Book Synopsis Pear Trees and Starlings by : Carlin Pierce
Download or read book Pear Trees and Starlings written by Carlin Pierce and published by . This book was released on 2013-07-14 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Simplicity is a trait that runs through everyone so much more than anyone knows. Nature is the epitome of simple beauty. Every time a bird sings, a shoot of joy sprouts. Every time the wind blows, someone somewhere is stronger. Aware of nature or not, people need a taste of a country road leading to a purple mountain. This is what has driven Carlin Pierce from childhood. Her family bred her to see the fluidity on the sunrays, the sparkle in the swaying leaves, and the solace, hope, and heaven in all things modest and natural. Pear Trees and Starlings brings these feelings of nature to the front of the mind, and the middle of the soul, to convey that beauty and peace can be found simply.
Download or read book All Amazed written by John O'Brian and published by arsenal pulp press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All Amazed celebrates the life and work of the late Roy Kiyooka (1926-1994), one of Canada's first multi-disciplinary artists whose work transcended categorical and cultural exclusivity. At various periods of his life, Kiyooka was a painter, sculptor, teacher, poet, musician, filmmaker, and photographer. When Kiyooka arrived in Vancouver in 1959, he was already one of Canada's most respected abstract painters. His modernist stance at the time inspired a generation of Vancouver painters to reach beyond regionalism. In the sixties and seventies, Kiyooka began to write and publish poetry and produce photographic works; the best known of these, StoneDGloves (1969-1970), is both a poetic and photographic project. In all of his projects, he saw the position of the artist as being in opposition to the institutions of art. The shape and scope of Kiyooka's work continues to be revealed, seven years after his death. Based on a major multidisciplinary conference at the University of British Columbia organized by such luminaries as Michael Ondaatje, Daphne Marlatt, Scott Watson, and John O'Brian, All Amazed pays tribute to a remarkable artist and poet who continues to amaze and astound us. Includes essays by Roy Miki, Henry Tsang, Sheryl Conkelton, and Scott Toguri McFarlane, as well as numerous black and white images of Kiyooka's artwork.

Download or read book From Cohen to Carson written by Ian Rae and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2008 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "From Cohen to Carson provides the first book-length analysis of one of Canada's most distinctive fields of literary production. Ian Rogers argues that Canadian poets have turned to the novel because of the limitations of the lyric, but have used lyric methods - puns, symbolism, repetition, juxtaposition - to create a mode of narrative that contrasts sharply with the descriptive conventions of realist and plot-driven novels." "Detailed case studies of novels by Leonard Cohen, Michael Ondaatje, George Bowering, Daphne Marlatt, and Anne Carson, as well as sections on A. M. Klein and Anne Michaels, reveal how these authors framed their early novels according to formal precedents established in their poetry. In tracking the authors' shift from lyric to long poem to novel, Rae also investigates their experiments with non-literary art forms - photography, painting, and film. He argues convincingly that the authors discussed have combined disparate genres and media to alter notions of narrative coherence in the novel and engage the diverse but fragmented cultural histories of Canadian society." --Résumé de l'éditeur.
Book Synopsis History of Literature in Canada by : Reingard M. Nischik
Download or read book History of Literature in Canada written by Reingard M. Nischik and published by Camden House. This book was released on 2008 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of literature in Canada with an eye to its multicultural, multiethnic, multilingual nature. From modest colonial beginnings, literature in Canada has arrived at the center stage of world literature. Works by English-Canadian writers -- both established writers such as Margaret Atwood and new talents such as Yann Martel -- make regular appearances on international bestseller lists. French-Canadian literature has also found its own voice in the North American and francophone worlds. "CanLit" has likewise developed into a staple of academic interest, pursued in Canadian Studies programs in Canada and around the world. This volume draws on the expertise of scholars from Canada, Germany, Austria, and France, tracing Canadian literature from the indigenous oral tradition to thedevelopment of English-Canadian and French-Canadian literature since colonial times. Conceiving of Canada as a single but multifaceted culture, it accounts for specific characteristics of English- and French-Canadian literatures, such as the vital role of the short story in English Canada or that of the chanson in French Canada. Yet special attention is also paid to Aboriginal literature and to the pronounced transcultural, ethnically diverse character ofmuch contemporary Canadian literature, thus moving clearly beyond the traditions of the two founding nations.
