Book excerpt: Fertility trends estimated alternately from birth histories and own children method are compared for eight developing countries in which the World Fertility Survey was conducted. Principle hypotheses are that fertility trends estimated by the two approaches suffer from similar errors in the reporting of women's and children's ages, and that these errors are more severe in estimates derived from own children than in estimates derived from birth histories. The hypotheses are confirmed in four of the eight countries. Potter's hypothesis about misplacement of events toward the survey date, which assumes bunching of births five to ten years before the survey and accurate reporting of births during first five years or so immediately preceding the survey, resulting in a spurious estimated fertility decline, does not receive much support from these data. Some of the estimated fertility declines do indeed seem spurious, but Potter's explanation of them seems inconsistent with the data. In some countries, patterns of age misreporting involving upward rounding of children's ages provide an equally plausible explanation that is more consistent with the data. (Author)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last 35 years or so have witnessed a dramatic shift in the demography of many developing countries. Before 1960, there were substantial improvements in life expectancy, but fertility declines were very rare. Few people used modern contraceptives, and couples had large families. Since 1960, however, fertility rates have fallen in virtually every major geographic region of the world, for almost all political, social, and economic groups. What factors are responsible for the sharp decline in fertility? What role do child survival programs or family programs play in fertility declines? Casual observation suggests that a decline in infant and child mortality is the most important cause, but there is surprisingly little hard evidence for this conclusion. The papers in this volume explore the theoretical, methodological, and empirical dimensions of the fertility-mortality relationship. It includes several detailed case studies based on contemporary data from developing countries and on historical data from Europe and the United States.

Book excerpt: Approaches estimating wanted fertility typically depend upon responses to survey questions on desired family size, wanted status of recent births, and desire to continue childbearing. These responses and dependent approaches are, however, typically upwardly biased in measuring wanted fertility. The latter of these 3 approaches, women's desires to continue childbearing, is the least biased of standard preference measures, and is proposed as the basis of a new indirect method of estimating wanted fertility. Existing approaches are reviewed, followed by a description of this proposed model of securing more accurate estimates of both wanted and unwanted components of total fertility. 2 hypothetical applications are conducted to help explain the procedure's logic. The method is then applied to data from 35 World Fertility Survey and 13 Demographic and Health Survey developing countries, and finds results indicating an average 26% of fertility to be unwanted. With wanted fertility ranging from 98% in Senegal to 51% in Peru, average unwanted fertility is substantially higher than that estimated using other approaches. The proportion of unwanted fertility was also found to vary systematically over the course of fertility transition, with lowest levels at beginning and end, and highest among countries in mid-transition. Considering perfect birth control, the potential role of birth spacing to contribute to quantitative control is mentioned.
