Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Parchments of the Faith Some years ago the preparation of a volume entitled, The Story of the Manuscripts, met with the kind favor of the public, and proved the general interest in the documentary evidence for the text Of the New Testament, the theme of which it treated. That volume, I believe, was the first of the many that have been published seeking to give in a popular way the results of the special ist's labors in the textual department of biblical studies. In the meantime the discovery of many ancient documents and the progress of archaeo logical research, the appearance of the Canterbury Revision, the publication of Westcott and Hort's Greek New Testament, of Gregory's Prolegomena to Tischendorfs eighth edition, and of other im portant works, as well as great advances in the critical study of the Bible, have enhanced the public interest in the whole subject of the docu mentary sources of the sacred text. To meet a desire frequently expressed, this volume has been written, bringing the story down to the present time and treating of the entire Bible. This work is wholly independent Of the former book to which reference has been made, pursuing a differ ent plan and being independently written, and I do not know of any book that covers exactly the same ground. It would be impossible to mention in detail the multitude of works which have been consulted in the preparation of these pages, but in the most important instances they have been named in ap ended notes. I wish to acknowledge my in ebtedness to all published sources of informa tion which I have found accessible, and especially to the favor shown me by the great libraries which have given me access to original documents and valuable fac similar. The reproduction In this volume of whole pages of text in fac szmzze has been deemed a better method of illustration, than to present plates containing only a few lines of text of the original size. The reader by this method gets a better idea of the appearance of the original page, and while the exigencies of a modern book demand a great reduction in the size Of the fac sz'mz'le, the use of a lens will at once restore the text to its proper dimensions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rest of Faith N 0 need then for Christians to become angry at injuries they would be sweetly conscious that their blood is precious in His sight. N 0 need to stand up for their reputation against malicious offenders. N O need then to be putting self forward. Oh! What a. Hidden monster is little self! It is only little indeed, and herein is seen its greatness as an enemy to the soul. It is a little thing to be seeking to advance, a mean thing to set forward, but when set forward a devil to destroy and tear down, and annihilate everything noble, and pure, and holy. N o, in a true and complete consecra tion, self would be given to God and left on His altar to be consumed in His service. May we not safely say that all difficulties arising in churches or in communities come from an undue attention to self. But God sees this, and has distinctly ordered that self shall be laid down at His feet. It is this which marks the new creature. Old things were full of self. The new things, therefore, are rightly supposed to be free from self. Where in reality they are not so, there must either be fearful deception or fearful ignorance. You must not prophesy; in that, you know, you do not believe." " No; but nevertheless we shall see so-called sacred dogma and history exploded, for Mr. Newman " " Thinks so, of course; and he must be right, because he has never been known to be wrong in any of his judgments, or even to vary in them. But we have had enough, I think, of these subjects this evening, and it is too bad to give you only a controversial welcome. I want to have some conversation with you about very different things, and more pleasant just now. We shall have plenty of opportunity to discuss theological points." To this Fellowes assented: they resumed general conversation, and I finished my letters. July 3. We were all sitting, as on the previous day, in the library. " Book-faith " I heard Harrington say, laughing; " why, as to that I must needs acknowledge that the whole school of Deism, ' rational' or ' spiritual, ' have the least reason in the world to indulge in sneers at book- faith; for, upon my word, then: faith has consisted in little else. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Address to All Believers in Christ: By a Witness to the Divine Autlientieity of the Book of Mormon I will now give you a description of the manner in which the Book of Mormon was translated. Joseph Smith would put the seer stone into a. Hat, and put his face in the hat, drawing it closely around his face to exclude the light; and in the darkness the spiritual light would shine. A piece of something resembling parchment would appear, and on that appeared the writing. One character at a time would appear, and under it was the interpretation in English. Brother Joseph would read off the English to Oliver Cowdery, who was his principal scribe, and when it was written down and repeated to Brother Joseph to see if it was correct, then it would disappear, and another character with the interpretation would appear. Thus the Book of Mormon was translated by the gift and power of God, and not by any power of man. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-12-06 with total page 1824 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This epic poem written by Dante Alighieri between c. 1308 and his death in 1321 is widely considered the preeminent work of Italian literature, and is seen as one of the greatest works of world literature. The Divine Comedy serves as the physical (scientific), political, and spiritual guidebook of Dante's Fourteenth Century universe. The poem's imaginative and allegorical vision of the afterlife is a culmination of the medieval world-view as it had developed in the Western Church. It helped establish the Tuscan dialect, in which it is written, as the standardized Italian language. It is divided into three parts: Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso. On the surface, the poem describes Dante's travels through Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven; but at a deeper level, it represents allegorically the soul's journey towards God. At this deeper level, Dante draws on medieval Christian theology and philosophy, especially Thomistic philosophy and the Summa Theologica of Thomas Aquinas. Consequently, the Divine Comedy has been called "the Summa in verse". Dante Alighieri (1265 – 1321), was a major Italian poet of the Late Middle Ages. His Divine Comedy, originally called Comedìa (modern Italian: Commedia) and later christened Divina by Boccaccio, is widely considered the most important poem of the Middle Ages and the greatest literary work in the Italian language.

Book excerpt: Online learning is a key feature of the contemporary educational landscape and has entered mainstream policy, provision and practice. But if online education is to reach mature development and evaluation, it must be open to critical appraisal. This book considers the implementation of online learning within adult theological education. This can be an area of challenge or contention, especially when established academic practices and cherished values are seen as threatened when handed over to online delivery. This opens questions about theology, pedagogy and online education. Does online teaching and learning bring or demand a new or transformed (disruptive) pedagogy or does it result in maintenance or replication (sustaining) of traditional values and existing practices? What might the opportunities and benefits be? Who stands to gain? Who stands to lose? And what evidence is there to evaluate the quality of ‘doing theology’ online? This book examines a long-standing programme of continuing professional development delivered fully online to adult practitioners working across Christian education and ministry settings. It builds upon the author’s international experience as an online educator for over a decade. Key themes relate adult learning to theological pedagogy, authority, and online community. The concept of interruptive pedagogy is presented as an interpretative model to critically appraise an approach to online education that draws on the best theological tradition yet also looks to the future.
