A gun was discharged very close to them. An inﬂammatory re-action followed, involving the corneae and irides, leaving in its train posterior synechia and changes in the shape and appearance of the corneae. It does not appear from the history that the immediate inﬂammatory reaction involved the posterior portions of the globes, for the patient retained useful vision for twenty years, though repeated exacerbations followed, and his vision gradually decreased until he became totally blind in the left eye, and the vision in the right eye was reduced to Shadows. Portions of the left cornea are opaque Over the pupil and inferiorly, but the major part is transparent. The pupil is contracted and iris bound down by posterior synechia. Fundus could not be seen. Right eye (shown in illustration) same as left, but cornea entirely transparent. Ophthalmoscopy shows extensive choroidal atrophy, no field being clear, with atrophy of the Optic nerve. As may be imagined, the patient presented a ghastly appearance. The corneae drooped out of the lids like two pouches distended with water, and were fastened above to the sclerae, and supported beneath by the lower lids. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ophthalmic Record, 1904, Vol. 13: A Monthly Review of the Progress of Ophthalmology From the remote ages of antiquity alterations in the curvature of the cornea have, no doubt, attracted the attention of careful oh servers ih medicine, but the classification and consequent systematic study of these variations have until comparatively recent years been greatly neglected, thus accounting for the inability to 'properly treat this condition. It is not unlikelv, that many of these abnormalities in curvature escaped detection in cases in which the cornea remained perfectly transparent. Conical cornea, as we understand it at the present does not seem to have been known to the ancients, as no satisfactory account of it is to be found in the writings of the Greeks, in Roman litera ture, or in the books of the Arabians. It is possible, however, that Ali Ben Isa in his systematic work on Anatomy, Physiology and Dis eases of the Eve described it. Ambroise Pare1 alludes to the incurability of corneal staphyloma, but whether he included conical cornea within this term is a matter of considerable conjecture. Per haps the earlier systematic study of the condition is to be found in the dissertation on Staphyloma Diaphanum published by Mau chart at. Tubingen in 1748.
