Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Person and Work of the Holy Spirit, as Revealed in the Scriptures and in Personal Experience It is of the highest importance from the standpoint of worship that we decide whether the Holy Spirit is a Divine Person, worthy to receive our adoration, our faith, our love, and our entire surrender to Himself, or whether it is simply an influence emanating from God or a power or an illumination that God imparts to us. If the Holy Spirit is a person, and a Divine Person, and we do not know Him as such, then we are robbing a Divine Being of the worship and the faith and the love and the surrender to Himself which are His due. Book excerpt: In this deeply spiritual and warmly evangelical book, Dr. Torrey first carefully describes who the Holy Spirit is and how one can come to know Him as a person, just as real as Jesus Christ Himself, an ever-present, loving friend and mighty helper, who is always with us. Then he goes on to describe the work of the Spirit -- in the world and in the lives of Christians. His extensive study of the baptism with the Spirit is especially timely. Few people who read this book will come away without a new understanding of the Holy Spirit and a desire for the rich blessings one can realize through Him.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Differentiated book- It has a historical context with research of the timeThe Person and Work of the Holy Spirit, by R. A. Torrey, is a Christian classic that is hard to judge. I had originally come to the book expecting to find so much to apply to my life. Initially, it was wonderful to read, and there was just so much spiritual food to get from the Biblical applications. Concepts such as I had never before considered were presented to me. Important truths that I felt shamed at not realizing. It was a wonderful time of contemplating the hidden truths (to me) of God's Word. Then, well, then the troubles began. About a third of the way through the work, the charismatic thoughts of Torrey began to surface. The unScriptural heresies that would pollute the otherwise great, God-honoring work of the Azusa Street Revival are evident in this book.I am not trying to start a theological battle with the Pentecostals and others in the Charismatic movements. I am merely pointing out that many of the pleas to feeling can be just as troubling an extreme as pure, cold logic, with no feeling. Most of the book is filled with these notions.

Book excerpt: In this classic manual of faith, Reuben Archer Torrey examines the Holy Spirit, that readers may appreciate its nature. Describing the Holy Spirit with close quotations of scripture, Torrey immerses us with clarity supported by the Biblical New Testament. We learn how the Holy Spirit is distinct from both God and Jesus Christ, how it affects the material universe and every one of our lives, and how it was an important witness to the life and doctrines of Jesus. It is the Holy Spirit that acts to set believers on a path of ridding themselves of sin. We are all Sons of God; it is by guiding us towards that sensible eventuality that the Holy Spirit works its essential good within each of our souls. It not only fulfills a role as an educator of Christians needful of faith, but supervises the baptism and informs some of the greatest prophets, saints and apostles of spiritual wisdom. R. A. Torrey was a lifelong Christian, who spent his entire working life - some fifty years - as an evangelist. His speeches, which emphasized the loving nature of God and the supreme kindness and benevolence of the divine, were popular among his congregations. He spent some years touring the United Kingdom as a lecturer, where he received a warm reception from Christian groups.

Book excerpt: Before one can correctly understand the work of the Holy Spirit, he must first of all know the Spirit Himself. A frequent source of error and fanaticism about the work of the Holy Spirit is the attempt to study and understand His work without first of all coming to know Him as a Person. It is of the highest importance from the standpoint of worship that we decide whether the Holy Spirit is a Divine Person, worthy to receive our adoration, our faith, our love, and our entire surrender to Himself, or whether it is simply an influence emanating from God or a power or an illumination that God imparts to us.
