Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this, the first of two ground-breaking volumes on the nature of language in the light of the way it evolved, James Hurford looks at how the world first came to have a meaning in the minds of animals and how in humans this meaning eventually came to be expressed as language. He reviews a mass of evidence to show how close some animals, especially primates and more especially apes, are to the brink of human language. Apes may not talk to us but they construct rich cognitive representations of the world around them, and here, he shows, are the evolutionary seeds of abstract thought - the means of referring to objects, the memory of events, even elements of the propositional thinking philosophers have hitherto reserved for humans. What then, he asks, is the evolutionary path between the non-speaking minds of apes and our own speaking minds? Why don't apes communicate the richness of their thoughts to each other? Why do humans alone have a unique disposition to reveal their thoughts in complex detail? Professor Hurford searches a wide range of evidence for the answers to these central questions, including degrees of trust, the role of hormones, the ability to read minds, and the willingness to cooperate. Expressing himself congenially in consistently colloquial language the author builds up a vivid picture of how mind, language, and meaning evolved over millions of years. His book is a landmark contribution to the understanding of linguistic and thinking processes, and the fullest account yet published of the evolution of language and communication. "A wonderful read - lucid, informative, and entertaining, while at the same time never talking down to the reader by sacrificing argumentation for the sake of 'simplicity'. Likely to be heralded as the major publication dealing with language evolution to date. Frederick J. Newmeyer, University of Washington
Book Synopsis The Origins of Meaning by : D. Welton
Download or read book The Origins of Meaning written by D. Welton and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whenever one attempts to write about a philosopher whose native tongue is not English the problem of translations is inevitable. For the sake of simplicity and accuracy we have translated all of our quotations from the German unless otherwise noted. But for the sake of easy reference we have included the page numbers of the English translations as well as the German texts. Because there is a new translation forthcoming, we have not included references to the English translation of Ideen I. Since the German texts are readily available, we did not reproduce them in the footnotes. All quotations translated from Husserl's unpublished manuscripts, however, do include the German text in the footnotes. This work is greatly indebted to the criticism and help of Professor Ludwig Landgrebe, whose support made possible two years at the UniversiHit Koln. Garth Gillan and Lothar Eley also have contributed much to the basic direction ofthis work. Others such as Edward Casey, Claude Evans, Irene Grypari, Don Ihde, Grant Johnson, Martin Lang, J. N. Mohanty, Robert Ray and Susan Wood have been more than helpful in their discussions with me on these topics and in their criticisms of some of the ambiguities of an earlier draft. Likewise a special word of thanks to Reto Parpan whose insightful corrections were most valuable and to Nancy Gifford for her discussions on matters epistemolo gical and for her help in the final preparation of the book.
Book Synopsis Philosophy, Psychoanalysis and the Origins of Meaning by : David Snelling
Download or read book Philosophy, Psychoanalysis and the Origins of Meaning written by David Snelling and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-28 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2001. Drawing on recent work in the philosophy of psychoanalysis, and on considerations of the nature of psychoanalytic theory itself, this book reveals new possibilities which psychoanalysis offers for an understanding of the mind - more broadly, the subject of mental states - and its relation to the world. Entailing a re-examination of an approach embedded in the work of certain Continental thinkers, notably Heidegger and Hegel, the connections between philosophy and psychoanalysis presented in this book represent a fresh departure. Linking Kleinian notions of an "inner world" of unconscious phantasy, to philosophical conceptions of non-linguistic meaning whose significance for the psychoanalytic understanding of subjectivity has been hitherto overlooked, Snelling argues that psychoanalysis demands a significant place in our philosophical understanding of ourselves.

Book Synopsis A Step by Step Analysis Towards Understanding the Origin Meaning and Implications of Taqlid by : Allāma Dr. Sāni Ṣāliḥ Muṣṯapha
Download or read book A Step by Step Analysis Towards Understanding the Origin Meaning and Implications of Taqlid written by Allāma Dr. Sāni Ṣāliḥ Muṣṯapha and published by Paragon Publishing. This book was released on 2018-08-22 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is a challenge and a wake-up call on the current Muslim Umma exposing their apparent ineptitude and disregard to the warnings signs lessons and proofs in the Holy Qur’ān and the Aḥādīth of the Holy Apostle. Muslim Ummas' knowledge is abundant but without spiritual leader (an Imām/Caliph). This leads to distorting the Sunnah. Knowledge becomes subsequently not substantiated by action. Opinion has replaced firmness comprehensiveness conclusiveness and grasp of the Universal Message. There is no way out or an alternative to the woes of the Muslim Umma, but to remember Muḥammad Rasūlullah and his Ṣaḥābas and then act upon their examples. There is no Muslim who is not a Muqallid (imitator) of the Holy Apostle for the Sunnah is self explanatory. He is the only one. A Muslim should avoid begging Allah to return him to earth to work righteous deeds other than the deed he had done. Therefore imitating one other than the Holy Apostle is not allowed.

This book was released on 2017-05-20 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FEW WORDS ARE NECESSARY TO INTRODUCE THIS WORK TO THE READER. IT PARTAKES OF THE NATURE OF AN ENCYCLOPAEDIA, WITH THE SAVING CLAUSE THAT THE INFORMATION IT SETS FORTH IS CONFINED TO A PLAIN STATEMENT OF FACTS. VERBAL EMBELLISHMENTS HAVE BEEN STUDIOUSLY AVOIDED. THOSE WHO SEEK FOR ADDITIONAL INTELLIGENCE MAY EASILY OBTAIN IT FROM ORDINARILY AVAILABLE SOURCES. TO ACCOUNT FOR THE ORIGIN OF POPULAR PHRASES AND NAMES HAS BEEN THE AUTHOR'S SOLE DESIGN. TO THE BEST OF HIS KNOWLEDGE, NO OTHER WORK OF THE KIND EXISTS. FROM THE STORES OF HIS OWN KNOWLEDGE, ACQUIRED THROUGH MANY YEARS OF OMNIVOROUS READING, PATIENT INQUIRY, AND INVESTIGATION, HE HAS BEEN ENABLED TO BRING TOGETHER AN Olla podrida WHICH SHOULD GO FAR TOWARDS SUPPLYING A WANT. THE ORIGIN OF PLACE-NAMES IS INTERESTING IN THAT IT OPENS UP THE HISTORY OF PEOPLES AND THE CIVILISING INFLUENCES, IF SO ONE MIGHT TERM IT, OF CONQUEST. LONDON STREET-NAMES, IN PARTICULAR, CONVEY IN ONE WORD TO A PERSON OF ANTIQUARIAN TASTES AS MUCH MEANING AS "A VOLUME OF FORGOTTEN LORE." AS TO PHRASES AND EXPRESSIONS, THE AUTHOR HAS MADE A SPECIAL STUDY OF THE SUBJECT. A GREAT MANY AMERICANISMS HAVE BEEN INCLUDED, BUT AS THE NUMBER IS DAILY INCREASING IT WOULD REQUIRE A MONTHLY PUBLICATION OF SUCH HOME-MADE PHRASES TO KEEP FULLY ABREAST WITH THE TIMES. THAT NOTHING SHOULD BE WANTING IN THE WAY OF EXHAUSTIVENESS, IT HAS BEEN THOUGHT ADVISABLE TO INCORPORATE IN THE viTEXT A NUMBER OF SLANG TERMS AND EXPRESSIONS WHICH DAILY ASSAIL ONE'S EARS. TO THE AUTHOR THE COMPILATION OF THIS VOLUME HAS BEEN A PLEASANT RECREATION IN THE INTERVALS OF MORE EXACTING LITERARY LABOURS. IF IT BE FOUND TO CONTAIN A PLETHORA OF GOOD THINGS, THE READER WILL, OF COURSE, TAKE THEM OUT IN SMALL DOSES. T. H. J. LONDON, 1906.
