Book Synopsis Hindu Mission, Christian Mission by : Reid B. Locklin
Download or read book Hindu Mission, Christian Mission written by Reid B. Locklin and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2024-05-01 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For some four hundred years, Hindus and Christians have been engaged in a public controversy about conversion and missionary proselytization, especially in India and the Hindu diaspora. Hindu Mission, Christian Mission reframes this controversy by shifting attention from "conversion" to a wider, interreligious study of "mission" as a category of thought and practice. Comparative theologian Reid B. Locklin traces the emergence of the nondualist Hindu teaching of Advaita Vedānta as a missionary tradition, from the eighth century to the present day, and draws this tradition into dialogue with contemporary proposals in Christian missiology. As a descriptive study of the Chinmaya Mission, the Ramakrishna Mission, and other leading Advaita mission movements, Hindu Mission, Christian Mission contributes to a growing body of scholarship on transnational Hinduism. As a speculative work of Christian comparative theology, it develops key themes from this engagement for a new, interreligious theology of mission and conversion for the twenty-first century and beyond.
Book Synopsis Faith Movements and Social Transformation by : Samta P. Pandya
Download or read book Faith Movements and Social Transformation written by Samta P. Pandya and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-12-11 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the role of Hindu-inspired faith movements (HIFMs) in contemporary India as actors in social transformation. It further situates these movements in the context of the global political economy where such movements cross national boundaries to locate believers among the Hindu diaspora and others. In contemporary neoliberal India, HIFMs have become important actors, and they realize themselves by making public assertions through service. The four pillars of the contemporary presence of such movements are: gurus, sociality, hegemony and social transformation. Gurus, who spearhead these movements, create a matrix of possible meanings in their public discourses which their followers pick up to create messages of personal and social change. Sociality is a core strategy of proliferation across such movements and implies social service, which is qualified by memories of the guru and what they are believed to embody. Hegemony is reflected in the fact that social service in such movements often ominously imbibes right-wing or far-right Hinduism. They propose a model of Hindu-inspired social transformation, involving faith building into and transforming the civil society. The book discusses in a nuanced way several Hindu-inspired faith movements of various hues which have made national and international impact. This topical book is of interest to students and researchers in the fields of sociology, anthropology, social work, and social psychology, with a special interest in the study of religious movements.

Advaita has a guru-disciple tradition stretching back for several thousand years and can guarantee the sincere seeker a progressive path to self-realization. A 21st Century treatment of this ancient eastern philosophy, this book addresses all of the issues that are covered by both traditional teachers from the lineage of Shankara and by modern satsang teaching and Direct Path methods stemming from Ramana Maharshi and Krishna Menon. Topics are explained in an accessible and readable manner, using amusing quotations and stories along with an abundance of metaphors from a wide variety of sources.
Book Synopsis A Flight of Delight by : Jyotikar K PATTNI
Download or read book A Flight of Delight written by Jyotikar K PATTNI and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2006-05-01 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Flight of Delight is a work of experiential philosophical text that contemplates the nature of such subtle topics as Karmic evolution, Divine Cosmic Truth, and the relationship between Divinity and Humankind. Utilising an expressive narrative approach that places emphasis on description and aesthetics finely, the author has endeavoured to render a thought provoking analysis in a prose poetic style. The fine text touches the core concepts of theology that look at life as a freely flowing channel of energies in profound human experiences. One of the central ideas of the work is the difference between institutional religion and experiential philosophy, with the conceptual emphasis leaning toward the latter. Fear destroys true faith. Institutional religion is constrictive that remains fixated on rules, systems, and political bureaucracies. A profound human spiritualism on the other hand suggests a cyclical direction of energy that flows without fear, suppression, oppression, exploitation, manipulation, and falsity. Realising and understanding compassion and love is much more important and significant than following set of doctrines in conflict. This is attainable in spiritual evolution - a self-discovery in profound experiences without the confines of specific creed, cast, or race. The discourse includes detailed explorations of different types of Vedic yoga's, mantras, and consciousness. The emphasis placed on the pursuit of divine wisdom and divinity incorporates all of these elements to form a comprehensive insight of profound experience for the inner well-ness and peace. The reader of 'A Flight of Delight' may also benefit from the organised structure afforded to the text. The detailed explanation of the experiential theories familiarises the reader with carefully distilled notions of spiritualism and divinity. Here is an extra ordinary work of self-healing texts from a very special person who has journeyed through adversities himself. The lyrics of this book are particularly special because the author writes from the depth of his heart, to express in the profoundest sense, the relevance of the ancient Vedic Wisdom to the hectic modern world. The mind enriching lyrics bring to us a re-awakening of beautiful divinity filled with solace, hope, and compassionate love. Life oh life! Let it be 'a flight of delight'.

Book Synopsis Hamlet and Arjuna: Heroes of a Feather by : Dr. Salia Rex
Download or read book Hamlet and Arjuna: Heroes of a Feather written by Dr. Salia Rex and published by Partridge Publishing. This book was released on 2017-11-17 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The enigmatic psyche of Hamlet, the prince of Denmark has raised myriad critical opinions, which see him as an indecisive hero, a lunatic, misogynist and a philosopher who failed as a son, lover and prince, leading a life of incest shadowed by inferiority complex and paranoia. The result is the son becoming the bane of his family. The book takes a fresh look at Hamlet, the hero, from a novel angle in the light of the philosophy of the Bhagavadgita, and projects him as a hero who fights many a battle in his mind against his own gunas until he gets refined as a Trigunatita. A glance at Hamlet criticism provides a kaleidoscopic view of the extensive critical readings on Hamlet ever since the text was published. This work captivates converging and diverging elements of the two masterpieces. In Hamlet and Arjuna: Birds of a Feather, Dr. Salia Rex analyses the psyche and actions of Hamlet, the tragic hero of William Shakespeare, and Arjuna, the mythological hero of Veda Vyasa, to unearth their converging elements and quintessential uniqueness as heroes.
