Book excerpt: Dating violence has been identified as a serious public health problem among adolescents and emerging adults. Recently, there has been an increase in research focused on identifying risk and protective factors for dating violence across the individual-, relationship-, community-, and societal-levels, yet studies exploring associations between parent-child relationships and dating violence have been lacking. The present study examined the associations between the perceived quality of mother-child relationships and father-child relationships and dating violence victimization and perpetration experiences among a sample of emerging adults. A cross-sectional sample of 454 undergraduate men and women from three universities were assessed at one time point via an online survey that employed empirically valid and reliable measures of parent-child relationship quality and past year dating violence experiences. Structural equation modeling was used to explore the relationship between these variables and included gender, country of birth, and sexual orientation as covariates in the models. Results indicated that individuals who reported higher quality relationships with their mothers and fathers had fewer victimization and perpetration experiences. There were significant differences on dating violence perpetration experiences by gender, with women reporting higher means for psychological aggression only. Individuals born in the USA reported higher victimization and perpetration experiences, specifically psychological aggression and physical assault, than those who identified as foreign-born. Similar trends were found for those who identified with a sexual orientation other than heterosexual. Differences in dating violence experiences between subgroups are explained in detail. Limitations as well as implications for future research and clinical practice are discussed.

A number of articles examine the common effects of victimization across various forms of family violence and abuse. A third common theme of the papers is an expansion of research efforts to groups other than victims of family violence and abuse, as there are chapters that examine the individual and social characteristics of male perpetrators of both wife abuse and child abuse as well as chapters that focus on the attitudes and behaviors of professional groups concerned with the treatment of victims of family violence and abuse. The volume shows great methodological diversity and attention to theoretical detail; the research presented reveals the possibility of a more comprehensive social science approach to the study of family violence and abuse. In work related to theory building, one chapter explains a number of findings in the child abuse and neglect literature using propositions derived from evolutionary biology; another paper distills propositions from several theoretical traditions. Book excerpt: Parental partner-violence (PPV) is any type of physical, emotional/psychological, or sexual violence perpetrated by at least one parent against a partner in an intimate relationship. According to the U.S. Department of Justice (2011), 25.6% of children have witnessed PPV at some time in their lives, and 11.1% had witnessed PPV in the previous year. It is a goal of this study to add to the field of feminism in a manner that provides information about adult children's experiences with witnessing PPV, how they maintain relationships with partner violent parents, and how they perceive romantic relationships. A nationally representative sample of 452 emerging adults (ages 18-25) completed a Qualtrics online survey. Participants responded to survey questions regarding their relationships with their mothers and fathers, perceptions of romantic relationships, and exposure to parental-partner violence. Overall, 73.5% of participants reported conflict and violence perpetrated by fathers, while 96.9% of participants reported conflict and violence perpetrated by mothers. Exposure to father's violence and mother's violence is associated with relationship quality for both mothers and fathers, as well as perceptions of intimate relationships. These results indicate a need to provide resources to adult children who have been exposed to parental-partner violence. This study was funded by the 2015 Jessie Bernard Outstanding Research Proposal Award from the Feminism and Family Studies Section of the National Council on Family Relations.

This report evaluates the current landscape of theory, research, and interventions addressing the role of adolescent romantic relationships in the development of healthy adult marriages. Drawing on a thorough review of the existing theoretical and empirical literature in this area, as well as interviews with practitioners directly involved with developing or administering relationship education to adolescents, the authors bring together relevant research and theory from a wide range of disciplines that have examined these issues, and suggest future directions for research and intervention. In particular, they note that although research describing romantic relationships in low-income populations is sparse, there are already-existing nationally representative data sets that include data from substantial numbers of well-sampled low-income adolescents. Analyses of these data would have relatively low cost and a potentially high yield for informing policies that target low-income youth.
