Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Origins of Christianity, Vol. 3 The fifteen or sixteen years of religious history comprised in this volume in'the embryonic age of Christianity, are the years with which we are best acquainted. Jesus and the primitive Church at Jerusalem re semble the images of a far-off paradise, lost in a mysterious mist. On the other hand, the arrival of St Paul at Rome, in consequence of the step the Author of the Acts has taken in closing at that juncture his narrative, marks in the history of Christian origins the commencement of a profound darkness into which the bloody glare of the barbarous feasts of Nero, and the thunders of the Apocalypse, cast only a few gleams. In particular, the death of the Apostles is enveloped in an impenetrable obscurity. On the contrary, the era of the missions of St Paul, especially of the second mission and the third, is known to us through documents of the greatest value. The Acts, till then so legendary, become suddenly quite authentic; the last chapters, com. Posed in part of the narrative of an eye-witness, are the sole complete historical writings which we have of the early times of Christianity. In fine, those years, through a privilege very rare in similar circum stances, provide us with documents, the dates of which are absolutely authentic, and a series of letters, the most important of which have withstood all the tests of criticism, and which have never been sub jected to interpolations. In the introduction to the preceding volume, we have made an ex amination of the Book of Acts. We must now discuss seriatim the different epistles which bear the name of St Paul. The Apostle informs us himself, that even during his lifetime there were in circulation in his name several spurious letters, and he often took precautions to prevent frauds. We are, therefore, only carrying out his intentions in subject ing the writings which have been put forth as his to a rigorous censorship. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Origins of Christianity: The Gospels The question whether the epistle attributed to Clemens Romanus is really by that holy personage, has only a mediocre importance, since the writing in question is represented as the collective work of the Roman Church, and since the problem confines itself, consequently, as to who held the pen on this particular occasion. It is not the same as the epistles attributed to St Ignatius. The fragments which com pose this collection are either authentic or the work of a forger. In the second hypothesis they were at least sixty years posterior to the death of St Ignatius, and such is the importance of the changes which Operated in those sixty years, that the documentary value of the said fragments is absolutely changed by them. It is hence impossible to treat the history of the origins of Christianity, without taking up a decided position in this regard. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Origins of Christianity, Vol. 7 This volume closes the series of essays which I have dedicated to the History of the Origins of Christianity. It contains the exhibition of the development of the Church during the reign of Marcus-Aurelius, and the parallel picture of the efforts of philosophy to improve civil society. The second century of our era has had the double glory of definitely founding Christianity - that is to say, the grand principle which hits wrought the reformation of manners by faith in the supernatural, and of unrolling, thanks to stoical teaching and without any element of the marvellous, the unset attempt of the laic school of virtue which the world has known till now. These two attempts were strangers to cacti other, and rather contradict than aid each other reciprocally; but the triumph of Christianity is only explicable when we have taken account of what there was of force and of insufficiency in the philosophical attempt. Marcus-Aurelius is on this point the subject of study to which we must constantly refer. He sums up all that there was of good in the ancient world, and he offers criticism this advantage, of presenting himself to it unveiled, thanks to a writing of an uncontested sincerity and authenticity. More than ever do I think that tho period of the beginning, if we might so express it, closed at the death of Marcus-Aurelius, in 180. At that date the child had all its organs; it is separated from its mother; it shall henceforth live its own life. The death of Marcus-Aurelius could have been considered as marking the end of ancient civilisation. What good bay been done alter that, has been done by the Hellene-Roman principle; the Judaeo-Syrian principle gains, and, although more than a hundred years shall pass away before its final triumph, we see well already that the future is its own. The third century is the agony of a world, which, in the second century, is still full of life and energy. Far from me be the thought of lowering the ages which follow the epoch with which I have closed my work. These are sad days in history: there are no days barren and without interest. The development of Christianity remains a spectacle highly interesting, while the Christian Churches count such men as St. lrenaeus, Clement of Alexandria, Tertullian, and Origen. The development of Christianity, which was wrought at Rome and in Africa, in the time of St. Cypriao, and of Pope Cornelius. ought to In- studied with tho most extreme care. The martyrs of the time of Decius and Diocletian do not yield in heroism to those of Rome, Smyrna, and Lyons in the first and second centuries. But it is there we have what is called Ecclesiastical History - a history eminently curious and worthy of being written with love aim all the refinements of the most attentive scheme, but essentially distinct, nevertheless, from the history of Christian ongins - that is to say, of the analysis of the successive transformations which the germ laid by Jesus in the bosom of humanity has submitted to before becoming a complete and durable Church. It needs methods quite different to treat the different ages of a grand formation, whether religious or political. Presenting the subject from an interdenominational view point, it aims to awaken an interest for the church and'the cause of Christ, and to exert an infin ence in favor of primitive Christian piety. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Testament History: A Study of the Beginnings of Christianity This history might be more strictly called a study of the beginnings of Christianity. While designed primarily for use as a college textbook, it should be of equal value to any reader who wishes to trace the story of Christianity in its first days. This is first Of all a historical study. The average man has been wont to regard Christianity as a fixed and finished something that has been dropped down from the skies. If you speak of the Christian religion he will think first of all of a collection of writings, or of a body of doctrine, or Of the institution of the church. But these three, Bible and doctrine and church, are simply the products of a greater movement that lies back of them. To understand Christi amity we must go back to this great current of life which was at once the greatest revelation of the divine Spirit and the greatest movement of the human spirit that mankind has known. What was the world to which this new life came? What did its Founder teach and do? How did the world brotherhood come out of the little company of Jews that followed him? On the evening of that day Dr. Bigg was seized by the illness of which he died, without any full return of consciousness, on July 15. A few days before he had told the Secretary to the Delegates that, though he might polish up his work to some extent as it passed through the Press, the book was as he meant it to stand. The work of the editor has therefore been narrowly limited. I have verified the references, and have added a few where it appeared that clearness required them but I have altered nothing except in the very few passages where the reference given seemed to me to be manifestly wrong. I do not know what changes Dr. Bigg himself might have introduced, but it has seemed right to leave the book as nearly as possible as it was when he sent it to the Press. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Beginnings of Christianity The studies and discourses that are herein ofiered to the public deal with some general conditions of Christian life in the first three centuries of our era. Though already printed, at intervals and amid the pressure of grave academic duties, it is hoped that a certain unity of doctrine, purpose, and interest will not be found wanting to their collection as a series. In one way or another they illustrate certain phases and circumstances of those wonderful centuries before Constantine the Great, when the constitution and the institutions of the new religious society were de veloping on all sides within the vast Empire of Rome. The teachings of Jesus Christ were the pure, sweet leaven that permeated the decaying and unhappy society of antiquity, saved from its mass of corruption some germs of goodness and truth, of beauty and justice, and strengthened the State against those shocks that would otherwise have reduced it to pri maeval barbarism. A perennial charm must therefore attach to any narrative of the problems and vicissi tudes of this era. This is particularly true of the sufferings of the infant churches, and the social changes their rapid growth could not fail to work in the Roman society that seemed to contain them, but of which. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Inquiry Concerning the Origin of Christianity The analysis of the, four Gospels, proceeding on the admission that they may contain a mixture of truth and error, is a very com plicated but not impracticable task. It is necessary to form an opinion as to the date of each writing, the general character of each author, and his peculiarities as a writer; to institute continual comparisons between the events or discourses which he relates, and the opinions and controversies which arose subsequently to his own time to weigh the probability in favour of the real occurrence of a fact, considered in reference to the ascertained history of the time, with that in favour of its invention by the author or some intermediate narrator; to consider what greater degree of weight is due to the testimony from the accordance of all, or of several of the writers and to ascertain whether they wrote independently, or copied from each other. By this laborious method of sifting and examining, it must be admitted that it would be possible to obtain a tolerably correct history from a collection of records acknowledged to be of a very mixed character. There cannot be a more important question proposed than this: - "Is the religion of Christ from God, or is it a cunningly-devised fable?" Many remarks might be offered to illustrate the overwhelming importance of this inquiry. The following deserve attention. Christianity has been acknowledged divine by the wisest, the greatest, and the most talented of mankind. This fact is not brought forward as an evidence of the Divine Origin of Christianity, but as a fact that shows the unreasonableness and folly of neglecting to investigate its evidences. Bacon, the father of modern philosophy, who has been represented as "the wisest and brightest of mankind," was a Christian. Newton, the most distinguished of philosophers, whose fame spreads through an admiring world, wrote in defence of Christianity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Antiqua Mater: A Study of Christian Origins Wat may we learn - apart from the books of the New Testament - from the old Christian and the Gramo Roman literature of the second century, in respect to the origin and the earliest development of Christianity?' It seemed to the writer convenient, and even necessary for the sake of clearness, to understand the question as referring to the origin and early history of the people called Christiani, and of their beliefs and practices. The term Christianity seems of too vague and vast an import to be fitted for introduction into a historical investigation of this kind; moreover, it is something of an anachronism to use so abstract a denomination in connection with the new-forming religious life of the second century. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Christianity, Vol. 1 You cannot understand the history of the first centuries of Christianity, the phases through which it passed, the heresies which sprang up around it, the changes which 1t underwent, unless you first make yourself acquainted with the anterior or contemporaneous doctrines and religions. Nothing is insulated in the destinies of our race it is by the past that the present is explained and the future un veiled. Most Of the ancient forms of worship seem to be derived from a common origin. You find in that common origin, with some slight exceptions, the same theogonies, the same cosmogonies, the same religious institutions. Mosaism, although distinguished from the rest by the purity Of its conceptions, nevertheless took from them divers ceremonies and ordinances. In the last ages preceding the Christian era the Israelites, brought into contact with other nations by the captivity and by voluntary dispersion, adopted, under the influence of traditions and commentaries of old unknown, opinions which their sacred books do not contain, or at least do not declare in an explicit manner. Christianity in its turn coming, in its earliest days, forth from J udea to establish itself in the midst of polytheistic populations, failed to keep itself free from the influence of that medium, in the degree in which it Spread abroad it borrowed more or less according to the position of each Church or each group of Churches, from their philosophy, their rites, their superstitions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Christianity The little book herewith given to the public is based upon the "Kircheugeschichte im Grundriss," by Professor Rudolph Sohm, professor of jurisprudence in the University of Leipzig, the many excellencies of which are enhanced by the fact that here Church history is written from the stand-point of a lawyer. The aim has been to preserve every thing of value to the American reader which the original work contains, and to add much which it omits or barely mentions. Thus 17, 18, 37, 38, 39, 53, 54, 55, 56, are all additional, as also the supplementary and explanatory notes, and the chronological tables. In the translated portions, omissions and additions were made, and statements of opinion altered whenever it was deemed necessary. The book in its English form, therefore, is practically an independent work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Early Christianity The extent of the Roman Empire is something which it is very difficult for us to realise. In a.d. 70, when Jerusalem was destroyed, and all men could see that Judaism and Christianity were detached from one another, the Roman Empire included thirty-six provinces, and stretched from Southern Britain to Armenia. It included London, Cologne, Paris, Cordova, Carthage, Alexandria, Damascus, Smyrna, and the town which we call Constanti nople but which was then named Byzantium. Chester and Lincoln were the two most northerly points held by Roman troops, whose comrades were stationed in Egyptian' towns half as old as time. The Emperor Augustus had in stituted a vast system of political reform to which his successors had generally adhered. Augustus made a united Italy, and stimulated a patriotism for Italy which could not be dissociated from devotion to himself. His name and victories were so continually in the festivals and in the worship of the people, that the measures were com prehended in the man. He bound the middle classes to himself by offering them prefectures and governorships he encouraged guilds which might further the interests of the populace, and while he controlled the power of the aristocratic senate, he consoled its pride with outward splendours. The provinces were prosperous, and though the three immediate successors of Augustus and of his adopted. Son Tiberius were men of inferior calibre, the empire was tranquil and wealthy. Actual misgovernment was rare, irritation against the government was seldom felt, except by half-civilised peoples in the extreme East and North. Spain and Gaul were being rapidly Romanised, and although Asia Minor was more independent of Rome both in its culture and its government, general contentment reigned.
