Book excerpt: This study explored perceptions of elder nursing home residents and direct care staff as to what basic needs each group perceive as most important for elder nursing home residents. Twenty long term care residents and twenty professional direct care staff were requested to prioritize fifteen predetermined resident needs. Additionally, they were asked to add any values they find important. The results were used in determining the inconsistencies which exist between what long term care residents value most and what professional direct care staff value most for the elders. Data indicated that social services and recreational therapists' perceptions to what elders in a nursing home valued most were fairly consistent to what elder participants valued most. However, the data also indicated that the nursing team which participated in the study perceived that elders placed higher value on instrumental values than elder residents who participated. It is hoped that the findings of this study will assist social workers and other members of the multidisciplinary team in better meeting the needs valued most important by elder residents.
