Book excerpt: THE OFFICIAL BOOK, FULLY ENDORSED BY QUEEN ELIZABETH II From Her Majesty’s trusted confidant and Dresser Angela Kelly LVO comes a lavishly designed book of never-before-seen photos of The Queen, Her wardrobe and Her jewels and features intimate anecdotes from Angela’s 25-year career working closely with Her Majesty. A truly unique keepsake and collectors’ item to be treasured. ‘For the nearly seven decades of her reign, Her Majesty The Queen has used clothing to create a powerful visual identity that transcends fashion and has made her perhaps the most readily identifiable person on the planet. Angela Kelly, building on the work of the great designers and milliners who have worked with Her Majesty through the years – including couturiers Sir Norman Hartnell, Sir Hardy Amies, and Ian Thomas, and milliners such as Simone Mirman and Freddy Fox – brings her own imagination to bear on an iconic ‘uniform’ that suggests continuity and tradition, and ensures that the wearer is always the most visible person in a room or a crowd.’–Anna Wintour, Vogue When Angela Kelly and The Queen are together, laughter echoes through the corridors of Buckingham Palace. Angela has worked with The Queen and walked the corridors of the Royal Household for twenty-five years, initially as Her Majesty’s Senior Dresser and then latterly as Her Majesty’s Personal Advisor, Curator, Wardrobe and In-house Designer. As the first person in history to hold this title, she shares a uniquely close working relationship with The Queen. In The Other Side of the Coin, The Queen has personally given Angela her blessing to share their extraordinary bond with the world. Whether it’s preparing for a formal occasion or brightening Her Majesty’s day with a playful joke, Angela’s priority is to serve and support. Sharing never-before-seen photographs – many from Angela’s own private collection – and charming anecdotes of their time spent together, this revealing book provides memorable insights into what it’s like to work closely with The Queen, to curate her wardrobe and to discover a true and lasting connection along the way. ‘The book documents the unique working relationship between Her Majesty The Queen and the woman who has been her Personal Assistant and Senior Dresser for more than two decades: Angela Kelly. It gives a rare insight into the demands of the job of supporting the Monarch, and we gain privileged insight into a successful working relationship, characterized by humor, creativity, hard work, and a mutual commitment to service and duty. Angela is a talented and inspiring woman, who has captured the highlights of her long career with The Queen for us all to share.’ –Samantha Cohen, Assistant Private Secretary to The Queen (2011–2018)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite high levels of inequality and wage stagnation over several decades, the United States has done relatively little to address these problems—at least in part due to public opinion, which remains highly influential in determining the size and scope of social welfare programs that provide direct benefits to retirees, unemployed workers or poor families. On the other hand, social tax expenditures—or tax subsidies that help citizens pay for expenses such as health insurance or the cost of college and invest in retirement plans—have been widely and successfully implemented, and they now comprise nearly 40 percent of the spending of the American social welfare state. In The Other Side of the Coin, political scientists Christopher Ellis and Christopher Faricy examine public opinion towards social tax expenditures—the other side of the American social welfare state—and their potential to expand support for such social investment. Tax expenditures seek to accomplish many of the goals of direct government expenditures, but they distribute money indirectly, through tax refunds or reductions in taxable income, rather than direct payments on goods and services or benefits. They tend to privilege market-based solutions to social problems such as employer-based tax subsidies for purchasing health insurance versus government-provided health insurance. Drawing on nationally representative surveys and survey experiments, Ellis and Faricy show that social welfare policies designed as tax expenditures, as opposed to direct spending on social welfare programs, are widely popular with the general public. Contrary to previous research suggesting that recipients of these subsidies are often unaware of indirect government aid—sometimes called “the hidden welfare state”—Ellis and Faricy find that citizens are well aware of them and act in their economic self-interest in supporting tax breaks for social welfare purposes. The authors find that many people view the beneficiaries of social tax expenditures to be more deserving of government aid than recipients of direct public social programs, indicating that how government benefits are delivered affects people’s views of recipients’ worthiness. Importantly, tax expenditures are more likely to appeal to citizens with anti-government attitudes, low levels of trust in government, or racial prejudices. As a result, social spending conducted through the tax code is likely to be far more popular than direct government spending on public programs that have the same goals. The first empirical examination of the broad popularity of tax expenditures, The Other Side of the Coin provides compelling insights into constructing a politically feasible—and potentially bipartisan—way to expand the scope of the American welfare state.

These are only a few essential topics that we need to look into, refine, and do a societal self-reflection on. There is more than one side to any coin. It means that with any one way of looking at something in life, there will be a different way or different ways of looking at it.

Though confined to a wheelchair, she took the time to write her witty and tender observations about her day-to-day life with SMA. Her book, "Tracy's Story - The Other Side of the Coin", was written by Tracy personally, each word originally typed on electric typewriter using a pencil, one letter at a time. It is a funny and heartwarming collection of stories from a woman who exemplified courage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Africa is a lost cause'. This is a cynical view held widely in the West, in much of the world and even in Africa. Many people in the old European colonial powers - and not only the dwindling band of 'old Africa hands' who served in the colonies - are in despair, lamenting maladministration, corruption, civil and inter-state wars, poverty, famine and the seemingly unstoppable march of AIDS. And all in a great continent with abundant human and natural resources. The other side of the coin is that hope is beginning to dawn as Africa's plight is recognised by the Africans themselves and its vital strategic, political and economic importance in the age of globalisation is gaining universal appreciation. An 'African renaissance' may seem far-fetched but there is perhaps light at the end of the tunnel. This is the backdrop against which Andrew Sardanis' fascinating story is set. It begins with his work as a journalist in Cyprus - on the receiving end of British colonialism - and moves to Northern Rhodesia where he played a leading role as an international businessman and in the politics of independence leading to the new nation of Zambia. He was at the heart of Zambia's political and business development, and always a sympathetic but critical observer and adviser, both in government and in business, also a close but objective friend of leaders including Kenneth Kaunda.

Hoover offers his frank evaluation of Roosevelt's foreign policies before Pearl Harbor and policies during the war, as well as an examination of the war's consequences, including the expansion of the Soviet empire at war's end and the eruption of the cold war against the Communists.

Book excerpt: The third side of a coin is essentially the one that connects the other two sides: the head and the tail. This analogy is used throughout the book to emphasize the importance of “mastery learning” in any profession, such as medicine, law, or engineering. Mastery learning is the essential outcome of uniting the two flat faces of a coin with the help of the third circular side. In any profession, the two flat faces of the coin are theory and practice, and the third side is the testing. The author gives examples from his more than fifty years of experience in engineering practice and engineering teaching to prove that mastery learning is essential. In the very rapidly changing pace of technology today, any curriculum that ignores mastery learning is bound to produce obsolete engineers.

Book excerpt: Hamilton Fish is one of the few living former members of the House of Representatives who participated actively in the consideration of the early New Deal measures and the dramatic prewar debates in 1939-41. His political experience includes 3 years in the New York State Assembly and 25 years in Congress, 10 as ranking minority member of the Foreign Affairs Committee and 4 years in the same capacity on the Rules Committee. His firsthand experience places him in a unique position to write the history of our still almost-unknown involvement in World War II. The early chapters of FDR: The Other Side of the Coin deal with the president's clandestine diplomatic negotiations in the dangerous months before American intervention in World War II: in the Danzig crisis, with which Mr. Fish was deeply involved; the war ultimatum to Japan, kept secret even from Congress, and the unpublicized communications with Ambassador Bullitt and British leaders. Mr. Fish feels that had FDR listened to public opinion, overwhelmingly against American intervention in every poll, Hitler would have attacked Soviet Russia, not Britain and France. He documents how FDR refused every prewar peace concession the Japanese offered, and later refused peace initiatives from the head of the German Secret Service -- at a staggering cost in American lives and the lives of those in Nazi concentration camps. In his analysis of the geopolitical effects of the Yalta agreements, Mr. Fish traces the causes and roots of the Korean and Vietnamese wars to the territorial concessions given the Communists at Yalta. The readers will also note disturbing parallels between the political steps which led to our involvement in World War II and those that proceded the Vietnamese debacle. Above all, this provocative book is a plea for a return to the constitutional government envisioned by the Founding Fathers, with Congress having the sole right and power to declare war. Mr. Fish consistently demonstrates that he trusts and has faith in the American people in both war and peace, and insists that no president, Republican or Democrat, has the legal right to involve the United States in war by trickery in defiance of the Congress, of the will of the American people, and of the Constitution of the United States.
