Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Path of Honor: A Tale of the War in the Bocage I thanked God that we of Touraine had not yet been caught in the eddies of that maelstrom. Danton had been too busy at home to cast his eyes in our direction, and if our peasants ran away it was at least without leaving behind them blackened walls and outraged bodies. So we had lived our lives in peace, undisturbed by massacres, by the worship of Reason, Or by that grim machine which toiled so ceaselessly upon the Place de la Révolution. But as I topped a rise in the road, I saw that the instruments of war at least had at last invaded even this peaceful country. Under a tree by the roadside a group of soldiers were sitting, and it needed no second glance to tell me they were Republicans. They were lolling about, talk ing idly among themselves; only their officer was on his feet, but he was watching the road intently and the instant his eyes met mine he uttered a sharp command. In a breath his men had sprung to arms and deployed across the road. I was a peaceful-traveller, intent on my own business; so telling myself that I had nothing to fear from even the most rabid Of Revolutionists, I continued on without hesitating. It could not be for such a small and inoffensive fish as I that a net so elaborate had been spread. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Here's a unique opportunity for a Romantic Occurrence: why doesn't some one young and charming appear and pick me up 'l As if fate had overheard the challenge, there came at that moment, from behind a bend of the hills, the hoot of an approaching car. The young girl looked back, but with a doubtful aspect. Motoring people aren't nice except to other motorists, she reflected; they always might tow you up a hill, and they never do. Besides, with a disparaging glance at the road, which was little better than a cart track, the man at this wheel must be mad. As she said it, the motor swung round a corner and came into sight: a big open car in green and silver, the glare of its great lamps flaming out like searchlights. Empty except for the man who drove, it came racing up the hill at top speed, with the ease of power held in restraint, till it was abreast of the bicycle: there it halted. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Curb of Honor It did not take very long to stow away cloak-bags and lunch-baskets - trunks and portmanteaus were to follow by carrier as soon as the snow melted - yet to an Observ ant eye that brief interval might open wide fields of speculation concerning two of the travellers. The man, although evidently twice as old as his companion, was still middle-aged - had perhaps only just passed his fortieth year. He wore that premature look of age impart ed by bodily suffering and something akin to deformity and dwarfdom, yet hardly to be SO called. No accident in childhood, but innate misshapenness, was probably account able for the quite apparent yet by no means shocking curve of the shoulders and arrested growth of the lower limbs. These inherent defects and ruggedness of feature were more than counterbalanced by nobility of expres sion - a nobility striking, conspicuous, impos sible to pass by. It had been won from a royal little fellow who, in his story books, held familiar converse with those of high degree, and whose sensitive na ture and unerring instinct haddiscerned in her the true gentle woman. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Randolph Honor There was an evening that we stood beneath these very trees when these young leaves were in bud, and my Fa dette's eyes brightened and her cheek flushed, while, rais ing her hand defiantly, she cried, _ Shame upon the tramplers out of our forefathers' foot-prints on the sands of time Honor to those who tread once again and deeper in those foot-prints, until they stand upon the underlying rock.' Does She think I then proclaimed duties for others, from Which I myself shrink back? Or would let the true Ran dolph honor go, to hold fast its emblem, these old walls and acres? Heretofore business arrangements have oom pelled me to delay in Maryland, but I am now free to follow my first impulse, to join our army in Virginia.
