Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Path to Freedom The following Notes drafted by General Collins early in August and apparently intended for public utterance, probably to An Dail, were without correction by him. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Path to Freedom in the School I cannot refrain from expressing my deep gratitude to sympathizers among the leaders (explicit or implicit) of what we may very well call the movement for the emancipation of the child - to Mr. Edmond Holmes, to Professor Culverwell, to Professor John Adams, to Mr. Thiselton Mark, to Mr. G. W. S. Howson - to many members of the Montessori Committee. Without this encouragement to carry me through days rendered dark by scepticism and even by hostility, I might very well have given up my work in despair - although I did indeed have the constant sympathy and devoted zeal of my boys, to whom I dedicate this book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution and the Need of Atonement As the title indicates, the main object of this book is not to offer a new theory of the Atonement. Rather it is intended to Show that when the origin and history of man are studied from the scientific, and especially the biological side, the spiritual life, its partial failure, and the need for Atonement, far from receding into vagueness and unreality, are thrown into strong relief. Book excerpt: The Diamond Cutter Sutra is one of the most famous Buddhist books of all time; it was taught by the Buddha 25 centuries ago, and then spread throughout India, China, Tibet, Japan, and many other countries. The Chinese edition seen here is the oldest printed book in the world with a date inside. The sutra focuses on the concept of emptiness, which is a key to success and happiness in the modern world, if we get a good explanation of how to apply it at work and at home. Emptiness has been widely misunderstood though, throughout history--and there are very few clear explanations of the Diamond Cutter. Perhaps the best ever written is Sunlight on the Path to Freedom, by Choney Lama Drakpa Shedrup, a Tibetan sage who lived 1675-1748.Our first complete woodblock manuscript for this masterpiece was discovered in the Oriental Library of the Russian Academy of Sciences by staff of the Asian Classics Input Project. The translation is the first ever undertaken into English of this crucial text, and includes a wonderful summary on the idea of emptiness, and how this can be used in real life.

Book excerpt: Foreword by Irvine Welsh 'My life sentence had actually started the day I left my mother's womb...' Jimmy Boyle grew up in Glasgow’s Gorbals. All around him the world was drinking, fighting and thieving. To survive, he too had to fight and steal... Kids’ gangs led to trouble with the police. Approved schools led to Borstal, and Jimmy was on his way to a career in crime. By his twenties he was a hardened villain, sleeping with prostitutes, running shebeens and money-lending rackets. Then they nailed him for murder. The sentence was life – the brutal, degrading eternity of a broken spirit in the prisons of Peterhead and Inverness. Thankfully, Jimmy was able to turn his life around inside the prison walls and eventually released on parole. A Sense of Freedom is a searing indictment of a society that uses prison bars and brutality to destroy a man's humanity and at the same time an outstanding testament to one man's ability to survive, to find a new life, a new creativity, and a new alternative.

In the opinion of the English diplomats, when their demand that the freedom of the seas should not be brought up for the consideration of the Peace Conference, was assented to by the representatives of the United States. Astute, experienced, trained men, skilled in diplomacy, they secured for themselves before the Conference even met, that which was of the greatest value to them. They left for its consideration, only questions that, while of the utmost importance to the individual nations and peoples, counted practically for nothing, so far as the control of the world was concerned. They were confronted on the part of America by men with small knowledge of world affairs and who had little or no experience in dealing with trained diplomats. The representatives of the British Empire were secure; - were certain of their position of dominance from the outset, and could afford to look with great complacency upon the Conference, governed, so far as they were concerned, by conditions which made it impossible for them to lose. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Woman From Bondage to Freedom Naturally, a work of this kind must be abridged. When woman started from her ancient bondage for modern freedom, she hit a long trail. I shall try to blaze that trail. She has been on the way some time, but she never knew where she was going - nobody does. Progress has no ultimate goal - it can't have. It has an instinct. It is a wanderer. It passes through successive zones that are repeated. They can not be infinite in number and diversity, because being is limited in its reactions. There is not even conception of infinity. Being is necessarily provincial. It is characterized by its surroundings. Cosmic consciousness is an idea. God is hope. Immortality is a dream. Is there truth in the idea? Is there reality in the hope? Is there prophecy in the dream? No one knows. The very soul of our race is dumb, or, at best, inarticulate in its cries and vague in its longings. In the long run, progress may be like a dog chasing his tail. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insight Dialogue is a way of bringing the tranquility and insight attained in meditation directly into your interactions with other people. It’s a practice that involves interacting with a partner in a retreat setting or on your own, as a way of accessing a profound kind of insight. Then, you take that insight on into the grind of everyday human interactions. Gregory Kramer has been teaching the practice (which he originated) for more than a decade in retreats around the world. It’s something strikingly new in the world of Buddhist practice—yet it’s completely grounded in traditional Buddhist teaching. Kramer begins with a detailed presentation of the central Buddhist teaching of the Four Noble Truths seen through an interpersonal lens. Because dukkha (suffering or unsatisfactoriness) is often most forcefully felt in our relations with others, interpersonal relationships are a wonderfully useful place to practice. He breaks the Noble Truths down into component parts to observe how they manifest particularly in relationship to others, using examples from his own life and practice, as well as from his students’. He then goes on to present the practice as it’s taught in his workshops and retreats. There are a few basic steps to the practice, deceptively simple to describe: (1) pause, (2) relax, (3) open, (4) trust emergence, (5) listen deeply, and (6) speak the truth. The sequence begins following a period of meditation, and includes periods of speaking, listening, and mutual silence. Kramer includes numerous examples of people’s experience with the practice from his retreats, and shows how the insight gained from the techniques can be brought into real life. More than just testimonials for how well the practice "works," the personal stories demonstrate the problems that arise, the different routes the practice can follow, and the sometimes surprising insights that are gained.

Book excerpt: Freedoms Vector: The Path to Prosperity, Opportunity and Dignity, is a book about Americaits government, its institutions, and its people. It is about a nation blessed with the finest system of governance ever devised. It is about a country that has outgrown its institutions and is in need of reconditioning. It is about a people who have been losing their faith and are waiting for a new call to greatness. Our country can recapture the spirit of 76, if we bring our better virtues and a sense of responsibility to bear upon the task. If our leaders reform their economics. If money and power do not stand in the way of freedom and democracy. If you love America, I think you will like this book. If you read this book, I think it may surprise and educate you. It may even annoy you. If it does, and you are inspired to craft a better plan for your country, I will have achieved my purpose in putting these pages between two covers.
