Book Synopsis In the Context of Eternity by : David J. Arnold
Download or read book In the Context of Eternity written by David J. Arnold and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-08-24 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Context of Eternity is a lively and readable one-volume history of the Christian Church, which challenges the view that ancient history came to an end in the fifth century and that nothing of significance then happened until the Renaissance. It explains how an extraordinary intermingling of the Roman Empire, Christianity, and Barbarism produced the most dynamic society the world has ever known, and how the modern world emerged from the interaction of Christianity and Barbarism on the ruins of Rome. There is a prologue explaining the background to the world out of which Christianity developed and an epilogue commenting on the state of the Christian Church at the beginning of the third millennium. The period of two thousand years in between is divided into six sections, each of which is given the same number of pages and each of which is divided into three chapters. Thus, the period from the 330s to the 660s, on “Christendom and the Roman Empire,” is given the same attention as the period on “The Era of Reform,” from the 1330s to the 1660s. Chapter 18 is an account of the development of Christianity in the United States of America.

Book Synopsis Mary Magdalene and the Drama of Saints by : Theresa Coletti
Download or read book Mary Magdalene and the Drama of Saints written by Theresa Coletti and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2013-11-15 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sinner-saint who embraced then renounced sexual and worldly pleasures; a woman who, through her attachment to Jesus, embodied both erotic and sacred power; a symbol of penance and an exemplar of contemplative and passionate devotion: perhaps no figure stood closer to the center of late medieval debates about the sources of spiritual authority and women's contribution to salvation history than did Mary Magdalene, and perhaps nowhere in later medieval England was cultural preoccupation with the Magdalene stronger than in fifteenth-century East Anglia. Looking to East Anglian texts including the N-Town Plays, The Book of Margery Kempe, The Revelations of Julian of Norwich, and Bokenham's Legend of Holy Women, Theresa Coletti explores how the gendered symbol of Mary Magdalene mediates tensions between masculine and feminine spiritual power, institutional and individual modes of religious expression, and authorized and unauthorized forms of revelation and sacred speech. Using the Digby play Mary Magdalene as her touchstone, Coletti engages a wide variety of textual and visual resources to make evident the discursive and material ties of East Anglian dramatic texts and feminine religion to broader traditions of cultural commentary and representation. In bringing the disciplinary perspectives of literary history and criticism, gender studies, and social and religious history to bear on specific local instances of dramatic practice, Mary Magdalene and the Drama of Saints highlights the relevance of Middle English dramatic discourse to the dynamic religious climate of late medieval England. In doing so, the book decisively challenges the marginalization of drama within medieval English studies, elucidates vernacular theater's kinship with influential late medieval religious texts and institutions, and articulates the changing possibilities for sacred representation in the decades before the Reformation.

Book Synopsis Captain Medwin by : Ernest J. Lovell
Download or read book Captain Medwin written by Ernest J. Lovell and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2014-09-10 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is the first biography of Thomas Medwin—literary adventurer, rascal, scholar, confidence man, successful fortune hunter, and bemused speculator on a grand scale in old Italian oil paintings. Poet, novelist, translator of Aeschylus, cousin and boyhood friend of the poet Shelley, he was a man of fiery temper, fierce hatreds, and enduring loves. Although an intimate friend of Lord Byron, he was so dangerous (or disreputable) that his Lordship warned Teresa Guiccioli, his last mistress, not to be alone in Medwin's company. Later, Medwin introduced Byron's daughter to her future husband, Lord Lovelace, and so determined the poet's line of descent. Friend of Washington Irving, gentleman of the old school, neglected Boswell of the nineteenth century, Medwin reported the conversations of Byron, Shelley, Trelawny, Hazlitt, Canova the sculptor, and others. His life and adventures light up little-known aspects of the nineteenth-century literary, military, social, and publishing world—in England, India, Italy, France, Switzerland, and Germany. Medwin served as midwife to the words of a dead man—Lord Byron—who returned to laugh and sneer at the living from the Captain's pages. The Conversations of Lord Byron thus became the most controversial book of the day, going through a dozen editions, in six countries, and being translated into French, German, and Italian. It aroused the wrath, indignation, or enthusiastic interest of such individuals as Goethe, Lady Byron, Lady Caroline Lamb, the Countess Teresa Guiccioli, John Cam Hobhouse (later Lord Broughton), Sir Walter Scott, John Murray, and Washington Irving. Medwin, whose long and adventurous life extended from the rise and flowering of the Romantic Period to the mid-Victorian Age (which he regarded as a dreary decline from the great heights of his youth), was an influence of the first magnitude in determining the early public image of Byron and the reputation of Shelley. This often amusing story, as engrossing as a novel, is drawn from all the available accounts, including many important sources never before published. In effect a new contribution to the biographical study of Byron and Shelley, it clarifies Medwin's relations not only with these two poets but also with many other important and interesting figures of the day.

Book Synopsis The Trumpet Shall Sound by : Eric James
Download or read book The Trumpet Shall Sound written by Eric James and published by Bloomsbury Academic. This book was released on 2006-10-31 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like Myra Hess, Eric James has for a number of years been promising his devoted audience his last book. Now again he promises that The Trumpet Shall Sound will be his last book. In these moving addresses, Eric James addresses in the first place those of more mature years (a rapidly increasing constituency) but also those who are pastorally concerned with them. Here are reflections based on profound spiritual and pastoral experience about the nature and spirituality of growing older, of the loss of close friends and relatives, on the nature of Christian hope, on the purpose of remembrance of the departed and on the true meaning of priesthood. In his introduction, Eric James describes how a chance discovery of a copy of T.S. Eliot's Little Gidding changed his life and how he understood his vocation to be not just a Christian priest but also a Christian preacher. Writing of his recent years of ministry James says simply, 'No peiord of my ministry has been more privileged - or more painful and demanding. One can only trust and obey The Voice of this Calling' In the modern world, we tend to think that we can reach God by running faster, by gobbling up more and more information. In the pages of this book is the true antidote to such folly.
