Book Synopsis The Ecclesial Canopy by : Martyn Percy
Download or read book The Ecclesial Canopy written by Martyn Percy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-23 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seeking to dynamically alter the way that theologians, ecclesiologists, students of religion and ministers look at the relationship between church and society, this book takes religion, politics and society as basic categories and explores how oft-overlooked issues are in fact highly significant for the shaping of theological and ecclesiological horizons. The Ecclesial Canopy is not, however, simply about reading meanings into religion, politics and society. Rather, it sets out to faithfully interpret much of the material that surrounds us, yet is often taken for granted or unnoticed. Paying close and patient attention to beliefs, language, artefacts, rituals, practices and other material - all of which are constitutive for ecclesial life and theological identity - this book offers an invitation of engagement to the scholar or minister. The Ecclesial Canopy makes a significant and important contribution to the field of pastoral and practical theology. Building on the concepts of implicit and invisible religion, Martyn Percy offers a fresh and original interpretative 'take' on contemporary society, appealing to clergy, laity, scholars and all those working in the field of theory and reflective practice in practical and pastoral theology.
Book Synopsis Catholic Approaches in Practical Theology by : Claire E. Wolfteich
Download or read book Catholic Approaches in Practical Theology written by Claire E. Wolfteich and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Practical theology is an established discipline in the theological curriculum at both Protestant and Catholic European universities. And yet, despite the recent proliferation of English-language scholarly resources in practical theology, there are few explicitly Catholic resources or collections in practical theology. This book provides a view of Catholic practical theological scholarship across different international contexts, including Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Belgium, Canada, India, Croatia, Nigeria, Mexico, the United States, Australia, and the Philippines. Contributions encompass a variety of disciplines, methods, research foci, and communicative styles. Chapters address intersections, for example, between practical theology and moral theology, missiology, liturgical/sacramental theology, pastoral psychology, empirical theology, ecclesiology, education, poetics, and spirituality studies. The volume engages theoretical meta-questions (such as the relationship between practical theology, 'lived religion', and empirical theology) and a range of urgent concrete issues (such as clerical sexual violence, religion and violence or gender issues). This volume thus makes a needed contribution to the wider discipline of practical theology and to Catholic theology as it seeks to stimulate further discussion and research among practical theologians and scholars in other related disciplines, both within the Catholic context and within other academic and ecclesial contexts.

Book excerpt: This book is the first systematic discussion of the theological contribution of John Chrysostom, a seminal figure in the Christian homiletical tradition. His ministry in the late fourth and early fifth centuries marked him as the leading Greek expositor of the Patristic period. This book develops the basic motifs of Chrysostom's thought and gives an overview of the entire range of his contribution. Chrysostom's theology of pastoral ministry, the Christian life, sexual relations, and Church and state receive particular attention. This book will be of interest to all students of the Christian ministry, the Patristic period and the history of Christian theology.

Book Synopsis A Perichoretic Pastoral Theology by : Jim Horsthuis
Download or read book A Perichoretic Pastoral Theology written by Jim Horsthuis and published by Explorations in Practical, Pastoral and Empirical Theology. This book was released on 2022-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book articulates a perichoretic pastoral theology, offering a pastoral theological response to the question of how ministering persons practice ministry in communion with the triune God. Key elements from contemporary pastoral theology--theologies of human experience, concern for human suffering, and situational attentiveness--are drawn into conversation with the doctrine of perichoresis. Jim Horsthuis provides a vision for life and ministry in relational, participational and spiritual communion with the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The chapters explore four spiritual movements that foster this vision: (1) the move from experience to relationship; (2) the move from concern to presence; (3) the move from competence to communion; and (4) the move from practice to prayer. The book represents a unique academic contribution to both pastoral theology and Trinitarian theology.
Book Synopsis Catholic Practical Theology by : Bob Pennington
Download or read book Catholic Practical Theology written by Bob Pennington and published by . This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY, the Catholic Church made an epoch-defining magisterial, philosophical, and theological turn from an "ahistorical" methodological "habitus" toward a praxis-based methodology that interprets "historical reality," especially the reality of the poverty, as a locus theologicus. This book shows how the development of this turn began in pre-conciliar Western Europe, next flourished during the pontificates of John XXIII and Paul VI and at Vatican Council II, then became vital to liberation theology in post-conciliar Latin America, and eventually grew into the contemporary paradigm of "practical theology." The book chronicles the contributions of a range of twentieth-century Catholic philosophers, theologians, and members of the Magisterium who created and advanced this turn across Western Europe, Latin America, and North America. Today, the turn has been additionally developed in Africa and Asia, and the author looks forward to learning from additional Catholic theological voices from those important global regions. DR. BOB PENNINGTON, a native of West Virginia, grew up in Gainesville, Florida and attended the University of Florida in pursuit of a bachelor's degree in Political Science. However, after a mission-trip to the isolated mountain town of La Cucarita in the Dominican Republic, Dr. Pennington transferred to Wheeling Jesuit University to finish his undergraduate degree with a focus on the political and civic aspect of mission work. Dr. Pennington then earned a master's degree in Theology from Xavier University, followed by a Ph.D. in Practical Theology from St. Thomas University in Miami, Florida. Dr. Pennington is currently an Assistant Professor of Religious Studies, specializing in Ethics, at Mount St. Joseph University. When not working on writing and speaking projects, he enjoys spending time with his wife Cassandra, and with his two children Luke and Leo.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Merton (1915-1968) is considered to be one of the most important Catholic American authors of the twentieth century. In this book one can discover Merton not only as a contemplative writer and prophet, but also as a pastoral practitioner. Dominiek Lootens is a Catholic practical theologian with more than twenty years of experience as a pastoral supervisor and educator in Belgium and Germany. Using his own professional practice as a starting point, he reflects in this book on the life and work of Thomas Merton. He shows how relevant Merton can be for pastoral practitioners who are active in today's global context. A variety of professional topics are discussed: interfaith hospital chaplaincy, migration and practical theology, pastoral supervision and spirituality, natural contemplation and Orthodox pastoral theology, racism and adult education, and the training of chaplains as social justice allies. This book offers practical theologians and pastoral practitioners an in-depth view in the life and publications of Thomas Merton and invites them to bring it into dialogue with their own professional practice.

Book Synopsis The Years of Jesuit Suppression, 1773–1814: Survival, Setbacks, and Transformation by : Paul Shore
Download or read book The Years of Jesuit Suppression, 1773–1814: Survival, Setbacks, and Transformation written by Paul Shore and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-12-30 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The forty-one years between the Society of Jesus’s papal suppression in 1773 and its eventual restoration in 1814 remain controversial, with new research and interpretations continually appearing. Shore’s narrative approaches these years, and the period preceding the suppression, from a new perspective that covers individuals not usually discussed in works dealing with this topic. As well as examining the contributions of former Jesuits to fields as diverse as ethnology—a term and concept pioneered by an ex-Jesuit—and library science, where Jesuits and ex-Jesuits laid the groundwork for the great advances of the nineteenth century, the essay also explores the period the exiled Society spent in the Russian Empire. It concludes with a discussion of the Society’s restoration in the broader context of world history.
