Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pennsylvania Place Names Why is it worth while to study place names.2 Perhaps a sufficient answer is found in the fact that the subject is one of unusual geographical, historical, ethnological, and linguistic interest. It is a cause for regret that men and women who are otherwise well-informed should be so generally ignorant of the history and the meaning of the names that they use every day. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Place Names of Lancashire: Their Origin and History This book has taken nearly four years to bring to its present form. During this period I have been prevented by the somewhat exacting duties of teaching a large body of stu dents, as well as by the claims of other literary work, from working continuously at the various problems connected with a study of place names, excepting during vacations. But for these causes this work might have been ready for the press perhaps two years ago. On the other hand so large a subject as the Place Names of Lancashire might easily occupy the constant attention of a student for twenty years, so numerous, varied, and difficult are the problems which such an inquiry raises. Book Synopsis The Changing of Historic Place Names by : George P. Donehoo

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Changing of Historic Place Names: With an Introduction and Glossary of Some Historic Names Changed or Misspelled in Pennsylvania The author wishes to state that this brief monograph is written at the suggestion of Col. Henry W. Shoemaker, who has not only assisted in the writing, but who also has kindly paid the expense of publication. iMie article could be extended very greatly. The author thinks, however, that enough is written to call attention to the evil of changing place names. Introduction It is indeed a privilege, through the agency of tlie Pennsylvania Alpine Club, to assist in the publication of so timely a monograph as that of Dr. Donehoo s, on the subject of changing historic place names. Every month the senseless shifting is going on, newcomers wresting from the historic past the heritage of honored names. It will be difficult a century hence to follow the course of history in Pennsylvania; even now it is hard to identify the places visited by early travelers like Spangenberg, Ettwein and Col. Weiser, as innovators have changed and re-changed even the names of the streams and mountains that they crossed. It will be hard to trace the racial and philological development of the State as the haphazard system of renaming places destroys all historic sequence of nationality and individual tendencies. One bright spot remains. Pennsylvania has discarded fewer of her Indian names than most other States; personal vanity or prejudice was hardly strong enough to obliterate these for even more than "their names are on the waters and you cannot blot them out," the Indian-named mountains, valleys, lakes, rivers and streams persist and bid fair to defy the ruthlessness of the ages. Let the constant watchfulness of every public-spirited Pennsylvanian be directed to "save the ancient landmarks" and keep inviolate the sturdy, distinctive nomenclature and spelling handed down by our forefathers. Download or read book American Names written by Henry Gannett and published by [Washington] Public Affairs Press [1947]. This book was released on 1947 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gannett was an American geographer who is described as the "father of mapmaking in America." He was the chief geographer for the United States Geological Survey essentially from its founding until 1902. He served as geographer of the U.S. censuses of 1880, 1890, and 1900, as well as the Philippine, Cuban, and Puerto Rican censuses. During this time, he became interested in place names. He was motivated to publish this alphabetical compilation of the origins of approximately 10,000 place names because it embodies so much local and general history. Gannett's efforts to resolve difficulties caused by proliferation, duplication, and confusion of place names led to the establishment of the U.S. Board of Geographic Names in 1890. He served as the board's chairman until 1910. He was also a founding member and president of the National Geographic Society.

It will be noted that the mute a is here used to sug gest the sound of the mute o; conversely, O' (short for of) may turn up, in these pages, as a symbol for the same sound. I have even, to the hor ror Of some conscientious souls, refused to quibble over the great gaps that are alleged to exist between Mary, merry, and marry, or between hairy and Harry. For my purposes, if, you wish to rhyme Cairo, (illinois) with arrow, you'll be close enough to the actual pronunciation to get by. This is no book for purists. Book Synopsis The Place-Names of Durham (Classic Reprint) by : Charles E. Jackson
Download or read book The Place-Names of Durham (Classic Reprint) written by Charles E. Jackson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Place-Names of Durham The investigation of the place-names of Durham is made greatly more difficult by the fact that there was no Domesday Survey of the county, and therefore that valuable source of the early forms of A.S. names is not available. Further, as the status of the county was a kind of imperium in imperio - there is a document extant wherein the king of the land begs permission of the bishop of the diocese to raise recruits therein! - and one in which documents were not carefully kept, there is not so full a supply of information from this source as is the case in some other counties. I went through one standard work of several hundreds of A. S. charters and found, I think, only one relating to Durham. The place-names of the county are nearly all of native origin. Of some the secret is hidden with the greatest of undesigned diligence, but in most cases they yield what is required when the principles of the development of the dialect are applied. The Psalmist would find no reason to abate his complaint that the people "call the lands after their own names." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Origin of Washington Geographic Names Four years later a climax was reached in the geographical history, when, in 1792, Captain Robert Gray, under the American flag, discovered and named the Columbia River and Grays Harbor, and Captain George Vancouver, under the British flag, discovered and named Puget Sound and many of the surrounding geographical features. Both these explorers respected the names given by the Spaniards so far as they were known, and the names given by Captains Cook and Meares. Since that culminating year of ex ploration, the geographic names have increased rapidly. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Origin of the Names of the States of the Union I Have the honor to lay before the Society a series of notes, the result of a limited research, upon the origin of the names of the States of the Union. I was led to suppose the subject might prove interesting from the circumstance that, some time ago, it had attracted the attention of the Society as a fit subject of investigation, but for some reason no definite inquiry has been prosecuted. I regret that in respect to the origin of the names of several States, my paper will simply present an array of conflicting authorities. I have to acknowledge my indebtedness to the acting librarian of the Society, and to Mr. Green, the accomplished librarian of the Free Public Library of Worcester, for the means to prosecute these inquiries. In considering the subject, it will be convenient to divide the States into groups, starting with the original thirteen States, as the first group, and in respect to this group, to refer to the States in the order of the coast line from North to South. The origin of the name of New Hampshire is very simple. The original territory conveyed by patent of the Plymouth Company to John Mason in 1629, was named by him after Hampshire County in England.
