Of all the senses, vision is the one relied on most heavily by most people for sensory input about the environment. Visual interactions can be divided into three processes: (1) de tection of visual information; (2) recognition of the "external source" of the information; and (3) interpretation of the significance of the information. These processes usually occur sequentially, although there is considerable interdependence among them. With our strong dependence on the processes of visual interactions, we might assume that they are well characterized and understood. Nothing could be further from the truth. Human vision remains an engima, in spite of specu lations by philosophers for centuries, and, more recently, of attention from physicists and cognitive and experimental psychologists. How we see, and how we know what we see, remains an unsolved mystery that challenges some of the most creative scientists and cognitive specialists.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the experiment was to study the influence of otolith and nonotolith information in the perception of the visual horizontal during rotation. Five normal men and five men with defective labyrinthine function acted as observers. All measurements were made in a room which could be rotated. Initial, static measurements were made while the men stood erect in the stationary room. Similar measurements were made during rotation while the observer stood on a platform set to the resultant horizontal with head and body aligned with resultant force. Data were also obtained with three other combinations of head and body position. This procedure was designed to produce two situations for the normal men in which otolith and nonotolith information were synergistic and three others in which they were antagonistic. The results showed that the perception of the visual horizontal during rotation in this situation is quite different from that found when the observer is rigidly supported in a chair during rotation. Settings to the visual horizontal during rotation were not systematically related to differences in head and body position nor were there significant differences between the normal and L-D men. The results show that nonotolith information predominates in this experimental situation. Furthermore, the data suggest that the spatial orientation of a pilot strapped in a cockpit may be somewhat different from his spatial orientation when he is standing on a rotating space platform. Book excerpt: Perception of the visual horizontal by observers in five different combinations of head and body position was studied to determine the effect of 20-degree body tilts. Both normal and labyrinthine-defective observers made five settings to the visual horizontal for each condition using a goggle device which presented a collimated line of light to the right eye while the other eye was covered. The results showed no significant constant errors in the settings by either group, and it is suggested that the absence of the E-phenomenon was due primarily to adequate contact cues and kinesthetic cues. The data also makes it clear that vestibular information is not required for veridical perception of the visual horizontal under these experimental conditions. (Author).

Book excerpt: When a man is accelerated on a centrifuge, the direction of gravitoinertial vertical changes relative to his body. However, a lag occurs in his perception of this change. The hypothesis has been advanced that the perceptual lag in this situation is partly the result of a conflict between signals arising from the semicircular canals and from the otolith organs. To test this hypothesis, subjects were tilted in such a way that they received consistent semicircular canal and otolith signals. This was accomplished simply by tilting them 30 deg from upright in their frontal plane. Immediately after being tilted, these subjects made estimates of the vertical which were approximately accurate, and they continued to make accurate estimates throughout a 140-sec judgment period. The absence of a perceptual lag under these circumstances supports the hypothesis. (Author).

Volume 1 reviews sensory coding, psychophysical and analytic procedures, and basic visual mechanisms. Volume 2 reviews stereoscopic vision. Volume 3 reviews all mechanisms of depth perception other than stereoscopic vision. The three volumes are extensively illustrated and referenced and provide the most detailed review of all aspects of perceiving the three-dimensional world. Volume 3 addresses all depth-perception mechanisms other than stereopsis. The book starts with an account of monocular cues to depth, including accommodation, vergence eye movements, perspective, interposition, shading, and motion parallax. A chapter on constancies in depth perception, such as the ability to perceive the sizes and shapes of objects as they move or rotate in depth, is followed by a chapter on the ways in which depth cues interact. The next chapter reviews sources of information, such as changing disparity, image looming, and vergence eye movements, used in the perception of objects moving in depth. Various pathologies of depth perception, including visual neglect, stereoanomalies, and albanism are reviewed. Visual depth-perception mechanisms through the animal kingdom are described, starting with insects and progressing through crustaceans, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. The chapter includes a discussion of how stereoscopic vision may have evolved. The next chapter describes how visual depth perception is used to guide reaching movements of the hand, avoiding obstacles, and walking to a distant object. The next three chapters review non-visual mechanisms of depth perception. Some fish emit electric discharges and then use electric sense organs to detect distortions of the electric field produced by nearby objects. Ants find their way back to the nest by using landmarks and by integrating their walking movements. Several animals navigate by the stars or by polarized sunlight.
