Book excerpt: Research shoes that parenting a child with autism impacts parental depression and anxiety (Bent, 2006;Schwichtenberg & Porhlmann, 2007; Sharpley, Bitsika, & Efremidis, 1997), increases parental aggravation when special services are needed (Schieve, Oliver, & Innocenti, 2001; Montes & Halterman, 2007). Consequently, there is a strong need for the development of emotion-focused as well as instrumental coping to deal with such stressors. Typical Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) programming pays little attention to parents; emotional and behavioral health when parenting a child with special needs. Research in the ares of building parental motivation to engage in appropriate intervention sources focuses on other at-risk, family-related issues such as adolescent addiction and delinquency using Family Check-Up (FCU; Dishion & Kavanagh, 2003). This and other brief motivational interventions are modeled after concepts of Motivational Interviewing (MI; Miller & Rollnick, 2002), the Drinkers Check-Up (Miller & Rollnick, 2002), and motivational enhancement therapy (MET), and aim to engage and motivate individuals to move toward change. The current study calls attention to the need for intervention in the area parent-centered services and introduces a new program, the Parent Check-Up (PCU). The PCU is based on the principles of MI and adaptations from various MI protocols and treatment manuals tailored to increasing parental motivation to then result in behaviors focused on self-care including instrumental and emotion-focused coping. Formal needs analysis, baseline assessments, and program development, as well as service engagements and completion rates are examined. Satisfaction measures were also evaluated to demonstrate the personal impact of this motivationally-based program on families. Discussion is provided in regard to the practicability and feasibility of adapting an already established evidence-based intervention to an additional population, while specifically exploring the utility of the Parent Check-Up as an ancillary support intervention for families within the context of Applied Behavior Analysis services. Direction for future research, including formal outcome assessment recommendations, are provided.

The PCU connects assessment and intervention by identifying strengths and areas of growth in parenting practices within families. The PCU is based on the premises of the Family Check-up model (FCU) (Dishion& Kavanagh, 2003), which is a brief family intervention that emphasizes motivation to change in families and utilizes Motivational Interviewing (MI) strategies (see Miller &Rollnick, 2002). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the combined effects of the PCU and individualized IY parent training on adoptive foster parents and adopted foster children behavior. The study focused on changes in parenting practices that are linked to reduction in externalizing behavior problems in children. Results indicated that implementation of the PCU with tailored Incredible Years parent training program increased parent implementation of positive parenting practices, especially, total use of praise, use of behavior specific praise, use of clear commands and ignoring. Further, these changes in parent behavior contributed to positive change in children behavior, in particular increase rate of compliance and overall decrease in externalizing behavior problems. The findings reported expand the literature base on parent consultation. The results are promising because they suggest that collaborative action planning can make parents active therapeutic agents at home, thus leading to change in the areas of need.
