Book Synopsis Silent Invaders by : Miriam Jacobs And Barbara Dinham
Download or read book Silent Invaders written by Miriam Jacobs And Barbara Dinham and published by Orient Blackswan. This book was released on 2004 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silent Invaders deals with the ubiquitous overuse of pesticides, which has led to unsustainable farming practices, imperiling the health of workers, consumers and the environment. The effects of these legal toxic products are studied from the perspective of women, as in some countries, particularly in the South, women make up 85 per cent or more of pesticide applicators. The volume covers a broad range of issues, from health to the need for regulation, to action that has been taken so far. It contains thirty-two essays written by authors from many nations, including India, and covers topics such as the Union Carbide gas leak at Bhopal twenty years ago (essay 29). The issue of pesticides is of particular interest at the moment due to the Centre for Science and Environment s reports on the presence of pesticide in mineral water and soft drinks.
Download or read book Pesticides written by Marvin J. Levine and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2007-03-30 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pesticide exposure has long been a cause for concern, and with good reason. Studies have shown that all persons, but especially children, pregnant women, farmers, farmworkers, and the elderly, may experience negative health effects from pesticide exposure. These effects may include acute poisoning, cancer, neurological damage, birth defects, reduced sperm count, suppressed immune systems, and reproductive and developmental harm. This book is a comprehensive examination of pesticide use, pesticide harm, and alternatives to harmful pesticides. Levine highlights the role of farming, because a substantial majority—70 percent or more annually—of pesticides are applied in agricultural uses, thereby making their way into the food chain and into the water supply. More than 20 types of pesticides have been detected in U.S. groundwater, and it is believed that nearly 100 have the potential to invade our municipal water systems. Some level of pesticide contamination has been detected in every state, in both urban and agricultural areas. Outside of agriculture, people are exposed to pesticides primarily in the home. Approximately 90 percent of all households in the nation use pesticides, and the number and concentration of these agents indoors has been shown to be greater than outdoors. Given that Americans now spend nearly 90 percent of each day indoors, this is an issue of real concern. In addition to homes, suburban and rural corporate parks are also affected. Schools are another worrisome venue. In too many of our 110,000 school districts, untrained persons are making critical decisions about the use of pesticides in school buildings and on school grounds. No other book currently examines this issue in such breadth and depth.
Download or read book Daily Poison written by Johann G. Zaller and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-28 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a sound science report about the consequences of pesticides to nature, health and environment. The book shares essential insights into the use of pesticides in agriculture, discusses the politics, rhetoric and profits involved, addresses the potential health and ecological risks of pesticides in our daily lives, and debates possible solutions. Does sustainable agriculture exist, and is agriculture without pesticides possible at all? Moreover, the author gives insight into his scientific work, the set-up of the experiments, and also writes about his very own experiences with the media and press after publication of his studies. For many years, Johann G. Zaller, an ecologist at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna, and his team, have been researching applied chemicals and their effects on the environment. Their findings, together with relevant literature and media reports, are presented in this book, which offers a unique resource for anyone who wants to know the nature and background of pesticides and how we come into contact with them in our daily lives. Book Synopsis The Pesticide Detox by : Jules N. Pretty
Download or read book The Pesticide Detox written by Jules N. Pretty and published by Earthscan. This book was released on 2012-07-26 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1960s, the world's population has more than doubled and agricultural production per person has increased by a third. Yet this growth in production has masked enormous hidden costs arising from widespread pesticide use - massive ecological damage and high incidences of farmer poisoning and chronic health effects. Whereas once the risks involved with pesticide use were judged to be outweighed by the potential benefits, increasingly the external costs of pesticides, to environments and human health, are being seen as unacceptable. In response to this trend, recent years have seen millions of farmers in communities around the world reduce their use of harmful pesticides and develop cheaper and safer alternatives. The Pesticide Detox explores the potential for the phasing-out of hazardous pesticides and the phasing-in of cost effective alternatives already available on the market. This book makes clear that it is time to start the pesticide detox and to move towards a more sustainable agriculture.
