Book excerpt: In this day and age New Caledonia can be considered a ‘rarity’ – the history of colonialism and nationalism New Caledonia is a unique case – a French colony where the native Kanak population are fighting for political self-determination. As a result of this the question of education on New Caledonia has become the basis of intense discussions and heated debates, especially in relation to the future form the education system will take if the island opts for independence from France between 2013 and 2018. The issues at stake and the possible consequences of a political change have pushed many to analyse the pros and cons of the education system at present, as well as looking at solutions to combating the problems of academic failure that has been noted among students. Against the general background of colonialism and ethno-political conflict on the island, this thesis attempts to identify how New Caledonia’s history has impacted on the present situation and how this needs to be taken into account in when drawing up future education policies, which will require imagination and a form or consensus among decision-makers. This thesis also intends to show that New Caledonia’s history and its relationship with France will also play an important role in the new education system- given that the main objective of education, besides transmitting knowledge to the next generation, is that it must benefit of the country’s population who will ultimately lead the country. The education programme of New Caledonia needs to allow all students to grow and blossom, able to find their place in society.
