Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origin of Thought and Speech When opening my eyes in the morning, and whilst still struggling with an inclination to Sleep, I review the day and what it will have in store for me; but the pictures drawn are confused, and my will takes no part in it. For some time I have been haunted by the impression that the mental faculties Of the generality Of men have not succeeded in throwing Off a species of torpor resem bling that of a person hardly awake the supposition that this torpid condition prevents our minds from attaining that degree of lucidity to which they have a right to aspire, is perhaps a hallucination, yet possibly I may be right in thinking it. How many confused ideas traverse my brain in one day, and how seldom those come of which I follow the thread. We know well that injunction SO Often given by parents to children, and by schoolmasters to their pupils: Try to concentrate your attention. It almost seems as if that which we require Of children is beyond my powers, for I have hardly resolved to disentangle a pro blem Of whatever kind, when, under the form of useless, futile, inept thoughts, Obstacles heap themselves across my path. I conclude from this that a fatal somnolence paralyses my faculties. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Origin of Language A preliminary objection to the supposition of any natural origin of language has been raised by the modern German school of philos phers, whose theory leads them to deny the possi ility of man having ever existed in a state of mutism. Man is only man by Speech, says W. V. Humboldt, but in order to discover speech he must already be man. And Max Muller, who cites the epigram, adopts the opinion it expresses. Philosophers, he says (lectures on the Science of Language, p. Who imagine that the first man though left to himself would gradually have emerged from a state of mutism and have invented words for every new conception that arose in his mind, forget that man could not by his own power have acquired the faculty of speech, which is the dis tinctive character of mankind, unattained and uh attainable by the mute creation The supposed difficulty is altogether a fallacy arising from a confusion between the faculty of speech and the actual knowledge of language. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origin and Philosophy of Language It cannot be denied that as an hypothesis of the origin of language there is a good deal Of truth con tained in Herder's statement Of things. The most important points to be noted are, that it (1) explains how a visual image or percept is transformed into the phonetic word; and that (2) it makes the creation of language first appear as attached primarily to single characteristic marks. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The World Process: Or the Origin and Evolution of Life, Mind, Thought and Language Out of the One Element of Existence There is a perceptible, phaenomenal outwardness and an im perceptible characteristic. Inwardness, a well - known temporality and an almost unknown continuity to all natural causation. The connection Of this outwardness and inwardness is not as well known as it has been known in former ages and as it may again be known, if thoroughly studied. Only by making this connection clearly known can the working of natural causation as it is in itself become known. Modern learning does not consider the natural connection be tween inwardness and outwardness Of causation; and it fails to distinguish the integral continuity and the differential temporality in causation. Nature is a continuous process. Life of all sorts comes only in temporary forms, and it goes out of them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of the Chinese Language: As Exemplifying the Origin and Growth of Human Speech China is separated by the ocean, by deserts, and by mountain chains from all nations possessed of original literatures, and her language is more isolated than any other form of human speech studied by philologists. While Chinese has been brought to a high degree of excellence by a people devoted to literary pursuits, it remains possessed of a primitive order of words, and a monosyllabic structure. These peculiarities give it a claim to be a direct descendant of the mother tongue of humanity, but it is not itself that mother tongue. Nor, so far as can be seen, is any other language having a wide area, whether near or far away, a descendant of the Chinese. Further, it may be said that there is no other language, or family of language, which can be more reasonably assumed to be the speech first used in the world's grey morning than can the Chinese. None has proceeded on its course more naturally and gradually, or suffered less by violent inversions in the arrangement of roots. Hence, Chinese is regarded in this essay as the equivalent of the primeval language, and is treated as forming with that language, as seen through a long perspective, a consolidated unity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origin and Progress of Language, Vol. 1 There is no separate work on this subject, in our language, constructed so as to aim sys tematically at the elucidation of this great and interesting truth. The learned are familiar with many treatises on language, some of which are unfavourable to the views here maintained; while the conclusions of others, so far as they are carried out, point only incidentally to the same result as this essay. An attempt has here been made to treat the subject on Christian principles, to compress all that is essential to its right un derstanding into a narrow space; and so to simplify the facts and reasonings as to render them intelligible to the young, and to those classes of society who have no learned leisure to employ in extensive reading on such a theme. If the book shall be found to render instruction and pleasure to inquiring minds, and tend in any case to produce or strengthen belief in the Obligations of the world to the sacred Scriptures, the author will be thankful, and endeavour to present the glory resulting from such events at the feet of Him to whom all praise belongs. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Origin of Language and Myths, Vol. 1 Some fourteen years ago I published a work entitled Myths traced to their Primary Source through Language; and though I was then, as it were, only feeling my way, I was not the less convinced that the discovery to which I laid claim was real; and, however strange it may now appear, I cannot help still entertaining the same Opinion. In that work I showed, as well as I could, how man must have first acquired the use of speech; and by the knowledge thence derived I was enabled to account for the ancient belief in the Divine origin of language, to trace letters to their birth, to discover the primary forms and meanings - hitherto unknown - of many words; and finally, to prove that the fables of the heathen mythology, as well as those of religion and ancient history, were first suggested by the several meanings that a name had at different times obtained. And I may here, perhaps, without stating too much in advance, give the reader some idea of this latter proof of the truth of my discovery. At the time the sun became a great object of worship over all the world, if one of the countless appellations by which it was then known hap pened also to designate some celebrated character of the past, the latter was at once revered as a divinity, even as the sun itself. And if his name, besides signifying the sun. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A great student of the Science of Mind, Richard Ingalese frequently lectured on New Thought and topics of mental therapeutics. The History and Power of Mind is a collection of many of his lectures and articles, first published in 1902, with Ingalese's own annotations and expansions. Difficult subjects to wrangle, from self-control to hypnotism to self-healing, were not a problem for the articulate and charismatic Ingalese, who brings insight and intelligence to esoteric ideas and puts them in a practical and applicable context that demystifies mental and psychic phenomena for the intellectual reader curious about the mind, how it works, and what it can do. American lawyer RICHARD INGALESE (b. 1854) was a self-taught alchemist and proponent of New Thought. He claimed to have confected the true Philosopher's Stone, which confers immortality and turns common metals into gold, and disappeared, along with his wife, a psychic and healer, sometime in the early 20th century. Before their disappearance, Ingalese authored several articles and books, including Fragments of Truth (1921), Astrology and Health (1927), and Cosmogony and Evolution (1907).
