Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Passing of the Shereefian Empire This book is intended as a record of events in Morocco during the past two years as they have come under my personal observation. This period has been perhaps the most momentous and critical in the history of the country, and from it will surely date the decline of Morocco's independence. I was present during the early part of the French campaign in the Chaouia, and was one of the very first to go to Fez, and to meet Moulai el Hafid after his successful advance on the capital from Morocco city. I lived for some months on most intimate terms with the Sultan, before he was acknowledged by the Powers, at a time when he could be approached with a facility now no longer possible, and I had many opportunities of forming an estimate of his character and abilities. As an instructive contrast, I was also brought into contact with Abdul Aziz during the closing months of his troubled reign. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alexander's Empire The story of the conquests of Alexander has been told many times, and his name is familiar in our mouths as household words; but the history of the different portions of the great Empire that he founded, how they rapidly gained and lost their independence, and finally were absorbed into the dominions of Rome, is by no means equally well known. It was not to be expected that such a conqueror as the great Macedonian should leave behind him any single successor equal to the task of holding his vast Empire together, and it is therefore no matter of surprise that it was speedily broken up; but there is, nevertheless, a deep interest in tracing the progress of disintegration, in the course of which one ruler after another was obliged to resign his power, and the inner life of the world was completely transformed. To the Death of Justinian, Vol. 2 of 2 The rulers Of Constantinople would hardly have steered their section of the Empire with even such success as they achieved through the dangers which beset it in the fifth century, had it not been that from the reign Of Arcadius to that Of Anastasius their peaceful relations with the Sassanid kings Of Persia were only twice interrupted by brief hostilities. The unusually long duration Of this period Of peace, notwithstanding the fact that the conditions in Armenia constantly supplied provocations or pretexts for war, was in a great measure due to the occupation of Persia with savage and dangerous enemies who threatened her north-eastern frontier, the Ephthalites or White Huns, but there was a contributory cause in the fact that the power Of the Sassanid kings at this time was steadily declining. It is Signifi cant that when, at the end Of the fifth century, a monarch arose who was able to hold his own against the encroachments of the Zoroastrian priesthood and the nobility, grave hostilities immedi ately ensued which were to last with few and uneasy intervals for a hundred and thirty years. Book excerpt: In the unstable international conditions of the post Cold War world, the role of diplomacy has taken on increasing importance with the greater complexity of relationships between international power centres. The Practice of Diplomacy tracks the historical development of diplomatic relations and methods from the earliest period up to their current transformations in the late twentieth century, showing how they have changed to encompass new technological advances and the needs of modern international environments. This coherent and accessible text brings the history of diplomacy fully up to date, exploring altered perspectives and newly emerging practices resulting from United Nations diplomacy and recent political developments in Eastern and central Europe, including the former Yugoslavia.
