Introduction: It was inevitable that the energy of the Church in intellectually realizing and defining its doctrines in relation to one another, should first be directed towards the objective side of Christian truth. The chief controversies of the first four centuries and the resulting definitions of doctrine, concerned the nature of God and the person of Christ; and it was not until these theological and Christological questions were well upon their way to final settlement, that the Church could turn its attention to the more subjective side of truth. Meanwhile she bore in her bosom a full recognition, side by side, of the freedom of the will, the evil consequences of the fall, and the necessity of divine grace for salvation. Individual writers, or even the several sections of the Church, might exhibit a tendency to throw emphasis on one or another of the elements that made up this deposit of faith that was the common inheritance of all. The East, for instance, laid especial stress on free will: and the West dwelt more pointedly on the ruin of the human race and the absolute need of God's grace for salvation. But neither did the Eastern theologians forget the universal sinfulness and need of redemption, or the necessity, for the realization of that redemption, of God's gracious influences; nor did those of the West deny the self-determination or accountability of men. All the elements of the composite doctrine of man were everywhere confessed; but they were variously emphasized, according to the temper of the writers or the controversial demands of the times. Such a state of affairs, however, was an invitation to heresy, and a prophecy of controversy; just as the simultaneous confession of the unity of God and the Deity of Christ, or of the Deity and the humanity of Christ, inevitably carried in its train a series of heresies and controversies, until the definitions of the doctrines of the Trinity and of the person of Christ were complete. In like manner, it was inevitable that sooner or later some one should arise who would so one-sidedly emphasize one element or the other of the Church's teaching as to salvation, as to throw himself into heresy, and drive the Church, through controversy with him, into a precise definition of the doctrines of free will and grace in their mutual relations.

This study focuses on Augustine's understanding of the humanity of Christ, as it emerged in dialogue with his anti-Pelagian conception of human freedom and Original Sin. By reinterpreting the Pelagian controversy as a Western continuation of the Origenist controversy before it, Dominic Keech argues that Augustine's reading of Origen lay at the heart of his Christological response to Pelagianism. Augustine is therefore situated within the network of fourth and fifth century Western theologians concerned to defend Origen against accusations of Platonic error and dangerous heresy. Opening with a survey of scholarship on Augustine's Christology and anti-Pelagian theology, Keech proceeds by redrawing the narrative of Augustine's engagement with the issues and personalities involved in the Origenist and Pelagian controversies. He highlights the predominant motif of Augustine's anti-Pelagian Christology: the humanity of Christ, 'in the likeness of sinful flesh' (Rom. 8.3), and argues that this is elaborated through a series of receptions from the work of Ambrose and Origen. The theological problems raised by this Christology - in a Christ who is exempt from sin in a way which unbalances his human nature - are explored by examining Augustine's understanding of Apollinarianism, and his equivocal statements on the origin of the human soul. This forms the backdrop for the book's speculative conclusion, that the inconsistencies in Augustine's Christology can be explained by placing it in an Origenian framework, in which the soul of Christ remains sinless in the Incarnation because of its relationship to the eternal Word, after the fall of souls to embodiment.

Book excerpt: In consequence of a paradigm shift in the study of ancient Christian doctrinal controversies that was pioneered by Walter Bauer and elaborated by Alain Le Boulluec, most contemporary scholars of ancient Christianity have agreed that the construction of orthodoxy was accompanied by and indeed entailed the definition as heretical of positions that had been regarded as apostolic, and hence orthodox, by prior generations of Christians. This scholarly realisation has resulted in the historiographical deconstruction of ancient heresiological categories such as Gnosticism, Marcionism, and Arianism. As for Pelagianism - to the degree that we can speak of a unified doctrine or movement - scholars have argued that it developed into a coherent system of thought only in the minds of Augustine or Jerome. The deconstruction of Pelagianism as a heresiological category has led some scholars to question the validity of Pelagianism as a historiographical construct - here it will suffice to mention Ali Bonner's recent and not uncontested work, The Myth of Pelagianism. So how, then, did Christian authors who were considered pious and holy in their own day become the arch-heretics of Western Christianity? To answer this question, the present volume re-examines various facets of the so-called Pelagian controversy. In critical dialogue with standard works, specialists review the controversy's possible sources and origins; the diverse theological positions concerning Christ, grace, and (original) sin; the rhetorical and heresiological strategies employed and their long after-effects; as well as matters of textual and theological afterlife. In this way, the volume reappraises the controversy's myriad theology, rhetoric, and reception.
