Book Synopsis Fashion Aesthetics and Ethics by : Louise Wallenberg
Download or read book Fashion Aesthetics and Ethics written by Louise Wallenberg and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-05-04 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How are aesthetics and ethics related to the practical realities of the global fashion industry? Both have played an important role in academic fashion studies to this point, but they are most often discussed in the context of abstract phenomena such as modernity and capitalism, or identity issues such as sexuality, class and gender. The essays in this volume strive instead to show how the realities of the global fashion industry have important and pertinent aesthetic and ethical consequences. This collection provides critical and philosophical analysis of the interplay of aesthetics and ethics within the global fashion industry. Characterized by an increasingly fast spinning production, the industry is highly exploitative in terms of environment and labor force: underpaid textile workers, retailers working under brutal competition from the mass-merchandise discounters, young designers, seamstresses and curators often working for free, and a vast body of aspiring models. In addition, fashion-related aesthetic ideals are becoming more influential than ever in directing consumers in their social and personal identification processes and bodily practices with sometimes fatal consequences. Covering a wide range of subjects such as fashion's highly problematic production and consumption practices, the possibility of producing and consuming fashion ethically, fashion's intimate connection with nature and technology, Fashion Aesthetics and Ethics highlights the powerful aesthetical presence of fashion in relation to its ethical premises and often problematic outcomes.
Download or read book The Unit written by Tony Malone and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 1999-12 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can the motive for an action be good enough or spiritual enough to justify its pursuit even if to do so is blatantly illegal and dangerous? THE UNIT answers this question with a "Yes." The novel tells the intriguing, unusual and often times, paradoxically humorous, story of how and why a mysterious man, named only "Lou," along with twelve equally mysterious assistants, forcibly commandeers the local hospital's intensive care unit and holds hostage all of its critically ill patients. Important moral, ethical, and spiritual issues are addressed in the ensuing hostage crisis as Doctor Danny Santore, forensic/investigative radiologist along with a host of accompanying law enforcement officials struggle to regain control of The Unit from the "mad man" Lou and his small occupying army.

Book Synopsis The Scots in early Stuart Ireland by : David Edwards
Download or read book The Scots in early Stuart Ireland written by David Edwards and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2015-11-11 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring Irish-Scottish connections in the period 1603–60, this book brings important new perspectives to the study of the early Stuart state. Acknowledging the pivotal role of the Hiberno-Scottish world, it identifies some of the limits of England’s Anglicising influence in the northern and western ‘British Isles’ and the often slight basis on which the Stuart pursuit of a new ‘British’ consciousness operated. Regarding the Anglo-Scottish relationship, it was chiefly in Ireland that the English and Scots intermingled after 1603, with a variety of consequences, often destabilising. The importance of the Gaelic sphere in Irish-Scottish connections also receives much greater attention here than in previous accounts. This Gaedhealtacht played a central role in the transmission of religious radicalism, both Catholic and Protestant, in Ireland and Scotland, ultimately leading to political crisis and revolution within the British Isles.
