Book excerpt: The field of Asian Art History has made substantial efforts to chronologically examine the pagoda architecture in Asia's political and religious contexts. By contrast, the contemporary appropriations and representations of the pagoda are rarely studied in relation to visual histography, meaning how historical consciousness is shaped by art expressions and visual culture. Likewise, the field of Visual Studies often ignores the layered meanings of the symbol's material and cultural history. This project shall provide an overview of SF Chinatown's visual history from the mid-1800s to today through the colonial and postcolonial periods. In addition, it will propose a conceptual framework for reimagining the Chinese diaspora within the Bay Area's art history – a reimagination of the physical and metaphysical movement of the pagoda across various spaces and times – to develop an alternative art history. The three chapters will follow the pagoda's trajectory and elaborate on its effects: how did the pagoda originate and develop in Asia? How did Chinatown transform from an in organized slum to a pagoda complex, and how does Chinatown stand today concerning contemporary art and visual culture? These chapters will demonstrate an unexamined aspect of Chinese American visual culture and argue that the pagoda in flux is a compelling example of how art and symbolism navigate identity construction, racial relations, political interests, and cultural autonomy through representations and self representations.
