Book excerpt: In Royal Umbrellas of Stone: Memory, Politics, and Public Identity in Rajput Funerary Art, Melia Belli Bose provides the first analysis of Rajput chatrīs ("umbrellas"; cenotaphs) built between the sixteenth to early-twentieth centuries. New kings constructed chatrīs for their late fathers as statements of legitimacy. During periods of political upheaval patrons introduced new forms and decorations to respond to current events and evoke a particular past. Offering detailed analyses of individual cenotaphs and engaging with art historical and epigraphic evidence, as well as ethnography and ritual, this book locates the chatrīs within their original social, political, and religious milieux. It also compares the chatrīs to other Rajput arts to understand how arts of different media targeted specific audiences.

Book excerpt: The period of the Sultanates is typically defined as beginning with the Ghurid incursions into north India in the 1190s, and ending with the coming of the Mughals in 1526. However, regional architectural traditions did continue after that, fading out only many decades later. Thirty-five sultans ruled from Delhi, and many more in the provinces, effecting the maturation of a style that progressed from an architecture of demolition and recycling to a synthesis of East and West, creating one of the finest moments of Islamic architectural history. This volume includes in-depth analyses of the architecture of the Suri dynasty, Delhi under the Tughluqs, Sindh, Narnaul, Jaunpur, Gujarat, Malwa, Bengal, and the Charminar in Hyderabad

Book excerpt: They discuss, for example, how the universal caliphs of the first six centuries gave way to regional rulers and how, in this new world order, Iranian forms, techniques, and motifs played a dominant role in the artistic life of most of the Muslim world; the one exception was the Maghrib, an area protected from the full brunt of the Mongol invasions, where traditional models continued to inspire artists and patrons. By the sixteenth century, say the authors, the eastern Mediterranean under the Ottomans and the area of northern India under the Mughals had become more powerful, and the Iranian models of early Ottoman and Mughal art gradually gave way to distinct regional and imperial styles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tale of Four Indian Cities presents a vivid picture of how the British political regime reorganized the structure of the Indian economy to suit its own objectives. While doing so, the regime also affected the geographical distribution of economic activities. This resulted in the decline of native cities and the increased prosperity of colonial cities. To reveal how British colonial power brought about such changes in the Indian subcontinents, the book narrates the account of two pairs of native and colonial cities – Dacca and Calcutta from the Indian Eastern coast, and Surat and Bombay from the Western coast. These were major centres of manufacturing, shared a common history and experienced the consequences of three different political dispensations – the Mughal Empire, the East India Company and the British Raj. Accessibly written, the volume will be of great interest to students, scholars and researchers of Indian colonial business and economic history. It will also be of interest to the general reader.

Book excerpt: This is an account of Sher Shah Suri--a man of surpassing personal excellence, a great and exemplary ruler, and the greatest leader ever produced by the Afghans. The book seeks to examine and evaluate his performance in all these capacities: to explore the pith and essence of the man and determine his place in the currents of Indian history, as well as in the independent stream of Afghan history. At his death in 1545, Sher Shah left behind an empire stretching from the Indus to the Bay of Bengal. However, Sher Shah's place in history rests not on his military exploits alone, but on the exemplary efficiency of his rule, the many far-reaching improvements that he effected in all spheres of government, and the splendid measures that he instituted for the good of the general public. This is a history of Sher Shah and the interrelatioship between India and the Afghans, and the great currents and countercurrents of events pertaining in the age. Moreover, and most significantly, its conclusions are drawn from the cardinal lessons ingrained in Indian history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the period between the 1770s and 1840s, through the process of colonial state formation, the early colonial state in India was able to harness and extract vast amounts of agrarian wealth in north India. However, little is known of the histories of the Indian scribes and the role they played in shaping the early patterns of British colonial rule. This book offers a new way of interpreting the colonial state’s origins in north India. It examines how the formation of early agrarian revenue settlements exacerbated an extant late Mughal taxation tradition, and how the success of British power was shaped by this extant paper-oriented revenue culture. It goes on to examine how the service and cultural histories of various Hindu scribal communities fit within broader changes in political administration, taxation, patterns of governance and a shared Indo-Islamic administrative culture. The author argues that British power after the late eighteenth century came as much through bureaucratic mastery, paper and taxes as it did through military force and commercial ruthlessness. The book draws upon private family papers, interviews and Persian sources to demonstrate how the fortunes of scribes changed between empires, and the important role they played at the height of the British Raj by 1900. Offering a detailed account of how agrarian wealth provided the bedrock of the colonial state’s later patterns of administration, this book is a unique and refreshing contribution to studies in South Asian History, Governance and Imperialism.
