decision-making. It then explores the relationship between these practices and the impact--both the positive and the negative--that these practices have on the way Japanese companies practice project management, particularly in relation to career paths, internal conflicts, project control, and bidding strategies. It concludes by recommending that practitioners and researchers further study this topic to better understand the dynamics of Japanese companies and by suggesting that American organizations adopt some of the personnel practices detailed in this article.
