As Lucy struggles to understand her new abilities through scientific experimentation, she is thrust into a centuries old battle between rival alchemical societies. Book excerpt: "Covering 825,000 acres in the Coastal Plain and Brush Country of South Texas, King Ranch, established in 1853, looms large in Texas and American history. Since its founding by the energetic and visionary Richard King, it has indelibly captured for generations the essence of the American West. As Tom Lea asserted in his epic 1953 history, the spirit of the place "is alive in the land itself, in the far quietness of growing grass and grazing herds." In King Ranch: A Legacy in Art, editors Bob Kinnan, William E. Reaves, and Linda J. Reaves have assembled a team of collaborators to present a beautiful, informative account of the ranch and its place in the artistic heritage of the region. Pairing original paintings by artist Noe Perez with insightful essays from curators Bruce Shackelford and Ron Tyler, this book celebrates the many ways 'King Ranch culture' has enriched appreciation for the decorative, practical, and fine arts in Texas and the greater American West. Opening with a foreword by Jamey Clement, current chair of the board for King Ranch, Inc., and continuing with a brief introduction to the ranch's history by Bob Kinnan, King Ranch: A Legacy in Art will heighten appreciation of the natural beauty and artistic influence of this legendary place. BOB KINNAN previously managed the Santa Gertrudis Heritage Society and King Ranch Archives and has been King Ranch Historian since 2016. WILLIAM E. REAVES is the author of Texas Art and a Wildcatter's Dream, coauthor for Of Texas Rivers and Texas Art, and coeditor of Sense of Home: The Art of Richard Stout. LINDA J. REAVES is coeditor of Sense of Home: The Art of Richard Stout and coauthor of A Book Maker's Art: The Bond of Arts and Letters at Texas A&M University Press"--

Book excerpt: A Smile of Hope is about a mother's love knowing no boundaries for her son, AJ Perez, who meets an untimely and sudden passing. Marivic Perez yearned for the opportunity to say goodbye to her son, and through her faith, her wishes are granted in special ways. Until they meet again, Marivic and her family continues to work in continuing AJ's legacy of inspirational hope. One does not need to know who AJ Perez was to want to read A Smile of Hope. A big take away from the book is; although we are all born into various "economic status," we are also born "equally gifted with some kind of talent and true potential." It is up to us individuals to recognize our gifted talent and to nurture and take care of its maximum potential with a kind heart, perseverance and humility. At a very young age, AJ was provided an opportunity to be in show business. He recognized he had the gift to entertain through his acting, dancing and singing. He made millions of fans very happy. He appreciated his gifts. He worked hard to always improve his craft. He was always grateful for his family, friends, colleagues and God. He knew the value of time and being present. He recognized the importance of goal setting and never giving up. He lived with purpose like there was no tomorrow.AJ's life of eighteen years may be considered very short by many. A Smile of Hope will convey it otherwise as perfectly timed with an abundance of blessings; and way before he was born, a life that was predestined and written in the stars.

His talents graced the super hero action of MARVEL TWO-IN-ONE, the martial-arts mayhem of DEADLY HANDS OF KUNG FU and the monster madness of Man-Wolf in CREATURES ON THE LOOSE! Years later, Pérez demonstrated his cosmic grandeur by wiping out half the Marvel Universe along with Thanos in INFINITY GAUNTLET! Nobody can draw an army of heroes in a single image better than George Pérez can!

Book excerpt: For the first time, music legend Rudy Pérez shares his remarkable journey from a poor refugee kid in Miami to composing the greatest hit songs on the world stage. Named the most successful Latin songwriter in history, Rudy Pérez is the creator behind some of the bestselling records of Beyoncé, Julio Iglesias, Christina Aguilera, and IL Divo. In his one-of-a-kind memoir, Rudy tells about his childhood in Cuba and the heart-gripping visits to his father in prison during the height of the communist revolution. Tracing his family's perilous escape on one of the last Freedom Flights to America, Rudy opens up about the years of poverty and growing up in a crime-ridden neighborhood. These memories contrast with tender moments of dancing to the stereo with his siblings, nodding along to his mother's classical favorites, and swaying to blues melodies with his father. At a young age, Rudy tried his hand at recreating the music he loved, and his talent led him to an unprecedented career with over 300 hit songs. With years of hard work, ceaseless creativity, and a strong faith, Rudy was the first Latin music artist to win Billboard Producer of the Decade. Looking back over his five-time Grammy winning legacy, Rudy shares little-known stories of faith and behind-the-scenes details of working with stars like Fergie, Jaci Velasquez, Michael Bolton, Simon Cowell, and Sam Moore. A must-read for every music lover, The Latin Hit Maker is a genuine rags-to-riches story filled with inspiration, fascinating details, and a powerful reminder of God's grace and transforming creativity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collecting the perspectives of scholars who reflect on their own relationships to particular garments, analyze the politics of dress, and examine the role of consumerism and entrepreneurialism in the production of creating and selling a style, meXicana Fashions examines and searches for meaning in these visible, performative aspects of identity. Focusing primarily on Chicanas but also considering trends connected to other Latin American communities, the authors highlight specific constituencies that are defined by region (“Tejana style,” “L.A. style”), age group (“homie,” “chola”), and social class (marked by haute couture labels such as Carolina Herrera and Oscar de la Renta). The essays acknowledge the complex layers of these styles, which are not mutually exclusive but instead reflect a range of intersections in occupation, origin, personality, sexuality, and fads. Other elements include urban indigenous fashion shows, the shifting quinceañera market, “walking altars” on the Days of the Dead, plus-size clothing, huipiles in the workplace, and dressing in drag. Together, these chapters illuminate the full array of messages woven into a vibrant social fabric.

Book excerpt: An outpouring of memorial tributes and public expressions of grief followed the death of the Tejana recording artist Selena Quintanilla Pérez in 1995. The Latina superstar was remembered and mourned in documentaries, magazines, websites, monuments, biographies, murals, look-alike contests, musicals, drag shows, and more. Deborah Paredez explores the significance and broader meanings of this posthumous celebration of Selena, which she labels “Selenidad.” She considers the performer’s career and emergence as an icon within the political and cultural transformations in the United States during the 1990s, a decade that witnessed a “Latin explosion” in culture and commerce alongside a resurgence of anti-immigrant discourse and policy. Paredez argues that Selena’s death galvanized Latina/o efforts to publicly mourn collective tragedies (such as the murders of young women along the U.S.-Mexico border) and to envision a brighter future. At the same time, reactions to the star’s death catalyzed political jockeying for the Latino vote and corporate attempts to corner the Latino market. Foregrounding the role of performance in the politics of remembering, Paredez unravels the cultural, political, and economic dynamics at work in specific commemorations of Selena. She analyzes Selena’s final concert, the controversy surrounding the memorial erected in the star’s hometown of Corpus Christi, and the political climate that served as the backdrop to the touring musicals Selena Forever and Selena: A Musical Celebration of Life. Paredez considers what “becoming” Selena meant to the young Latinas who auditioned for the biopic Selena, released in 1997, and she surveys a range of Latina/o queer engagements with Selena, including Latina lesbian readings of the star’s death scene and queer Selena drag. Selenidad is a provocative exploration of how commemorations of Selena reflected and changed Latinidad.
