Book Synopsis The Flâneur and his City by : Richard D. E. Burton
Download or read book The Flâneur and his City written by Richard D. E. Burton and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2010-03-15 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book provides a "flâneur’s eye view" of Parisian life in the first half of the nineteenth century: dress, cafés and restaurants, but also shops and passages, the omnibus, bals publics and carnival. The author provides general conclusions about the private and public spheres in "le vieux Paris." Like the flâneur, the author concentrates less on factual information for its own sake--which may be found in the secondary works cited in the text and footnotes--than on the "semiological" or anthropological significance of the cultural forms in question. Links are drawn between cultural institutions and class relations in pre-1850 Paris, with particular emphasis on cultural inequality, on the persistence of cross-class contacts, and the growing differences between classes as reflected in behavior and attitudes.

Book Synopsis The French Generation of 1820 by : Alan Barrie Spitzer
Download or read book The French Generation of 1820 written by Alan Barrie Spitzer and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alan Spitzer approaches the history of the French Restoration by examining the experience of a particular age group born between 1792 and 1803: the generation of 1820. A predominantly male, middle-class, educated minority of this group was perceived as representing all that was most promising and specifically youthful in the period. Their response to the pressures of transition was expressed in the fractious behavior of the youth of the schools,'' and in voluntary associations, masonic lodges, conspiratorial cells, and influential journals, which depended on a dense network of personal relationships. Professor Spitzer portrays these connections in a set of sociograms using new techniques for the visual representation of social networks. Originally published in 1987. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Download or read book Building a Representative Theater Corpus written by Angus Grieve-Smith and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-16 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Digital Parisian Stage Project aims to compile a corpus of plays that are representative of performances in the theaters of Paris through history. This book surveys existing corpora that cover the nineteenth century, lays out the issue of corpus representativeness in detail, and, using a random sample of plays from this period, presents two case studies of language in use in the Napoleonic era. It presents a compelling argument for the compilation and use of representative corpora in linguistic study, and will be of interest to those working in the fields of corpus linguistics, digital humanities, and history of the theater.
